LIFE IN THE TREZEVANT COMMUNITY WINTER 2018

New Room for the Spirit EXECUTIVE STAFF

Chief Executive Officer Kent Phillips From the CEO Kent Phillips Chief Financial Officer Dawn Wade I am incredibly proud of the spiritual services that the Reverend Robin Hatzenbuehler, Reverend Julie McKenna, Dina Smith, our Administrator: Allen Morgan Chapel Committee and a host of volunteers provide for our residents Paul Martin and staff on a daily basis. While only one of many dimensions of wellness we find to be integral to the Trezevant experience, our Resident Services Director spiritual services set us apart and makes us truly special. Kimberly O’Donnell I have always felt that spiritual programming done well demands Development Director appropriate space. Chapels and churches are special places for a reason; the work done in them is sacred, and so these spaces must Nora Conaway balance many things well – function, reverence, security, seriousness, Director of Sales comfort, peace. Our St. Edward Chapel clearly maintains that Libby King appropriate balance and it serves as a wonderfully spiritual space. But there has always been a need to offer similar space closer to our healthcare residents, who may be less able to make the journey to our chapel. Thankfully, through the kindness shown by those who fund the Trezevant Foundation, we have been able to realize the repurposing of our third-floor all-purpose room in the Allen Morgan Center into the spiritual space that will finally serve our least mobile residents. We now have a second chapel, thoughtfully designed, bright and reverent, taking cues from St. Edward Chapel and continuing its rich trezevantmanor.org tradition. To be added to or removed Our spiritual experiences are deeply personal, yet through our from our mailing list, or to receive embrace of the spiritual approach we are better connected; it is part Treelines online, please call and parcel to the joy of living at Trezevant. Nora Conaway at 901.251.9242, or email [email protected]. Thank you for your gifts that allow us to increase that joy!

Estella grew up in Memphis, attending Booker T. Washington High School and went on to get a degree in communications and public relations at Memphis State University. She began her career in healthcare working in admissions at Methodist Hospital while she was attending school but, after completing an internship at The Med, she was offered a permanent position there becoming the manager of community events and media relations. The highlight of her time there came in 1986 when she planned the first Mar- tin Luther King birthday celebration sponsored by The Med and the AFL-CIO and which was covered by all three national TV networks. Estella returned to Methodist Hospital in community relations for a few years, followed by a short ser- vice in the Hackett administration, receiving a masters degree in organizational communications, several years of teaching at the University of Memphis and Christian Brothers University, and owning a boutique public relations agency. While owning her PR firm she did work for healthcare organizations and had the privilege of working on the gubernatorial campaign of Don Sundquist. Twenty one and a half years ago she found her home when she went to work at the Mid-South Food Bank. In 2011, after the retirement of her predecessor, she became the president and CEO of this orga- nization which works to meet the needs of the many thousands of food insecure individuals in our area. Estelle commented that, “Until she found the Food Bank, she had a maximum shelf life of three to four years in a job.” There she found her passion, a basic need to take care of seniors and children. Estella is married to Dr. Joe Greer, a practicing dentist. They have two sons and a daughter who all live in Memphis and have provided them with six grandchildren. Through the years, they and their family have loved snow skiing at Lake Tahoe, Whistlers in Canada, and Vail, CO. She has certainly found her place on the Trezevant board and we are fortunate to have her here. Our Stories by Sissy Long

Five Things I LOVE Robin Swanson

I LOVE to see the relationship between Walter and Linda Mischke when they work as a team pricing Little Store inventory on Monday afternoons. I LOVE to hear Helen Jabbour share how it thrilled her to be given a box of old, stained and wrinkled lace, donated to Dottie Digs, for sorting and cleaning. I LOVE to hear how happy a Little Store customer is when we have everything on their shopping list. I LOVE to tell the story behind a Dottie’s treasure to its new owner. I LOVE being part of a community that works, laughs, and encourages together. P. Appealing décor in the Little Store led to a successful Christmas Open House.
