Prodigious tenor saxophonist performs in a one-night-only show with his quartet

(Philadelphia, September 27, 2013)—The inimitable and charismatic saxman, Joshua Redman, returns to Philadelphia as part of the Annenberg Center’s 13/14 Series. This Grammy®-nominated artist is one of the most acclaimed and captivating jazz artists today, leading him to be described as “rigorous and porous, edifying and approachable” (New York Times). Redman will be joined by his quartet which includes pianist , bassist Rueben Rogers and percussionist Gregory Hutchinson. This performance will take place on Saturday, November 9 at 8 PM. “When the conversation ensues about who is carrying on the great tradition of jazz musicianship today…if Joshua Redman’s name does not come up, the conversation is not worth having,” exclaims Jam Base of the talented saxophone player and band leader. Redman has been in the international spotlight since his self-titled debut was released in 1993. Since then, he has collaborated with a plethora of celebrated artists such as Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, The Dave Matthews Band, Quincy Jones, B.B. King, The Roots, Yo Yo Ma, Dianne Reeves and Stevie Wonder.

Joshua Redman released his newest album Walking Shadows with the Joshua Redman Quartet in May 2013. Since its release, Walking Shadows has received rave reviews from critics around the world. Rhythmically adventurous in his approach, Redman created an album that “assembles a gentle, sultry, and extremely elegant collection of ballads with a wide array of choices.” (All About Jazz).

For this performance, Joshua Redman will be joined by Aaron Goldberg on piano, Rueben Rogers on bass and Gregory Hutchinson on drums.

Pianist and composer Aaron Goldberg has recorded and toured with a cross-generational array of jazz legends including , Tom Harrell, , and Greg Tardy, in addition to working with his own trio. Goldberg’s trio, featuring Rueben Rogers and , has released two successful , Home and Worlds, both exhibiting the sensitivity and dynamism of this talented collective.

Bassist Rueben Rogers’ command of both the electric and acoustic bass has led him to be one of the most sought after bassists of his generation. He has worked with world-renowned jazz artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Charles Lloyd and Dianne Reeves. Rogers has toured extensively around the world and has recorded over 70 albums.

Described as “the drummer of his generation” (Jazz Magazine), Gregory Hutchinson is one of the most highly respected musicians of our time. His mastery of timing and expression of rhythms have given him the opportunity to work with a variety of talented jazz musicians including , Harry Connick, Jr and Wynton Marsalis.

Hutchinson’s time signatures and beat compositions have won him praise from the hip-hop community as well, leading him to work with artists such as Common, Kareem Riggins and Questlove.
