STUDENT SPEAKER

JOSHUA WATKINS, ofKuna, ID, is graduating with honors, earning dual degrees in Political Science and Communication, with a minor in English.

Graduating in four years with a 3.906 GPA, Watkins is recognized by his faculty as an extraordinary scholar. He is a member of the Lambda Pi Eta National Honor Society for Communication Studies and is highly regarded for his research, which he's presented at national conferences.

As a member of Boise State's Talkin' Broncos national champion speech and debate team, Watkins has an impressive list of awards in multiple formats of debate and in every genre of individual speaking. He is the only two-time winner of the Northwest Forensic Conference's prestigious "Coaches' Commemorative Award." He was the first forensic competitor to win both the Singletary Outstanding Debator trophy and the R.D. Mahaffey Outstanding Speaker award at Linfield College's Mahaffey Invitational Tournament.

Watkins has been honored for his dedication to community service, earning the Boise State Frank Church Institute Public Service Award. He has volunteered his time with the American Heart Association, the Idaho Food Bank and American Cancer Society and was a news intern with Boise State Public Radio. He has served as a judge and mentor to local high school speech and debate teams and currently is acting as the assistant coach for novice and advanced speech and debate teams for three local high schools.

"His willingness to take an active role in making our campus and the larger community better places has naturally led to a number of leadership roles for Josh," said Rick Moore, an associate professor and department chair in communication and one of three faculty members to nominate Watkins as the student speaker for commencement.

Following graduation, Watkins will pursue a masters program in politics and communication at the School of Economics in England, with future plans to obtain a Ph.D. in mass communication. His dream is to be a professor of media studies, perhaps back here at Boise State.

"It is precisely because of my experience at Boise State University that I have been honored with such an opportunity to continue my education," said Watkins. "For four years, my time at Boise State has been filled with professors that have invested their time in me, organizations that have helped me develop as an academic and activities that shaped who I am today." ALYSSA BABCOCK, originally from Palmer, Alaska, is an athletic training major. For the past two years she has been a committed student in the Athletic Training Program, which requires rigorous hours spent in both the clinical and academic setting learning about the prevention, immediate care, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. She currently is president of the Student Athletic Trainers' Association. Along with two of her peers, she recently presented a winning case study called "An Unexpected ACLR: From the Athletic Training Students' Perspective," at the Annual Northwest Athletic Trainers' Association's District 10 meeting held in Boise. In summer 2012, she volunteered at a gymnastics club in Alaska and used her knowledge to provide better strengthening and prevention techniques to the competitive gymnasts. In addition to the demanding schedule of an athletic training student, she has volunteered at a local church in Boise as a seventh-grade girls' youth group leader since August 2011. She plans to attend graduate school this fall to continue her education by earning a master's degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise science, alongside an athletic training internship in a clinical outreach setting in Alaska. Babcock'shonored facultymember is john McChesney, associate professorof kinesiology.
