That meant that the training of the officer cadets at the Theresan Military Academy was rearranged and divided into scientific training leading to a bachelor degree and an officer training course. Since 2010 further military education leading to a master´s degree has been instituted at the National Defence Academy in Vienna. Military sciences are not recognized in Austria as a scientific discipline and therefore there are no possibilities to study these sciences in Austria. It seems to be necessary to develop a PhD programme within the Austrian Armed Forces in the long run. In 2008 the National Defence Academy started a co-operation with the Hungarian Zrinyi Miklos National Defence University to offer Austrian officers the possibility to take part in a PhD programme on military sciences. The Austrian students had to participate in certain seminars in Vienna and Budapest, but they were allowed to fulfil the teaching obligations in scientific programmes or universities in Austria. Additionally they had to publish the results of their research in Austrian or other journals, proceedings, or books. When the PhD programme was first presented in Vienna in the beginning of 2008, the author decided to take part in that programme and applied for it. After the accession three years of intensive studies and research followed and this thesis is now presented to the scientific community. Now it is time to say thank you to several persons who supported the author: First of all, I want to thank the head of the Language Institute of the Austrian Armed Forces, BG Mag. Horst Walther. He supported the idea from the very beginning because he was convinced of the importance of training officers of the Austrian Armed Forces in military sciences on a PhD level – if Austria wanted to be able to deal with this branch of science, it had to have officers holding PhD degrees as well. I want to address a special thank you to my first supervisor, Hon. A.o. Prof. Dr. habil. Dr. Andrea RIEMER PhD, who very early gave me a first advice on how to fix the research design. Her useful feedback on my draft version of the thesis helped to produce an austere text, which came to the point according to her expectations. Secondly I want to thank my second supervisor Col. Dr. András UJJ very much for chairing the pre defence and his helpful advises afterwards. Finally, I want to thank my wife Claudia and my children Ines and Fabio for their understanding during the final phase of writing. Cette dernière s'étend sur douze années (mars 1933-avril 1945) au cours desquelles l'ordre démocratique est démantelé et baillonné. Cet état de choses n'arrive pas du jour au lendemain; il est l'aboutissement de conflits qui opposent, sous la Première République, le camp conservateur au camp social- démocrate. Le résultat de ces conflits, c'est l'élimination par étapes de la démocratie par le parti chrétien-social et ses alliés fascistes, en particulier les "Heimwehren". Celle-ci s'effectue principalement par le fait qu'en 1933 le Parlement est mis hors d'état d'agir et qu'en 1934 tous les partis politiques sont interdits. On peut au contraire définir les deux grandes périodes démocratiques mentionnées auparavant comme jeu de rapports de force entre les partis politiques, jeu qui se déroule essentiellement dans le cadre des institutions parlementaires.

    Fotos und Dokumente im Österreichischen Staatsarchiv Katalog zur Ausstellung Österreichisches Staatsarchiv - Generaldirektion Text: Robert Stach Layout & Grafi k: Sabine Gfrorner Wien 2010 Zum Geleit Wenige Politiker im Laufe der Geschichte haben das Bild Österreichs im In- und Ausland so geprägt wie Bruno Kreisky (1911-1990). Seine Karriere führte diesen Mann, in verschiedensten Positionen seinem Land dienend, fast bis in das höchste Amt des Staates, eine Funktion für die zu kandidieren er jedoch ablehnte. Verfolgt von der Politik der Dreißigerjahre, als Sozialist, als Jude, kehrte er aus dem schwedi- schen Exil ohne Ressentiments zurück und half von Anfang an die Verwaltung der Zweiten Republik aufzubauen. Schon dabei nützte er die im Ausland geknüpften Kontakte für seine Arbeit und diese Verbindungen trugen in der Folge nicht nur zur Hebung seines Ansehens bei, sondern auch Österreich partizipierte davon. Wie einer seiner Biographen mit Recht meinte, strahlte Bruno Kreisky Charisma und Spontane- ität aus, war abwägend und impulsiv. Wer jemals diesem Mann persönlich begegnete und es leben heute noch viele Menschen, denen er persönlich gegenübertrat, mit ihnen diskutierte oder sie auch nur ansprach, der wird noch heute von dieser Persönlichkeit beeindruckt sein. Natürlich war auch er geprägt von Herkunft, Erziehung und allen Eigenschaften, die einen Menschen im Laufe seines Lebens prägen, aber doch war er für Generationen „der Kreisky“, der an den Staatsvertragsverhandlungen ebenso formend mitwirkte, wie dann als Außenminister in der Südtirolfrage um letzten Endes 13 Jahre als Bundeskanzler zu wirken. Das Österreichische Staatsarchiv nimmt den 100. Geburtstag dieses Staatsmannes zum Anlass in einer umfassenden Foto- und Aktenausstellung nicht nur nostalgische Erinnerungen zu wecken, sondern vor allem der heutigen Jugend mit dem von Kreisky überlieferten Bonmot „Lernen Sie Geschichte...“ mehr als ein Zeitalter nahezubringen.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832), dt. Dichter Ein Danke im Nachhinein möchte ich meinem Vater sagen, der leider zu früh verstorben ist, um dabei sein zu können. Ich bin sicher, dass er diese Arbeit anderswo anderen vorlesen wird. Er war es, der in mir, seit meiner Kindheit, das Interesse für Geschichte geweckt und oft mit mir über alles – vor allem über Zeitgeschichte – diskutiert hat. Mein Vater hatte ein profundes geschichtliches Wissen, ohne es gelernt oder beruflich genutzt zu haben. Ein Teil meiner Arbeit könnte auch die seine sein. Meiner Mutter gebührt besonderer Dank, weil sie es war und ist, die mich immer wieder unterstützt hat, weil sie an mich glaubte (…und das war gar nicht immer so leicht). Ihr habe ich viel zu verdanken, immerhin kennt sie mich ja schon beinahe 49 Jahre. Ein ganz großes Dankeschön gilt meiner Partnerin Beatrice, die ich in fremden Landen kennenlernen durfte, und wir entdeckten dort, dass wir uns sehr nahe sind. Sie hat viel Geduld bewiesen und auch entscheidend dazu beigetragen, dass die vorliegende Dissertation auch „zum Anschauen ist“. Vielen Dank auch an Dr. Oliver Rathkolb, dessen Wissen und dessen Denken in Zusammenhängen mich sehr faszinieren. The new members Austria, as well as Sweden and Finland, were all deeply rooted democracies and had highly developed economies. Sozialstrukturelle und kollektivbiografische Untersuchungen“ (Zukunftsfondsprojekt Nr. P12-1307). Eine wichtige Quelle für die namentliche Erfassung der Februaropfer waren die vielen vorhandenen Denkmäler, Gedenktafeln, Mahnmale, Grabstätten und sonstige Erinnerungs- zeichen. Sie wurden im Zuge der Arbeit an diesem Projekt systematisch erfasst und namentlich ausgewertet. Trotzdem will und kann die nachfolgende Auflistung nicht Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit erheben.
