Flights Singapore Singapore Airlines are considered to be one of the best airlines in the sky. Their economy class recently Airlines took first place in the Guardian and Observer Travel Awards 2011. You can enjoy a 32” seat pitch and 1,000 on demand entertainment options are available on KrisWorld, presented on a 10.6-inch personal screen with the highest resolution in the sky, and the largest in its class. In business class their seats offer unrivalled comfort with angled lie flat seats or fully flat seats (depending on the aircraft). In suite class you have the ultimate flight experience with a private cabin.

If you need to fly with a different carrier for any reason (eg airmiles, preference, route) we can arrange alternative flights for you. We can also operate the trip without international flights if you prefer.

Domestic flights It is worth being aware that flights within Indonesia often do not follow their schedules leading to delays on the ground. In a worst case scenario amendments to the airline and route you are travelling will be necessary. Our representatives will be there to assist you if you encounter any of these problems as they are best placed to help you at the time.

For domestic flights in Indonesia, Audley will always endeavour to use EU approved airlines - Garuda Airlines, Mandala Airlines, Airfast and Ekspres Transportasi Antarbenua (operating as PremiAir), Batavia and Indonesia Air Asia - where appropriate as all other airlines in the country are subject to an EU operating ban.

Many of the non EU approved airlines have in fact passed the strict safety requirements of neighbouring countries they fly to including Singapore, Australia and Japan and the operating ban only prevents them from flying in to EU airspace, of which none of these airlines have ever had routes. On this tour you will fly from Java to Kalimantan on a non EU approved airline as none of the airlines listed above fly this route. We recommend you read current FCO advice and ensure you are comfortable with this. Please check your travel insurance for validity if flying on these routes - Campbell Irvine Insurance Brokers are happy to provide coverage starting from £99pp for an annual multi-trip policy.

Your specialist will send you an email on booking that states that we have given you this information and we need you to reply to this in order for us to process your booking. Please feel free to ask your specialist any questions as they are well versed with the situation.

Visas Indonesia UK citizens can obtain a 30 day visa on arrival for US$25 per person. All other nationalities should check with the Indonesian Embassy. As with most countries your passport must be valid for six months after the date of departure from Indonesia (this is strictly enforced), you may also need one unstamped double page free in your passport. If you are staying longer than 30 days in Indonesia it is possible for us to arrange a visa in advance for you - please speak to your specialist for more details.

Important Note: We cannot under any circumstances guarantee that your visa application for any country will be accepted. However, in our experience refusals are extremely rare. Visa information is given in good faith and is accurate to the best of our knowledge.

Java is a study in contrasts: traditional and modern; rich and poor; spiritual and worldly stand side by side on this bustling island that is home to over 130 million people. In fact almost two thirds of Indonesia's population live here on an island that covers just 7% of the country's total land mass. No wonder that the traffic jams can be so solid that, for many, they've become home. Many cities have the look of a modern metropolis but still have patches of sugar cane, water is sold by the can and most of the hotels have experienced some sort of scandal or revolution, or a visit from Charlie Chaplin or Joseph Conrad. The temples and are some of the most spectacular you will see and away from the cities the horizon is always pimpled with mountains and you are never far from the rice, which glows like green fire. Yogyakarta introduction

The city, which is usually referred to as ‘Jogja’, is the most popular destination for those travelling in Java and is a convenient base for exploring the surrounding area including the ancient relics of Borobudur and Prambanan. Jogja is known as the cultural capital of Java and as such has a multitude of worthwhile places to visit, most of which are conveniently found in the walled Kraton in the old town. Hotel lunch at the Phoenix group lunch

Once you have checked in to the Phoenix and freshened up you can enjoy a welcome lunch at the hotel. Dinner at a local restaurant group dinner

After you have freshened up and perhaps had a bit of a siesta, spa treatment or dip in the pool, you will meet up to head out for a welcome dinner at one of our favourite local restaurants. Here you will have chance to meet the group and discuss the arrangements for your time in Jogja.

Sunday Morning city tour of the old town 07 October, 2012 group excursion with lunch in a local restaurant

The tour gives you an opportunity to see some of the cultural sights that Jogja's old Phoenix Hotel, town is famous for. You will spend most of your time at the kraton (the Palace of Yogyakarta the Sultans), still the hub of traditional life and the centre of the old town. The kraton was built by Prince Mangkubumi in 1755 who the following year changed his name to Sultan Hamengkubuwono (the Universe on the Lap of the King). The walled city of the kraton is home to around 25,000 people with over 1,000 of these serving the Sultan. In the centre of the kraton you will find the Bangsal Kencana (Golden Pavilion) which is an excellent example of the grand elegance that typified Javanese architecture during this period.

