or the second year, St. Raymond students have the opportunity to brush up on their Fchess skills, while practicing with the masters! Joining forces with Chess NYC, students are now able to work directly with a chess master after school. Working one-on-one with the Chess Pro and with their peers, students have adapted a special curriculum that is uniquely designed for St. Raymond students. This program encourages the young men to work intricately on their game, perfect the art of passing pawns, and to strive for excellence even beyond the chess board.

Twenty-two members strong, the Chess team will compete in several chess matches in the tri-state area this year, allowing them to explore a new venue of extra-curricular success.

6 From Classroom to Newsroom Our students have the edge St. Raymond students now have the hands-on opportunity to create, produce, and capture video like a professional behind the scenes of network television. St. Raymond Media Specialist, Mrs. Claudia Amaya, esteemed members of the Advancement Club, and Advancement Directors, Ms. Christina DeCrescenzo and Mr. Stewart Brathwaite, have all come together to create RAVEtube, the school’s newest and most updated video channel. RAVEtube will be the host of dynamic student-driven videos that will capture and showcase all that is St. Raymond.

A video production club has also been formed to allow students to broaden their existing media skills by effectively creating and recording documentaries and short films. Creating personal videos that can be presented to colleges and universities during the application process and for internship opportunities, students will be able to offer script writing, production, public relations, and marketing skills. These young men will also compete for a spot on the Archdiocese television station and are working to create the school’s first film festival that will take place in May.

The Science Department will integrate this new lab into its AP Physics course, which will better prepare students for college.

The school offers eight AP courses. They are Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, English, Italian, Physics, Spanish, and United States History. Graduates that go on to college who have worked through the rigors of an AP course were better prepared for college-level work, were reviewed by college admissions offices at a higher regard, and were sometimes able to pinpoint a career focus sooner than students who have not taken these courses. By turning a standard classroom into a Physics Lab, we are able to elevate our academic program and expose our students to a more challenging work load.
