All cultures, dating back to pre-historic times, celebrated rituals of the winter solstice with wonder and magic. Throughout the centuries they used circular and spiral decorations, candles, bonfires, seasonal food and rejoicing. Stonehenge is thought to be a temple to the two solstices. This phenomenon occurs each year when the sun reaches its southern most position in the winter sky and then begins a return northward --bringing longer days and precious light. The actual solstice is barely a moment in time, but it appears to earthlings that the sun stands stunningly still.
