Clothing in France
CLOTHING IN FRANCE For their day-to-day activities, the French, both in the countryside and the cities, wear modern Western-style clothing. Perhaps the most typical item of clothing associated with the French is the black beret. It is still worn by some men, particularly in rural areas. The French are renowned for fashion design. Coco Chanel, Yves Saint-Laurent, Christian Dior, and Jean-Paul Gautier are all French fashion design houses whose creations are worn by people around the world. Traditional regional costumes are still worn at festivals and celebrations. In Alsace, women may be seen in white, lace-trimmed blouses and aprons decorated with colorful flowers. Women's costumes in Normandy include white, flared bonnets and dresses with wide, elbow-length sleeves. A traditional symbol of the region, the famous Alsatian headdress was abandoned after 1945. Today, this can only be admired during certain cultural and tourist events. Varying widely from one part of Alsace to another, the traditional costumes reflected the social standing and faith of their wearers. Consequently, Protestant women in the North would wear the colors of their choosing; where as Catholics from Kochersberg (to the northwest of Strasbourg) wore only ruby red. Some women would decorate the hems of their skirts with velvet ribbons. Others, particularly in the south, would wear printed cotton clothing, often made of silk for special occasions with paisley patterned designs. The aprons, worn everywhere throughout Alsace, were plain white. However, on Sundays it was not uncommon to see silk or satin aprons decorated with embroidery, and worn over skirts or dresses.

Career Center General Guidelines for BUSINESS CASUAL and BUSINESS FORMAL ATTIRE Interviews still require business formal attire while other corporate meetings and events can be attended in business casual. Almost two thirds of workers today wear business casual clothes regularly to work. Here are some basic guidelines and website references to clarify the dress code when the corporate/company event you plan to attend requests that you achieve a certain look. Business Casual for Men • Basic business casual dress is generally considered a polo shirt/khaki/navy pant combo. • Dockers and a button down shirt kick the concept up a notch. The key to this look is wearing a shirt that has a collar. • Add a sports coat to achieve a dressy, casual look. • Shoes should be tie or loafer style but never tennis shoes, boots or beach sandals. • Belts, shoes and socks should compliment the outfit. Matching belts and shoes as a rule of thumb is complimentary. No white socks. • No short sleeve shirts with a tie, shirts with logos, wrinkled clothing or denim jeans. Business Casual for Women • Women should select pantsuits that coordinate in color or may opt for khaki/navy pants with a polo or long sleeve button blouse. • Skirts and dresses can also be considered casual dress worn with hose/stockings. If a skirt is worn, utilize a simple buttoned shirt or blouse. • Closed toe shoes should be worn. Never sandals. • Avoid any shirts with logos, flannel pullovers or any jean type or denim pants. Business Formal for Men and Women • For men, the standard look for business formal attire is dress slacks (not Dockers) with matching coat and white or blue shirt with coordinating tie.

EMPLOYEE DRESS CODE POLICY The following are guidelines regarding acceptable business attire for employees of Centenary University. The impression that we, as employees of the University, present to others is as important as serving as role models of professionalism for our students. The University has adopted a business casual dress code Monday through Thursday, and allows jeans to be worn on Friday for Centenary Spirit Day. Employees who prefer to dress in more formal traditional business attire should feel free to do so. Business casual wear encompasses many looks but it really means casual clothing that is appropriate for a professional office environment. It is clothing that allows you to be comfortable at work yet always look neat and professional. It means clothing that is clean, unwrinkled, and not too tight, revealing, or baggy. We ask that you consider each day’s activities when determining what to wear, as there are situations when traditional business attire may be required and is more appropriate. Your supervisor may exercise reasonable discretion to determine appropriateness in employee dress and appearance. Employees who do not meet a professional standard may be sent home to change. AMUN’s Dress Code Like most Model UN Conferences, AMUN has a specific Dress Code for all conference attendees. For your convenience, the full text of this dress code is copied below. This information is also available in our Conference Handbook. Our dress code is meant to be inclusive while encouraging a professional atmosphere for deliberations. If you have any concerns about AMUN’s Dress Code or just need clarification please contact us at [email protected]. The appearance of AMUN participants provides the first impressions of their delegation to other representatives. Attention to proper appearance sets an expectation for professionalism and competence. In order to demonstrate respect to fellow representatives, Secretariat members and distinguished guests of the Conference, AMUN requires conservative Western business attire for all representatives and Secretariat during all formal sessions, including the final sessions on Tuesday. IJCC, Vol. 6, No. 2, 83 〜92(2003) 15 A Study on the Characteristics of 20th Century Womenfs Undergarments Seo-Hee Lee and Hyeon-Ju Kim* Assistant Professor, Dept, of Fashion and Beauty, Konyang University Instructor, Dept, of Clothing Science, Seoul Women's University* (Received June 23, 2003) Abstract This study aims to classify -women's undergarments of the 20th century by periods, and to examine their characteristics. The research method consists of a literature study based on relevant documentary records and a demonstrative analysis of graphic data collected from each reference. The features of women's under garments obtained from the study are as fallows: First, silhouette changes of outer garments appear to influence the type and style of a new undergarment. Second, technological development results in a new type of undergarments. Third, the development of new material appears to influence functions and design of undergarments. Fourth, social changes including the development of sports affects the changes of undergarments. As seen so far, the form or type, material, and color in undergarment diversify when fashion changes become varied and rapid. As shown before the 20th century, the importance of undergarment's type, farm, and function gradually reduces according to the changes of -women's mind due to their social participation, although it still plays a role in correcting the shape of an outer garment based on the outer silhouette. Almost everyone has had a similar thought when a special event is about to happen. The selection of formal wear is associated with exciting times in our lives. We might be headed to a formal dance, a special party, a family wedding, or a number of other occasions that require formal attire. In addition to being exciting, it can also be overwhelming or scary...especially for the first time participant. Formal wear or other special clothing can be either rented or purchased. Some rules are the same for both options, but others are different. So, how do you decide what to wear? Costs of Renting vs Buying In some situations, this decision is the easiest one to make. If you are part of a wedding party where everyone wearing tuxedos or dresses needs to look alike, then it is probably best to rent if that option is available. However, you can shop around for the best price for renting the same dress or tux or suit as many retailers carry the same or similar items. On other occasions, if you simply do not have enough money to purchase what you want, then renting may be your best option. Keep in mind, however, that buying an outfit does not mean that you have to buy something new. Thrift stores, garage sales, resale stores, outlet stores and other similar sources are available as well.
