The Only Artist to Win Two Olympic Gold Medals The Only Artist to Win Two Olympic Gold Medals By Pierre Gricius For many years the painter and graphic artist, Jean A self-portrait of the Jacoby, was the only official Olympic champion from Luxembourg painter, Luxembourg.1 At the arts contests he won two Olympic draughtsman and gold medals. These prizes were awarded to him for graphic artist water colours: in 1924 in Paris for the triptych, ‘Etude de Jean Jacoby Sport’ (Corner, Départ, Rugby), and in 1928 Amsterdam Photo: Pierre Gricius Archive for ‘Rugby’. At two additional Olympic Games, he was distinguished with an ‘Honourable Mention’: in 1932 for ‘Before the Goal’, and in 1936 ‘Abfahrtslauf (Ski)’. But more of that later. Coubertin’s ‘Pentathlon of the Muses’ The Olympic arts contests were the favourite child of Pierre de Coubertin. In order to reunite ‘Muscle and Mind’, the IOC founder invited people, ten years after the Games of the first Olympiad, to a congress in the Comédie Française. To be sure, the ‘expartners’ had not yet had any c hildren, as he wrote later in his memoirs, but none theless a closer approach between the long divided was successful: It was no mere matter of chance that in ancient times writers and artists gathered together at Olympia to celebrate the Games, thus creating the inestimable prestige the Games having enjoyed for so long. Wishing to revive not so much the form but the very principle of this millennial institution, because I felt it would give my country and mankind as a whole educational stimulus they needed, I had to try and restore the powerful buttresses that had supported it in the past: the intellectual buttress, the moral buttress and, to a certain extent, the religious buttress.2 Pushed by Coubertin, the existing ‘Pentathlon of the Muses’ became a part of the Olympic Games, consisting of the areas of architecture, literature, music, painting and sculpture. Yet the echo of the IOC President was limited. Even at the premiere, the organisers of the Games were unwilling to realise the project, so that the arts contests became more or less Coubertin’s private affair.3 First-day cover with the Luxembourg special stamps for the 1952 Only a few architects, writers, composers and artists Olympics in Helsinki and the Cycling World Championships, with handed in their works. • Managing France's Regional Languages
MANAGING FRANCE’S REGIONAL LANGUAGES: LANGUAGE POLICY IN BILINGUAL PRIMARY EDUCATION IN ALSACE Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy by Michelle Anne Harrison September 2012 Abstract The introduction of regional language bilingual education in France dates back to the late 1960s in the private education system and to the 1980s in the public system. Before this time the extensive use of regional languages was forbidden in French schools, which served as ‘local centres for the gallicisation of France’ (Blackwood 2008, 28). France began to pursue a French-only language policy from the time of the 1789 Revolution, with Jacobin ideology proposing that to be French, one must speak French. Thus began the shaping of France into a nation-state. As the result of the official language policy that imposed French in all public domains, as well as extra-linguistic factors such as the Industrial Revolution and the two World Wars, a significant language shift occurred in France during the twentieth century, as an increasing number of parents chose not to pass on their regional language to the next generation. In light of the decline in intergenerational transmission of the regional languages, Judge (2007, 233) concludes that ‘in the short term, everything depends on education in the [regional languages]’. This thesis analyses the development of language policy in bilingual education programmes in Alsace; Spolsky’s tripartite language policy model (2004), which focuses on language management, language practices and language beliefs, will be employed. In spite of the efforts of the State to impose the French language, in Alsace the traditionally non-standard spoken regional language variety, Alsatian, continued to be used widely until the mid-twentieth century.

Abstract This study draws on and interprets an extensive corpus of archived materials, in particular from the Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf, to offer the first wide-ranging critical analysis of the written and visual images of the life and legend of Weimar Germany’s most important ‘modern’ art dealers - Johanna Ey (1864 - 1947), commonly known as ‘Mutter Ey’. Once feted by the press as the most portrayed woman in Germany, she contributed greatly to the careers of artists such as Max Ernst, Otto Dix, Gert Wollheim, Otto Pankok and many others and was a vital figure in the ‘modern’ Düsseldorf art scene until she was evicted from her gallery by the Nazis in 1934. This study opens with a factual overview of Ey’s biography.

  • L'ass Depuis 1890

  • National Identities of Alsatian Jewry Between the Two World Wars
ABSTRACT Title of Document: OUR LITTLE COUNTRY: NATIONAL IDENTITIES OF ALSATIAN JEWRY BETWEEN THE TWO WORLD WARS Ruth Beryl Schachter, Master of Arts, 2006 Directed By: Professor Marsha Rozenblit, Department of History This thesis looks at the Jewish community of Alsace and Lorraine between 1918 and 1940 and its attitudes towards France and Germany. The paper argues that while Jews living in Alsace and Lorraine by and large expressed political loyalty to France, they nevertheless expressed a unique cultural identity that resulted from their particular position of living in a contested borderland. The Jews of Alsace and Lorraine spoke both French and German in their daily lives, remained religiously and culturally conservative, and welcomed in refugees from Eastern Europe and Nazi Germany during the interwar period without concern about social or political repercussions. Alsatian Jews clearly manifested pro-French political tendencies, however unlike their fellow Jews in France, Jews in Alsace and Lorraine remained distanced from the ideological connotations of being French citizens. Thus, this thesis illustrates how political loyalty, and religious and cultural identities manifested themselves differently depending on specific locations.
