Spread the word: Ravens in the Community 20 Pass this on to a friend or other alumni interested in learning more about St. Raymond High School for Boys. from theParish Pastor

Dear Alumni and Friends of St. Raymond,

We hope that your summer months were restful and relaxing and that you are enjoying some of the magic of the fall sea- son. It is good to be cool here in New York!

We have only positive news to report as we continue to celebrate the Golden Anniversary of our school. The freshman class is the largest in several years, with 219 new students and our total enrollment is a very respectable 728. That says so much about the reputation of our school and the confidence of our parents—St. Raymond High School for Boys is not just surviving—it is thriving! Our plans for the new annex building are no longer merely on paper but, if you pass by Purdy Street, you will see machinery, equipment, sewer drains and most importantly, a foundation being dug. There is no turning back now and we are happy to see so much progress. Once again, this new construction illustrates to our parents and the community that we are here to stay for another 50 years!

Your support and your generosity will be key ingredients to the success of our campaign. Over the next few months, we will be turning to you, our faithful alums and friends, to assist us with your own personal gift to the project. The parish is committed to the project with about 50% of the funding for the 50th Anniversary Campaign. With that, we are turning to our Ravens for the other 50%. We know that we can count on you for a gift, no matter how large or small.

Please know that you are welcome to visit, to see the construction and to view the beautiful model that has been assem- bled for closer detail. You will be pleased to see a music room, a computer room, a senior guidance complex, several new classrooms as part of the annex, as well as a rooftop sports area (or as we prefer to call it, a promenade!) Please remember us in your prayers. St. John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us. Live Jesus in our hearts, forever.

Sincerely,

Monsignor John Graham Pastor fromthePrincipal

Dear Alumni and Friends of St. Raymond,

Welcome to the annual fall edition of The RAVEN. The school community is excited to welcome 219 freshmen and their parents into the Class of 2014. This class comprises students from , and Westchester County from 87 elementary schools. So, the future of our school is bright indeed.

The school is celebrating a “Year of Kindness” as our special theme. The students are working on various ways to incorporate their community service projects into this theme. They have had two excellent assembly programs on respect and kindness.

We are also excited with many academic achievements and developments. The Music Department has expanded with additional elective courses, including a school chorus. Our seniors from last year once again won the NYC Stock Market Game over all high schools, public and private, in . The school added forensics to its as an elective for seniors. We are also on track this year for 100% of our senior class to obtain NYS Regents and/or Advanced Regents diplomas.

The fall season has produced some notable sporting accomplishments as well. Both our JV and Varsity teams won their respective fall tournaments. Our cross country team produced ten medal winners. Our soccer team won their division and is eager to move forward into the playoffs and the bowling team is currently offering strong competition. Additionally, our intramural foot- ball and ping pong programs are up and running.

All of this excellent programming will find a fine new home in the building addition that is scheduled to open in September 2011. The additional space and technology will continue to make St. Raymond High School for Boys one of the leading Catholic, Lasallian schools in the Archdiocese of New York.

Thank you for the support that you have given both in presence and donations. We are always grateful for your sacrifices on our behalf and ask that you continue to remember our school community.

God bless,

Brother Daniel Gardner, FSC Principal

Lasallian Educators of the Year by Mr. Rick Duncan ‘68, Lasallian Coordinator

One of the more difficult decisions made each year at St. Raymond High School for Boys is the one that determines the distinguished Lasallian Educa- tor of the Year. This year proved no different, and in some ways more difficult. At our school there are so many qualified and deserving educators who ex- emplify the requirements necessary to receive this most prestigious award.

In order to receive this award, an educator must be a minister at St. Raymond for at least five years, the recipient must work in association with the school community to foster gospel values in the lives of students and staff and the recipient must see the Lasallian School as a place of educational excellence, which shares in the teaching mission of the . This award is the Br. Richard Galvin, FSC Mr. Robert Heckmann most notable award that the school can bestow upon a faculty member. This award is presented by the Regional Board of of the Christian Brothers in the name of all Lasallians.