Near to the kraton you will find the Taman Sari complex, also know as the water castle (or the old Dutch name of waterkasteel). This once served as a pleasure park of pools for the sultan and his cohorts and was completed in 1765. Although most the site lies damaged from war and earthquake, the bathing pools have been restored. Next door to the Taman sari is the bird market which you may find somewhat chilling due to the many hundreds of birds on sale as pets. There is also a smaller section where you will see snakes and other reptiles. Ask your guide to take you up Pasar Ngasem where from the walls of the Taman Sari you can enjoy a good view out over Jogja.

Dancer from the Ramayana, Java For history buffs, visiting the Sono Budoyo museum in front of the kraton you can admire the extensive collection of antiques and historical artefacts. As well as the collection inside, the building itself (designed by Van Kartsen) is another interesting example of Javanese architecture. The area is also known for its , a unique art using beeswax, paraffin and a multitude of dyes to create the colourful cloth.

From the kraton you will walk up Jalan Malioboro where you can see the souvenir shops selling all manner of gifts from Ramayana masks and puppets to 'I Love Jogja' t-shirts! It should take around 20 minutes to reach Jogja's main market of Pasar Beringharjo. Here you have the chance to explore the two floor building which is piled high with batik and other clothing as well as huge stalls selling local fruits, vegetables and spices.

You will finish the morning with lunch in a local cafe. Ramayana ballet at Prambanan group excursion with dinner in a local restaurant

The Ramayana story presented in this performance is similar to that engraved on Prambanan temple. The famous Hindu story is summarised in four scenes and the entire story is presented in a series of dance movements done by beautiful dancers accompanied by gamelan music. You are invited to really plunge into the story and observe each movement of the dancers to know the course of the story. There is no dialog among the dancers and it is only the storyteller who describes the course of the story through Javanese songs (there will be a handout given so you can try to follow).

There are two places in Jogja where the Ramayana ballet is performed. First, in Purawisata Yogyakarta where it has been performed for 25 years. The other place to see the ballet is the open stage (and closed-stage in bad weather) in the Prambanan temple complex. We will try to ensure you see the performance at Prambanan, however the dates can (and do) change at late notice and it is also weather dependent.

Dinner is included in a local restaurant after the show.

Monday Cycle ride to Prambanan 08 October, 2012 group excursion with lunch in a local restaurant

Please pack up your luggage this morning as it will be taken to your next hotel Saraswati Borobudur, while you enjoy the day. Yogyakarta

Take a leisurely cycle ride through the beautiful central Javanese countryside and sleepy villages. After an early start you will begin by stopping at Gunung Merapi, 'Always on Fire', where from the Kaliadem village you will hopefully enjoy a magnificent view of this very active and see the ravines which the molten streams of lava created.

After this your guide will get you geared up on your bikes (helmets and water provided). As you pass through the various villages and countryside you will have plenty of opportunities to stop for photos and your guide will also be able to show you the locals engaging in various activities such as tobacco harvesting, rice farming and snake fruit plantations. You will also stop at various small temples that are regularly unearthed in the area and you can see the original carvings which may date back as far as the 8th century. Prambanan, Java Once you have reached the plains at the bottom of Merapi you will reach Candi Plaosan, just a short distance from Prambanan. Candi Plaosan was not only one of the last major Buddhist temples to be constructed before Hinduism and then Islam became the dominant religions but it was also the largest in scope. Because of its somewhat isolated location, this temple complex has not received the same level of interest that has befallen central Java's more famous temples of Borobudur and Prambanan. However, those willing to venture a bit off the beaten path will find a visit to Candi Plaosan to be well worth the effort. The complex itself is made up of 174 small buildings, 116 are stupas and 58 are shrines. Many of the buildings have inscriptions dating from the 9th century and the detailed reliefs, restored in 2010, are incredible to see.

The huge Prambanan complex was built in the middle of the 9th century, about 50 years after the construction of Borobudur. Unfortunately there is very little early history about the complex but it is thought to have been constructed to commemorate the return of a Hindu dynasty to Java. It is thought that during the latter stages of construction a powerful earthquake or volcanic eruption struck central Java causing many deaths. This was believed to be a message from the Gods and Prambanan was quickly abandoned as the population fled to east Java. Similar to Borobudur the temple complex lay buried in layers of ash and it was only in 1811 that a surveyor in the service of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, came upon the temples by chance. Despite their rediscovery Prambanan remained neglected for decades until reconstruction was started in earnest in the 1930s. In 1991 the temple complex was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and now most of the temples within the inner compound have been restored however work remains on going following an earthquake in 2006.

Although there are 237 temples in the Prambanan site the inner compound contains the most beautiful and best restored. The relief panels found on these temples are of incredible detail and the 47 metre high Shiva temple in the central compound is a real master of construction. Shiva is known as the Destroyer and inside the temple are several chambers containing statues of Shiva and other Hindu Gods related to Shiva. Either side of the Shiva temple are two other temples dedicated to Brahma the Creator and Vishnu the Keeper.

