Neatness, cleanliness, and appropriateness are the keystones of school dress and appearance at Salisbury High School. The purpose of the SHS is to promote a school atmosphere where academics and good behaviors are primary. Salisbury High School’s goals and vision are reflected each day by ALL stakeholders; therefore, a dress code policy promotes the ideals of a professional academic environment.

The SHS Dress Code policy is to achieve three goals: 1. Promote a respectful learning environment. 2. Promote a safe learning environment where dress does not interfere with the successful and safe completion of learning activities. 3. Promote an equitable and inclusive learning environment in which the dress code does not negatively impact any group based on race, sex, , identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, , socio-economic status, and/or body type/size.

The responsibility of proper dress and grooming rests primarily with the student and his/her/their parents or guardians. We ask that students and parents work to ensure that the goals outlined above are being met with the student’s school dress attire.

In addition, a student’s personal dress and appearance must comply with any and all applicable state and federal safety regulations, especially while attending a lab or internships.

Allowable Dress & Grooming: · ​ Students must wear including: Pants, , , or the equivalent worn at the and be appropriately sized (no bedroom shoes) · ​ ​All clothing must have fabric in the front, back, sides, and underarms with no space between the and the bottom so that midsection and back are not exposed.*** See chart · ​ All clothing must cover and private parts.​ ​Undergarments must be worn and not visible. · ​ Clothing must be suitable for all scheduled classroom activities including physical education, science labs, internships and other activities where unique hazards and situations exist.

Additional guidelines: ● May not be strapless ● Must have a for each shoulder that is at least three inches or larger.

Pants ● Leggings (ie: , ) may be worn IF the top that is worn come to at least top of thigh Shorts and ● Shorts/skirts may be worn if the garment is not excessively short or tight. (General rule: Higher than two inches past fingertips). Shirt can not be longer than short/skirt and shorts/skirt must be visible (longer than shirt) Any clothing (tops and bottoms) that has holes as a part of the design must not show private parts

Non-Allowable Dress & Grooming:

See through clothing or excessively tight clothing are prohibited.

Pajamas to include: pant, “oneis”, , and other headwear (durags) may not be worn in the building. Hats or may serve a reasonable purpose under specific circumstances or be a sincere expression of recognized religious belief. Only under these specific and unique circumstances, may hats or headgear be worn in all buildings. This would include declared school-spirit days and theme days. ● No bandanas of any color are to be visible or to be permitted to be worn in any (to include headgear) ● Clothing may not depict, advertise, or advocate the use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana or other controlled substances. ● Clothing may not depict pornography, or sexual acts. ● Clothing may not use or depict hate speech targeting groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, identity, religion, socio-economic status, or body type/size. ● Offensive clothing can sometimes be subjective to the individual; however, students should be aware that if symbols, words or pictures on clothing cause a substantial disruption of school, they will be asked to remove and replace the offensive clothing.

To this end, we ask that students and parents be considerate of how dress choices affect the safety and of others.
