^Itlayodan iSckooi Song We're a band in league for learning, Boys and girls make up our host,

Mayodan is the school we're attending,

It's the name that we love most,

"Faith and Courage" is our motto*, "Love and Knowledge" is our aim, And we'll labor boldly as we go, And ne'er our school defame. Chorus: Mayodan, thy name proclaim! The school we hold most dear. Mayodan, to thee we sing With voices loud and clear.

Hearts and minds are all united, For one common cause we fight For devotion to school we are plighted We try to do what's right. Let us join our hands together To be faithful, sure and true, Pure of heart and mind forever, Yes, our whole lives through.

Lessons learned in school we'll cherish, We will stive each day to win; Give our town and country our service, We'll be faithful to the end; So we sing while marching onward, Doing right with might and main, "Live for God" shall be our watchword; And His Kingdom gain.

CIASS of ly

On a bright September morning in mobs 1946, of eager youngsters appeared at Mayodan School to begin their education This first year, because there were so many, were we divided into two sections, with Mrs. Virginia Loftis and Mrs. Julia Tu rner as our teachers. This was to us an exciting year in many ways, especially when most of us had our first train ride—all the to Stoneville!

In the second grade we had Mrs. Lucille Reid and Mrs. Margaret McCollum as our teachers. This is the year we really be- gan to realize why we were in school. Under the direction of our third grade teachers, Miss Annie Martin and Mrs. Pearl Van Noppen,we learned to write, and felt very proud of ourselves. Two years passed, and most of us found ourselves in the sixth grade under Mrs. Paulene Seaman, and Miss Lula Hines. Miss Hines entertained us by singing, dancing, and shooting water guns at ants on the walls, to our immense delight.

When our seventh year in school arrived, we felt ourselves very grown up because, directed by our two teachers Mrs Irma Crews and Miss Elizabeth Smith, we all participated in a magazine sale with the high school students.

Mrs. Irma Crews again was our teacher with Mrs. Maude Lemons when we reached the eighth grade. This year the boys and girls were separated into different rooms. We enjoyed the hew ways of working that year, especially changing classes and be- ing 'floored", having to stay in the classroom while everyone else went out to recess. We also were given more privileges that year than ever before. Consequently we had the most "wonderful" time that we had had since we entered school However one of the greatest disappointments in our whole school career was our plan to go to Raleigh, which did not materialize. At the end of the last year in elementary school, I know that we left Mrs. Lemons with more of our names on her paddle than she had space for! Believe me, she used it! We had graduation exercises from the eighth grade to high school almost exactly like the Seniors, even diplomas! '

The following year, 1955, was our biggest, for we began high school . _ We assembled that first day bright and early, asan- x.ous Freshmen. Under the leadership of Mr. j. C. Atkinson and Mrs. Betty Hicks, we pulled through that year. Our class Of- ficers that year were President-Ross Watson; Vice President-Jimmy Grogan; Secretary-Mildred White; Treasurer- William Hatcher . Those representing the Freshmen that year as Homecoming Candidate were Scarlette Case;and May Court Attendants,Charlotte Gann and Betty W.lkms. That year was important and exciting because we could join many different clubs and had still more privileges. Before we knew it summer had come and gone, and we were Sophomores at last!

As Sophomores we didn't feel as if we were the "small fries" of high school . By this time some of our old classmates had dropped out, and we had only one section of our class, with Mr. Blaine Miller as our homeroom teacher. Chosen as officers were President-Dean Yates; Vice President-Scottie Via; Secretary-Ernest Johnson; Treasurer-Jimmy Grogan. Sophomore Home- coming Candidate that year was Betty Wilkins; and for May Court Attendants we chose Nellie Gregory and Mildred White (Early m the spring we ordered our class rings, with ruby sets flanked on one side by, a hornet emblem and on the other byour state emblem.) Someofus were even so fortunate as to go to the State Fair at Raleigh with the Seniors. Summer was here again and: we were eager also for our Junior year, when we expected to have even a better time than before.

Juniors at last! We could hardly wait until the arrival of our class rings. When that day finally arrived, Mrs. homeroom Crews, our teacher, and Mr. Duncan, our principal, were as eager and excited as we were to get them on our fingers Our Jun - •or class officers were Pres.dent-Jimmy Grogan; Vice President- Emily Crews; Secretary-Scottie Via; Treasurer-Mildred White ' b representing the Junior Class that year were Homecoming Candidate, Brenda Kallam; and May Court Maid of Honor :y Ja Vomer, with Nellie Gregory, ... aa*4 Who said that the Class of '58 of "dear old Mayo High" had no ambition? Come with me to the year 1968 and we shall see just how ambitious this class really is!