This year, and after some discussion, the award is presented to two most deserving recipients, Br. Richard Galvin, FSC ‘82 and Mr. Robert Heckmann. Both of these individuals reflect the criteria as outlined above and are truly respected by both students and their peers alike. They have dedicated themselves to the mission of St. Raymond in a most unselfish manner over their many years at St. Raymond. They are educators who have “touched the hearts of their students” and have been role models for their colleagues by their dedication and exemplary behavior and attitude.

Br. Richard and Mr. Heckmann are known throughout the school community as tireless volunteers at all our school’s events. They are accessible and accommodating to their students both in and out of the classroom. They are individuals who are worthy of receiving this most prestigious award. The faculty, staff, administration and students thank them for all that they have done for our school community. Current faculty members who have received the Lasallian Educator of the Year Award are Mr. Michael McCauley (1989), Mr. Ron Pat- nosh (1994), Mrs. Phyllis Sobieralski (1998), Mrs. Evelyn Cabuhat (2000), Ms. Edita Chico (2001), Mrs. Judith Carew (2002), Mr. James Winkle ‘82 (2005), Mr. Rick Duncan ‘68 (2006), Mr. Chris Corvi ‘90 (2007), Mrs. Adoracion Macalintal (2008) and Mr. Ed Mouzon ’82 (2009).

The Magazine for St. Raymond High School for Boys 3 CONSTRUCTION IS UNDERWAY on extension

Everyone at St. Raymond High School for Boys is excited that the construction for the new school extension is now underway.

Construction began on August 9 and as you can see from the pictures below, much has been done in just a little bit of time. This is the largest project St. Raymond High School has taken on since opening 50 years ago. It will literally and figuratively change the face of the school and greatly impact every student.

As other schools are closing, St. Raymond High School is expand- ing and preserving Catholic education for underprivileged stu- dents in the Bronx. The 14,000 square foot addition will include new programs in art and music, technology will be increased and seniors will have dedicated resources to support them in their move to college and their careers. In the existing building, two state of the art science labs will be created and upgrades will be made throughout the facility, including the new William F. Reilly Memorial Weight Room.

Feel free to stop by the school to see how the construction is shaping up. The expected completion date for the project is Sep- tember 2011, just in time for the next school year.

September 1, 2010 September 17, 2010 October 4, 2010 own a piece of the SCHOOL’S HISTORY As we begin to build a state of the art new building extension to our school during our 50th Anni- versary, you can own a part of the school’s history. We will be selling 100 bricks from the old parking garage, each with a plaque to commemorate the occasion. Each brick will cost $25 (plus shipping if you cannot pick up from the school).

To order your piece of St. Raymond history, please contact Mrs. Valerie Noble in the Advancement Office at 718-824-5050 ext. 107 or [email protected].

National elects new officers

Being elected into the National Honor Society (NHS) is one of the highest honors bestowed on St. Raymond students each year. Qualities such as char- acter, scholarship, leadership, service, honesty, reliability and citizenship are required—as well as maintaining an academic average of 85 percent or bet- ter—in order to be considered a candidate for the National Honor Society.

Officers for the 2010-2011 school year were recently elected by their peers. An important responsibility for chapter officers is ensuring that all NHS mem- bers maintain their membership obligations and live up to the standards of the chapter by being positive role models at school and in the community. Live Jesus in our hearts...forever! fromthe Director of Advancement

Dear Alumni and Friends of St. Raymond High School,

I will begin with a very big note of THANKS to all of you that made the past school year a remarkable one for our school. As you will see, the Raven Fund has increased for the fifth straight year to the highest figure in the school’s history. Our De LaSalle Dinner in April also made history with the highest number of attendees since its inception, and this year’s Alumni Association Golf Outing raised three times as much as it did in 2009.

These outstanding figures indicate that we have a great base of alumni who are enthu- siastic about supporting current and future generations of Ravens. Your support is truly evident here in the school, and the students are grateful for your generosity. I have seen the joy in students’ eyes when they have learned that they were awarded a scholarship from the Alumni Association. I have witnessed their excitement to utilize new facilities such as the William F. Reilly Memorial Fitness Center. And viewing their reactions to the construction that has begun on the new building extension, I can see how proud they are to be St. Raymond students, and how excited they are for the future.

