PORTICO v2.1 MANUFACTURER’S GUIDE | 35 4. PRODUCT DATA ENTRY Nested Materials Inventory Method lists all materials and then lists substances within each material above the reportable threshold. This method provides material level information in a useful context that aligns with other product inventory, screening, and optimization programs.

Basic Inventory Method provides a single list of substances above the reportable threshold in the product. This method does not provide material level information.

PORTICO v2.1 MANUFACTURER’S GUIDE | 36 4. PRODUCT ENTRY

Before delving into the details of content inventory reporting, familiarize yourself with these terms: ● Materials - In the context of HPD v2.1, a product material is any item that remains distinct in the finished product. Consider this, from the HPD v2.0 Standard guidance document: “The Content Inventory can be structured using two methods ○ Nested Materials Inventory Method: must include every material that is part of the product as delivered. Each material must have its own line item entry, regardless of the extent of further inventory at the substance level. For example, a coating or finish must be itemized as a distinct material, whether present on a supplied part or added by the manufacturer producing the HPD, whereas supplied materials that do not remain distinct in the finished product are not inventoried separately (e.g., solution dyes for fabrics). ○ Basic Inventory Method: must include every substance above the specified threshold that is a part of the product as delivered. Each substance must have its own line item entry

In both Nested Materials and Basic Inventories, packaging materials that are removed from the product prior to use and materials that are attached to or part of the product for identification purposes only (e.g., tags, stamps, other identifiers) are excluded from inventory requirements.”

PORTICO v2.1 MANUFACTURER’S GUIDE | 37 4. PRODUCT DATA ENTRY

● Material Threshold - This is the level of disclosure that you are able to inventory for each material, and are willing to report to. For example, if you know ingredients of your wood coating down to chemicals present at 0.01% of the product, then you would indicate a disclosure threshold of 100ppm. If, instead, you only reliably knew the chemical inventory down to 0.1%, then you would indicate 1000ppm. The more specific the threshold, the higher your score will be. NOTE: This threshold may or may not include residual content (see explanation below). ● Intentional Content - This refers to any substances that are intentionally added to the product by the manufacturer. If you intentionally add third party products, you will still be responsible for reporting their ingredients as well. For example, if a CLT manufacturer uses a third party glue, but does not know it’s full composition, then they will need to contact the supplier to obtain this information. If suppliers are unwilling to give this information, project team members may be willing to provide some assistance in speaking with them. ● Residual Content - Residuals refer to substances that would be present in your product to the indicated thresholds without having intentionally added them. These are things like process chemicals or impurities. In Portico 2.1, you will be prompted to determine whether residuals were considered for each material. In this new version, it is possible to comply with standards without necessarily knowing your full residual product make-up.

PORTICO v2.1 MANUFACTURER’S GUIDE | 38 4. PRODUCT DATA ENTRY

Residuals Considered vs. Not Considered

● Residuals Considered - If you indicate that residuals were considered in your material, then this means that an appropriate analysis has been completed on the material to determine residual substances down to the disclosure threshold selected for the material. For example, consider a wood finish that is a material for your Chair X product and you indicate that you can disclose the wood finish’s ingredients to 100ppm with residuals considered. This means that you will understand and report all chemicals (down to CAS number) that are present both intentionally and unintentionally in the wood finish down to 99.99%. Any chemicals present that make up less than 0.01% of the finish by weight would not need to be reported. ● Residuals Not Considered - For materials not considered for residuals, the process is a bit different. You will still report all intentional substances (down to CAS number) to the indicated disclosure threshold. Your materials will then be automatically associated with residual chemicals as determined by the chemical database, Pharos. ● Effect on Score - Whether you consider or do not consider residuals in your materials, your score will not be affected. The incentive to reporting residuals from your own analysis, though, is so that your product is not associated with residual chemicals that are not necessarily present in your product. If you disagree with the automatically populated residuals from the Pharos project, then you must provide your own information obtained from your own analysis.

PORTICO v2.1 MANUFACTURER’S GUIDE | 39 4. PRODUCT DATA ENTRY - Nested Format

When adding a new material, you will be prompted to answer some information on this page. Remember - Click the information buttons if in doubt about an entry, as they General Information provide very useful information. Also remember that Portico uses the HPD v2.1 reporting Classifications methodology. Therefore, some selections will lead to non-compliance on this page. As a reminder, some project teams requires disclosure to at least 1000ppm, and not be Certifications and Compliance labelled as “Undisclosed” or “Proprietary.” Content Inventory

PORTICO v2.1 MANUFACTURER’S GUIDE | 58 4. PRODUCT DATA ENTRY On this final page, you can review your data completion to be sure you haven’t forgotten any key pieces of information you want to share to the design team. Afterwards, click “Submit Product Data” to upload your product to the Portico product library.

It is important to remember, prior to submitting, no-one besides your company users can see your content inventory. This is for privacy purposes, but this also means that the Design Team does not necessarily know how “complete” your entry is at one time. If you get stuck, ask questions!

NOTE: Submitting product data does not publish an HPD. HPDs may be published solely through the HPD Builder which is a product of the HPD Collaborative. If you are interested in publishing your Portico data as an HPD, see the instructions for linking to your HPD Builder account via our API.