As I look into the crystal ball, I see that ROGER TAYLOR is coach at our former dear rival, Madison High. He's teaching them some of our tricks. On the side, he's a regular Romeo!

SHELBY ANGEL writes the lovelorn column for the local paper, The Mayodan Times. Inciden- tally, the editor of this publication is none other than our own co-editor of the school paper, FRANK IE CARLTON.

After watching T. V. for so long, KEITH BLACK now owns the T.V. station at Greensboro. BARBARA BARROW has a job there singing commercials.

MRS. SHIRLEY EASTER and MRS. BRENDA KALLAM are heading a campaign for the couples who think they're ready for marriage. They speak each night on "The Advantages and Disavan — tages of Early Marriages."

MRS. SCARLETT CASE and her husband own a tourist court in Daytona Beach, Florida. She runs a nursery on the side.

MRS. MINA THOMPSON is touring the world with her husband, who is in the army. They're now in the South Sea Islands.

GENE VENABLE is president of a small republic in South America. His personal aide is SCOTTIE VIA.

NORMAN TUGGLE and WAYNE DALTON are co-owners of the Inter-City Dragstrip located between Freetown and Possum Town. Come on out; racing every night! (This isa paidadvertisement ) .

JUDY GRAVLEY, not married yet, is private secretary to the owner and manager of Gravley's Radio Repair Shop in Greensboro.

SO NJA RICHARDSON, smallest girl in our class, is now happily married and living in Washington, D. O, where her husband works. Incidentally, she named her first child Frankie —the name beings back memories

ROSS WATSON has finally achieved his goal, chief detective at the Bureau of Investigation in New York City.

LEFTY THORCKMORTON at last escaped a "certain someone" and is now basketball coach at one of the small colleges in the state. Who would have thought he could do it?

CAROLYN DALTON, after taking a business course at Woman's College and then a photo- graphers' Course, has finally made up her mind. She's the assistant in a large photographing con- cern in

MRS. BETTY WILK INS decided she just wanted to live a happy married life, so she's now doing just that in Greensboro, and is the proud mother of a bouncing baby boy. Congratulations! . . .

^Prophecy

JIMMY GROGAN, voted the boy most likely to succeed in his senior class, certainly lived up to his title, for he is chief electrical engineer for the General Electric Company in Schenectady, New York

WILLIAM HATCHER finally overcame his shyness, is married, and is making a career of the Air Force

NANCY JO VARNER is an interior decorator for The Modern Home in Los Angeles. She also is married to a hometown boy.

ERNEST JOHNSON, after working so many years in Crews' Market, is now owner and manager of Ernie's, a large super-market in Charlotte.

RememberwhenMILDREDWHITEusedto say she would never get married? Well, she did! She is also private secretary (as well as wife) to the owner of a large used-car lot located on highway 220-South

LEON HURD and his wife moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he is a disc jockey at radio station WLAC. His program, called Danceland , is on from 7:00 to 12:00 in the evening.

EMILY CREWS, after working so long, has finally reached the top. Today, she is a fashion de- signer for The Fashion House in San Francisco.

ODELL WELCH, one of the most likeable boys in his senior class, attended college on a foot- ball scholarship, and is now playing professional football

After admiring High Point College for such a long time, BETTY EASTER decided she would en- roll there. Since hergraduation from High Point College, she has a position in Raleigh and is married to a graduate of the same college.

Remember UDELL WESTON, the child crooner? Well, he is now a professional singer in New York and is sometimes referred to as the "modern Sinatra". His first record was released last week .

CHARLOTTE GANN's dream has finally come true. She's happily married and the mother of a darling girl baby named LeAnn . She lives over on the K-Fork Road.

ERNEST HYLTON, the whiz in Spanish class, is a teacher of Spanish at Tri-City Consolidated School located at Dan Valley.

Remember the way NELLIE GREGORY used to say she just wanted to get out of school? Guess what? She actually went to college and is now a social worker in the Bronx.

DEAN YATES, better known as "handsome" when he was in high school, is a model for men's clothes in San Diego. As he will take his first screen test next week, perhaps we'll have a movie star from our class after all!

I, MONNA-RAE ALLRED, have finally reached my goal. I make my debut on Broadway next week as the star ^f the 1 " 968 performance of "South Pacific . Oeator

As you come to the end of a journey

That soon will be memory lane,

You're leaving golden days behind

That will never come again .

You sadly leave the portals,

Where there 's been born a dream

Which will ever keep you pressing on,

To follow, follow the gleam.

And the path of life is before you,

Luring and bidding you on.

And you must go to take your place

In the future that you have won.

Farewell to joys of high school days,

From these you now depart.

Although you go, the memories will live

Forever in your heart.
