Borobudur, Java
- An introduction to our Island Hopping
- Our Indonesia group tour specialists
Indonesia group tour
Sarah Howard
With years of experience operating in Indonesia, we have designed this tour to take in some of our favourite places from over the years. Indonesia is so vast that even visiting the four main places this tour takes in, you will still travel some 1,200+ miles once in the country!
01993 838 119 sarah.howard:@audleytravel.com
Jack Tydeman 01993 838 118 [email protected]
You will start with a visit to Yogyakarta in central Java, the cultural heart of the island. Visit the Sultan's
Sarah and Jack have both been with Audley for over five
years and are incredibly knowledgeable about travel in Indonesia. They have both encountered orang-utan in Kalimantan, visited Borobudur and Mount Bromo at sunrise; and travelled through the island of Bali on numerous occasions.
Palace before escaping the city with a gentle cycle ride down through small villages surrounded by paddy fields and arrive at the gates of the ancient Hindu temple complex of Prambanan on your bike. Move on to Borobudur, the largest Buddhist relic in the word, where
th
you will see the sunrise from this 8 century monument.
For anyone keen to add on more time in Indonesia post tour, you are in very good hands as they have also been to more far flung islands including the jungles of Sumatra, funeral ceremonies and diving in Sulawesi, and tracking down the prehistoric Komodo Dragon on Flores.
Sure to be a highlight is Tanjung Puting National Park in southern Kalimantan, home to over 5,000 wild orangutan and numerous other animals. You will spend three days exploring here, making your way through the narrow backwaters under the rainforest canopy.
Climate
Moving on to eastern Java you will visit the spice markets and mosques of Surabaya, wide leafy boulevards and Dutch architecture of Malang and the awe-inspiring vista of Mount Bromo's smoking volcanic crater at dawn.
Indonesia straddles the equator and thus has the benefit of warm weather year round. October is the tail end of the dry season and you will hopefully only see a few showers in the day and hear the odd thunderstorm at night. As a topical rainforest, Tanjung Puting does generally see a little more rainfall and generally speaking in Indonesia, the further east you go the longer the dry season lasts.
Flying on to Bali you will end the trip in the beautiful town of Ubud, known for art, music, architecture and dance. Explore the quieter north of the island from here, including the stunning Lake Bratan.

Flights & visas
Flights
Singapore Airlines
Singapore Airlines are considered to be one of the best airlines in the sky. Their economy class recently took first place in the Guardian and Observer Travel Awards 2011. You can enjoy a 32” seat pitch and 1,000 on demand entertainment options are available on KrisWorld, presented on a 10.6-inch personal screen with the highest resolution in the sky, and the largest in its class. In business class their seats offer unrivalled comfort with angled lie flat seats or fully flat seats (depending on the aircraft). In suite class you have the ultimate flight experience with a private cabin.
If you need to fly with a different carrier for any reason (eg airmiles, preference, route) we can arrange alternative flights for you. We can also operate the trip without international flights if you prefer.
- Domestic flights
- It is worth being aware that flights within Indonesia often do not follow their schedules leading to delays
on the ground. In a worst case scenario amendments to the airline and route you are travelling will be necessary. Our representatives will be there to assist you if you encounter any of these problems as they are best placed to help you at the time.
For domestic flights in Indonesia, Audley will always endeavour to use EU approved airlines - Garuda Airlines, Mandala Airlines, Airfast and Ekspres Transportasi Antarbenua (operating as PremiAir), Metro Batavia and Indonesia Air Asia - where appropriate as all other airlines in the country are subject to an EU operating ban.
Many of the non EU approved airlines have in fact passed the strict safety requirements of neighbouring countries they fly to including Singapore, Australia and Japan and the operating ban only prevents them from flying in to EU airspace, of which none of these airlines have ever had routes. On this tour you will fly from Java to Kalimantan on a non EU approved airline as none of the airlines listed above fly this route. We recommend you read current FCO advice and ensure you are comfortable with this. Please check your travel insurance for validity if flying on these routes - Campbell Irvine Insurance Brokers are happy to provide coverage starting from £99pp for an annual multi-trip policy.
Your specialist will send you an email on booking that states that we have given you this information and we need you to reply to this in order for us to process your booking. Please feel free to ask your specialist any questions as they are well versed with the situation.
Visas
- Indonesia
- UK citizens can obtain a 30 day visa on arrival for US$25 per person. All other nationalities should check
with the Indonesian Embassy. As with most countries your passport must be valid for six months after the date of departure from Indonesia (this is strictly enforced), you may also need one unstamped double page free in your passport. If you are staying longer than 30 days in Indonesia it is possible for us to arrange a visa in advance for you - please speak to your specialist for more details.
Important Note: We cannot under any circumstances guarantee that your visa application for any country will be accepted. However, in our experience refusals are extremely rare. Visa information is given in good faith and is accurate to the best of our knowledge.

