A PRIVATE JET EXPLORATION OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST ARCHIPELAGO

Traveling aboard our own charter plane gives us plenty of time to explore the far corners of the island nation’s Sea—from Bali to , and . With longtime Stanford Travel/Study faculty leader Scott Pearson, we’ll begin in Bali, a place I fell in love with some 30 years ago for its serenity and natural beauty. We’ll also view the world’s largest Buddhist temple in Borobudur, travel by riverboat deep into the Borneo jungle to watch wild and visit Island, where dragons roam. We’ll also learn about the unique funeral rituals of the Tana Toraja people on the island of Sulawesi. That’s a whole lot of Indonesia in under two weeks. Join us!

TANA TORAJA, SULAWESI Faculty Leader

SCOTT PEARSON, who has studied economic change in developing countries for five decades, taught economic development and international trade at the Food Research Institute at Stanford for 34 years. He has coauthored a dozen books, won several awards for his research and teaching, and advised governments on food and agricultural policy. Scott has worked and traveled abroad extensively in Asia, Africa and Europe. Between 1979 and 2004, Scott spent at least two months every year in Indonesia. As one of our most versatile faculty leaders, Scott has accompanied more than 60 Travel/Study trips on all seven continents. Scott’s lectures will cover the early Indonesian kingdoms: Srivijaya (7th-13th centuries), Sailendra (8th-9th), Saivite (9th-10th), and Majapahit (13th-16th); Indonesia under Dutch colonialism (1604-1942); independent Indonesia “Scott is a consummate under Sukarno’s Guided Democracy (1942-1967); and Indonesia under Suharto’s New Order (1967-1998) and elected rulers (1998-present).