Please note the route is largely downhill so a high level of physical fitness is not required, however these small roads can have heavy traffic so keep your wits about you, your guide will be with you all the time and your vehicle will be following. Lunch will be taken near Prambanan itself.

16 Itinerary in detail Island Hopping Indonesia : Group Tour

Close by and within the Prambanan archeological park, are the lesser known and Lumbung temples, all Buddhist, demonstrating the religious harmony experienced in Indonesia throughout the ages. Candi Sewu complex is 800 meters north of Prambanan itself and is the second largest Buddhist temple in Java, Borobudur bring the largest. Candi Sewu predates Prambanan and was most likely originally built in the 8th century. Candi Lumbung is a Buddhist temple built around 850AD by the Mataram Dynasty, and consists of a single central temple surrounded by 16 smaller temples.

Depending on the group, you then have the option of visiting . The history of Ratu Boko is unclear, and much of what is understood about the site comes from inscriptions and even folklore. The oldest inscription found on the site is believed to date back to 792AD, naming the site Abhayagiri Wihara. Archaeologists believe that the ruler of the Saliendra Dynasty between 760-780, Rakai Panangkaran, built Ratu Boko after he resigned from his leadership to find spiritual peace and concentrate on religious matters. Abhayagiri Wihara means ‘peaceful Buddhist monastery’ and the site chosen has fairly spectacular views. Of Buddhist faith, Rakai Panangkaran was also responsible for the building of Borobudur temple during his reign. A mix of Buddhist and Hindu structures are found on the complex, including the Buddhist Dyani Budha, Stupika, Terakota Tablet, and a gold and silver plaque with a Buddhist inscription. Three small Hindu temples, as well as Yoni, a Durga statue, a Ganesha statue and a plaque with an inscription to Rudra, the other name for the god Siwa (shiva).

At the end of the tour you will travel west of Jogja to your hotel in the surrounds of Borobudur.

Tuesday Sunrise at Borobudur 09 October, 2012 group excursion

You will leave your hotel at around 5am for the short walk to the 8th century Saraswati Borobudur, Buddhist relic of Borobudur. Find yourself a quiet spot to sit and wait for the sun Yogyakarta to rise over the horizon enjoying the serene and spiritual atmosphere that seems to have infiltrated every rock. As you look out to the hills and forests surrounding you it isn't hard to imagine how explorers must have felt when they stumbled out of the forest in 1814 to find such a sight lost to the world for almost 500 years.

The awe-inspiring monument features the largest and most complete collection of Buddhist relief sculptures on the walls of its seven terraces - all of which detail the story of Buddhist cosmology. It was thought to take 75 years to complete and although it's exact purpose is still unclear it was evidently a shrine to Lord Buddha and guide to the noble path of the Buddha. It is thought that Borobudur was abandoned following the 14th century decline of Buddhist and Hindu kingdoms in Java, and the Javanese conversion to Islam. It was then completely covered in a deep layer of following the eruption of nearby Mount Merapi and worldwide knowledge of its existence was only sparked in 1814 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the then British ruler of Java.

Borobudur, Java Following your trip to Borobudur you will stop to see a local village at work.

Perched in a valley beside a river, the village of Candijero has a great setting. It has numerous cottage industries you can see as well as the opportunity to meet some of the locals. You may see people tending the fields, making noodles or tofu for market and constructing small hand crafted souvenirs. The village works with a local tourism initiative and this is a good way to provide a small amount of extra income for the local population. The smiles and waves you receive from everyone you pass are a sight to treasure and the rural atmosphere is a refreshing change from in Java's normally crowded towns and cities.

Crocodile River, Kalimantan

Kalimantan introduction All meals are included in Kalimantan

Covering the lower two thirds of , the third largest island in the world, Kalimantan is known as the land of a thousand rivers. The main street of each town is usually a river and there are probably more boats that cars. Although many cities are pretty faceless 'oil towns' the main draw card for Audley clients is Tanjung Puting National Park - arguably the best place in the world to search for wild orang-utan in the dense rainforest.

Pangkalan Bun introduction

Pangkalan Bun is the gateway to Tanjung Puting National Park and a pleasant stop over if travelling elsewhere in Kalimantan. This tidy town with its wide streets, attractive residences and warm and friendly locals creates a convivial and appealing atmosphere.

From the airport you will travel around 25 minutes by car to the small port town of . At Kumai you will be welcomed on board your Klotok boat by the friendly crew and begin your journey upstream.