Tour Information
Group size : The group size is kept to
a maximum of 16, this ensures that the trip is a more personal experience and that you can always hear and speak to your guides. The small group size also ensures that your experience of a particular sight is not marred by presence of too many people.
Local guides : An experienced
English-speaking local guide will meet you on arrival in Solo. You will have a local guide for each area you travel to. Our local guides are carefully selected for their in-depth knowledge,
Klotok boat in Tanjung Puting, Kalimantan
interpretation, and ability to manage large groups as well as their skills as charming hosts.
Activity level – Low
The vast majority of this trip does not require any significant level of physical fitness or agility. However, there are a few elements which involve getting in and out of boats or walking on rough unsurfaced paths and so a certain degree of physical dexterity will be required. An experienced guide will be on hand to help anyone should they need it. Some excursions also involve an option to climb steps or paths which may be steep, loose and/or wet underfoot. You should also be aware and prepared for the following on this trip:
Women with offerings, Bali
Extending your trip : You have the
option to extend your trip in Indonesia. Maybe a few days relaxing by the beach in Bali or nearby Lombok, discovering a nearby region such as Komodo Island on a short tour or for the more adventurous heading to Sulawesi for the unique funeral rituals. You may also choose to break the journey to and from Indonesia with a stop over in Singapore. On any extension, you will be looked after by our carefully
Home truths : We aim to provide
accurate and detailed information and to make you aware of the less positive aspects of the journey you are undertaking, some facts you should be aware of are outlined below:
Money : Indonesian Rupiah (Rp) is widely available in the UK and is the only currency used in Indonesia (with the exception of your visa on arrival). You can take up to Rp 5,000,000 in to the country without declaring it and as long as you are sensible with keeping it in hotel safes or locked in your luggage then we would suggest this limit is best used. ATMs are unreliable and have small limits for withdrawals; you can obtain money from hotels on your card but they also normally have small limits; banks have irregular hours and the process of changing money is time consuming. Some restaurants and shops will take card but not all. All hotels you staying do take all major credit cards. selected local agent.
* High altitude – Mount Bromo sits at around 2,300m and some warm clothing is needed (hat, gloves, jumper and trousers suggested – you can layer up as needed). * In Kalimantan a certain level of dexterity is required for boarding the klotok boats. Please also be aware that during the day, the bathroom facilities on board are very basic. * Some of the roads in Indonesia are poorly maintained making some journeys quite bumpy. *It may on occasion be necessary to carry your own luggage through airports or from the vehicles to hotels and vice versa.
Health & Fitness Requirements :
To ensure that all participants get the most out of the tour, it is important that you are fully aware of the level of activity and fitness and medical health required to successfully complete this itinerary. Please read this dossier carefully prior to confirming your place on the tour, and having established the facts, it is your responsibility to contact us with any concerns regarding individual levels of fitness, health or ability. Please be aware that our tour leaders have the right to exclude customers from the tour if they feel they are not sufficiently fit, healthy or able to complete the tour without affecting its safety, comfort or smooth progress. If you would like to discuss any of these issues further please call
us on 01993 838 110 to discuss in more detail.
Single Travellers : We especially
welcome single travellers on our tours. You have two options, you can choose to share a room with another single traveller on the tour and pay the standard tour price or you can choose to guarantee sole occupancy of a room, in which case a supplement is payable.
Expenses : Most costs are covered on
this trip and you are only likely to need extra spending money for laundry, tips, drinks and a handful of meals that are not already included. We will provide tipping guidelines in your final itinerary pre travel. Wine will perhaps be your biggest expense as it is taxed at over 400% in Indonesia. In Tanjung Puting alcohol is not available as this is a dry area of the country.
Dining : All meals indicated will be taken as a group. Some will be in hotels, some local restaurants and in Kalimantan all lunches will be buffets on board the boat. Facilities in local restaurants are basic so be prepared.

Why travel with us?
Quality service when you are travelling
We take a good deal of care when choosing our travel partners overseas, taking into account their quality of service, guides and vehicles. We have built up many long-standing relationships, ensuring that they deliver the level of service demanded by Audley clients. Our local guides and drivers, where appropriate, are the people you will meet. In many cases we know them personally, in all cases we ensure that they are of the highest calibre. They are there to do much more than show you specific sights and provide factual information. They will be able to tell you about local life, culture, cuisines and customs; and, where applicable, act as translator. In certain parts of the world a specialist guide is more appropriate, for example, a wildlife expert.
