  • A Short History of the Wearing of Clerical Collars in the Presbyterian Tradition
A Short History of the Wearing of Clerical Collars in the Presbyterian Tradition Introduction There does not seem to have been any distinctive everyday dress for Christian pastors up until the 6th century or so. Clergy simply wore what was common, yet muted, modest, and tasteful, in keeping with their office. In time, however, the dress of pastors remained rather conservative, as it is want to do, while the dress of lay people changed more rapidly. The result was that the dress of Christian pastors became distinct from the laity and thus that clothing began to be invested (no pun intended) with meaning. Skipping ahead, due to the increasing acceptance of lay scholars in the new universities, the Fourth Lateran council (1215) mandated a distinctive dress for clergy so that they could be distinguished when about town. This attire became known as the vestis talaris or the cassock. Lay academics would wear an open front robe with a lirripium or hood. It is interesting to note that both modern day academic and clerical garb stems from the same Medieval origin. Councils of the Roman Catholic church after the time of the Reformation stipulated that the common everyday attire for priests should be the cassock. Up until the middle of the 20th century, this was the common street clothes attire for Roman Catholic priests. The origin of the clerical collar does not stem from the attire of Roman priests. It’s genesis is of protestant origin. The Origin of Reformed Clerical Dress In the time of the Reformation, many of the Reformed wanted to distance themselves from what was perceived as Roman clerical attire.

VOLUME 21 NUMBER 4 PLAINVILLE’S HOMETOWN CONNECTION DECEMBER/JANUARY 2018 The Mary Rose Faith DiMinno “Merry Christmas to All from Memorial Sundial The Brunell Family” Since ancient times people have been awed by the movement of the sun and acknowledged it as the source of light and life. All cultures, dating back to pre-historic times, celebrated rituals of the winter solstice with wonder and magic. Throughout the centuries they used circular and spiral decorations, candles, bonfires, seasonal food and rejoicing. Stonehenge is thought to be a temple to the two solstices. This phenomenon occurs each year when the sun reaches its southern most position in the winter sky and then begins a return northward --bringing longer days and precious light. The actual solstice is barely a moment in time, but it appears to earthlings that the sun stands stunningly still. Some more northern areas of the globe experience longer periods of of 15 Hillscrest Road is busy with the annual decorations darker days. Joshua Brunelle at his family home for the Christmas holiday. • Catwalk Catholicism: on the Ongoing Significance Of
religions Article Catwalk Catholicism: On the Ongoing Significance of Federico Fellini’s Ecclesiastical Fashion Show David Inglis 1,* and Chris Thorpe 2 1 Faculty of Social Sciences, Helsinki University, 00014 Helsinki, Finland 2 Department of Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology, University of Exeter, Exeter EX4 4PY, UK * Correspondence: david.inglis@helsinki.fi Received: 10 July 2019; Accepted: 3 September 2019; Published: 9 September 2019 Abstract: In Fellini-Roma (1972), the film director Federico Fellini includes a sequence about an imaginary ecclesiastical fashion show, a display of ever more outlandish clerical clothing designs. Fellini brought together various elements that, in conventional cultural coding, do not seem to fit together: secular fashion design and catwalks, and Catholic practice and ceremonial. The sequence juxtaposes and intermingles these apparent incompatibles. Surprisingly little scholarly attention has been paid to the nature and significance of this sequence. Yet it is complex, being simultaneously satirical and empathetic, as well as camp and carnivalesque. The paper reaches back in time, reviewing the history of Catholic vestments, to show that the sequence also dramatizes the fact that sartorial fashion and Church garb have overlapped and informed each other historically. The appeal of the sequence for various types of audience has been enhanced in the internet age, and the paper considers how it has become an increasingly ubiquitous reference-point for the fashion industry, bloggers, and cultural critics, especially when the latter want to thematize controversies about male homosexuality in the Church today. Fellini’s presentation of catwalk Catholicism is both a rich object of scholarship, and a multivalent vehicle used by actors for various contemporary purposes.
