From Our Vicar:

Dear friends

You may have noticed by now that we have a new, special candle in each of our churches. These were given out at the Diocesan event at the cathedral in January, marking the beginning of the year of pilgrimage. By lighting the candle each time we meet together for worship, we are reminding ourselves of our ongoing journey of faith, not just as individuals, but as fellow travelers. Various other artefacts are also going to be used throughout the Diocese over the coming months and you’ll be informed of the events that are planned more locally.

One of those artefacts is a Tedi Pererin (Pilgrim Bear). There are 4 of these making trips across the schools of the Diocese, but we have our own too. She is called Penny and her photograph is below. She helped me judge the Christmas Trees (this is the winning tree) and also had a lovely time. I don’t doubt that she’ll popping up around the Benefice when you least expect her!

I’ve named her Penny after Penelope, the wife of Odysseus. Traditionally, her name is associated with marital fidelity, but I prefer to think more generally that her message to us is one of faithfulness and loyalty to our Christian beliefs, to our Benefice and to the Diocesan 2020 Vision. This comes in 3 parts: Telling a Joyful Story, Growing the Kingdom of God and Building our Capacity for Good.

I encourage you to take your own spiritual journey seriously, but also to consider how you might be able to join in with those things that are already taking shape around the Benefice, or indeed what you might like to see happen.

If you are interested in exploring and progressing your personal journey, you might like to commit to An Hour Out. It won’t hurt, I promise, but it will involve discussing with me your prayer and devotional practices. Just give me a ring or drop me an email if you’d like to take that step.

Every Blessing Maggie

A message from Chris Robinson, soon to be licensed (probably in March at Coity Church) as NSM in our Benefice.

It will be great, finally, to make a start and work with you in the churches and in the . Maggie has asked me to write a short introduction about my background.

Durham Diocese sponsored me through theological college after which I ran a church for five years. It is surprising how the big questions have not changed at all, however, some of the opportunities today are better than ever.

The main part of my life was in a boarding school looking after other people's children. My wife and I looked after around 60 girls aged 11 - 18. We were told to be like a father and mother to them. The main thrust of the job was to provide motivation. Often, we found that we had more belief in their ability or integrity than they had. It was by working together as a team that their abilities were enhanced, and confidence was increased. May God guide us in our efforts and help our work to be fruitful, Chris.

Please welcome Chris and pray for him as he prepares for his ministry here

Collects

THE PRESENTATION OF CHRIST: Almighty and everlasting God, clothed in majesty, whose beloved Son was this day presented in the Temple, in substance of our flesh: grant that we may be presented to you with pure and clean hearts, by your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

3rd BEFORE LENT: Almighty God, who alone can bring order to the unruly wills and passions of sinful humanity: give your people grace so to love what you command and to desire what you promise, that, among the many changes of this world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

CREATION SUNDAY: Almighty God, you have created the heavens and the earth and made us in your own image: teach us to discern your hand in all your works and your likeness in all your children; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit reigns supreme over all things, now and for ever.

TRANSFIGURATION SUNDAY: Almighty Father, whose Son was revealed in majesty before he suffered death upon the cross: give us grace to perceive his glory, that we may be strengthened to suffer with him and be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