As we continue with our 50th Anniversary and embark on the school’s most significant construction project this school we have ever gone through, your support will be that much more appreciated and necessary. Our office is committed to helping advance the mission of our school to all students that go here, and it is through your kindness and generosity that this is possible.

Now is as good a time as any to reconnect with your alma mater. Whether you would like to help plan a class reunion, find out if your favorite teacher is still here, take a look around the building and catch a glimpse at the construction, or just update us on where you live and work, don’t be a stranger. We want to make sure that all St. Raymond alumni can take part in the excitement of our 50th Anniversary. To that extent, we are happy to welcome Genna Toye to our office as a full time Advancement Associate. By expanding our office, we will be able to plan more events, reach more alumni and con- tinue to grow as we approach the school’s 51st year and beyond. On behalf of Genna, Valerie and I, we thank you for your continued support, and we hope to see you soon.

Best Wishes,

Christopher Ellis, Director of Advancement

2009 - 2010 Annual Report 15 Br. Andrew O’Gara, F.S.C. Legacy Society “I’m confident that with your support this fine school will continue to thrive.” —Br. Andrew O’Gara, FSC

In 2006 St. Raymond High School for Boys created, in honor of a true leader and man of significance in St. Raymond High School for Boys’ history, an endowment scholar- ship fund in honor of Brother Andrew O’Gara, FSC.

Commitment and strength are words synonymous with Brother Andrew. Upon his name and legacy the school is building and further ensuring its ability to serve the young men who pass through the halls. Brother Andrew died in November, 2008 at the age of 80—but his legacy lives on.

St. Raymond is committed to strengthening the school by accepting the strongest students without regard for their ability to pay the full tuition, ensuring that a St. Ray- mond education remains affordable, enriching the school community by reaching out to the diverse population of New York City.

You can become a member of this society through direct cash gifts, or you can make a Planned Gift to St. Raymond High School for Boys.

“Clearly Brother Andrew is the rock upon which St. Raymond is built and he will always be the spirit behind its future success...let’s say a prayer for him and sing ‘in our hearts’ the school song one more time for Brother Andrew.” (Angelo DiPierro ‘77)

To learn more about becoming a member of Brother Andrew’s Legacy Society, please contact the Advancement Office at 718.824-5050 x105.

18 14th annual Golf Outing Organized by the St. Raymond Alumni Association Every year, the St. Raymond Alumni Association Golf Outing is the school’s greatest fundraiser, contributing to scholarships for current Ravens in need. Last year, 23 deserv- ing students earned $12,000 in scholarships to continue their education at St. Raymond High School.

This year’s outing was held at Salem Golf Club in North Salem, NY on Tuesday, Oc- tober 12. Despite the rainy weather in the morning hours, the day was filled with sunshine and a fair breeze. Golfers and sponsors were greeted with goodie bags containing a Ravens Dri-Fit tee shirt, The Rock golf hat, golf tees, Nike golf balls and coupons to Golfsmith. After check in and brunch, the shotgun start was at noon. Eighteen holes later, the participants were welcomed to the buffet dinner with an opening prayer from Msgr. Graham and re- marks from Brother Daniel. Alumni Associa- tion president and event emcee Jim Martin ’68 then distributed awards for longest drive, closest to the pin and first place team and conducted the raffle and auction draw- ings.

The Fred Ill ’69 trophy was also given to Sal Travaglino ‘93 for lowest net score of the day. The total amount raised from this year’s outing exceeds $27,000. Many deserving students will obtain scholarships in honor of Dr. Nicholas Daniello ’66. Dr. Nick was a founding member of the St. Raymond High School for Boys Alumni Association. His son Christopher joined us at the outing to golf and his wife Kathleen arrived later in the evening to join us for dinner. If you are interested in joining us for the 2011 outing or would like to be part of the planning committee for the event, please contact Christopher Ellis at 718-824-5050 ext. 105 or [email protected].