The first stage of your journey is along the main shipping route that leads out to the Java sea and you will pass several trade and passenger boats, as well as the simple shacks that the Dayak tribes have built on the waterfront. After about 30 minutes you will escape the river traffic and head up a tributary called the 'Big' . This river forms the border of Tanjung Puting National Park and slowly narrows and fills with mangroves and palms as you journey along. The open upper deck allows you to soak up the sunshine and look out on to the rainforest where you may see , crab-eating macaque, false gharial crocodile and perhaps even your first orang-utan!

On route you are likely to see all manner of wildlife so having your binoculars and camera handy is a good idea! Tanjung Puting introduction

Staying in Tanjung Puting is something truly memorable. Making your way through the national park, along its narrow backwaters under the jungle canopy, you get an instant feeling of being back to nature. You are captivated completely by the purity of the air, the openness of the night sky with the most remarkable view of the Milky Way, the magnificence and dignity of the gentle orang-utan, the thundering downpours that instantly cool the air, and the clarity of the brilliant crimson sunsets.

The national park itself is mainly composed of low lying swampy terrain with a complex pattern of black water rivers running through it. Mangrove swamps line the rivers with the forest canopy developing away from here up to 150 feet high. Short treks through the forest generally follow ranger's trails but if you want to explore further a field you will be creating your own path through some of Borneo's most pristine jungle.

Itinerary in detail 19 Island Hopping Indonesia : Group Tour

Most people visit Tanjung Puting to see the 5,000 plus orang-utan that are spread wide across the 4,000 square kilometre park. There are three feeding stations in the park and they all provide supplementary food to the orang-utan. This means they cannot remain wholly dependent on the feeding sites and are instead encouraged to explore further a field. The orang-utan that do come to the feeding sites are generally mothers with young offspring and recently released animals that have been rescued or have been orphaned after loggers killed their parents. The feeding takes place on platforms a few metres above the forest floor so they don't feel so vulnerable. You will sit on fallen trunks only about 10 metres away from them and will have rangers along side you. The orang-utan may come to the platform from anywhere in the jungle (there are no areas of the park fenced off for rehabilitation) so you have to be aware to move quickly if you are between them and the food, or indeed if you are between a male and a female. Your guide and rangers will be there to look out for you but these animals can be unpredictable when agitated and they have an extremely long reach and strong grip that has injured people in the past.

The park is generally seen as being much less touristy than Bukit Lawang in Sumatra and Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo. This is largely down to the difficulties in reaching the park and the fact that Dr Galdikas who campaigned for the Park's opening in 1982 has been a strong influence in protecting the area from development. This all means that the park is an amazing experience for those who want to enjoy the rainforest as it was meant to be seen; unspoilt, tranquil areas home to a fascinating array of animal and plant life.

Aside from the orang-utan, some of the larger animal species that you may see in Tanjung Puting include proboscis monkey, , rare clouded leopard, huge wild boar, civet, Malaysian , crocodile, several kinds of deer and a type of wild cattle known as banteng. For the bird lover there are over 220 species here, including the symbolic , kingfisher, white egret and several other endangered water birds. There are also numerous types of fish, leech, snake, frog and other reptilian life lurking in the swampy grounds.

Sensible clothing is of course a must for your time in the rainforest with well worn boots high on the order as heavy may fall at any time of the year. This is a malarial zone so tablets should be taken and 'deet' spray and other prevention methods are strongly recommended.

Camp Leakey:

Camp Leakey is located within Tanjung Puting National Park and was established in 1971 by Dr. Biruté Galdikas. It was named after the legendary anthropologist, Louis Leakey, who was both mentor and an inspiration to Dr. Galdikas as well as Drs. Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey. Originally consisting of just two huts, Camp Leakey is now an assemblage of permanent wooden structures designed to provide a base for scientists, staff, students and PHPA guards.

Over the years, Camp Leakey has supported the research efforts of dozens of scientists and students including graduate students from Indonesia (Univeristas Nasional & Universitas Gajamada) and North America. Projects have ranged from research into orang-utan, proboscis monkey, gibbon and leaf-eating monkey behaviour and ecology, to studies of orang-utan sign language abilities and cognition, to leech behaviour and riverine ecology.

20 Itinerary in detail Island Hopping Indonesia : Group Tour

A 200 metre boardwalk made of ironwood was constructed by the provincial government in the 1970's to bypass the seasonal swamps that can isolate the high ground at Camp Leakey from the river. Used by orang-utan as well as people, the boardwalk may be the first place you will meet one of Camp Leakey's "bicultural" great ape residents. These orang-utan are the last of the ex-captive orang-utan released into the nearby forest during the 1970's and early 1980's. Now, orang- utan rehabilitation is conducted in other areas of the park, but the Camp Leakey residents, mostly females and their offspring, spend their time both in the forest and in Camp. They provide visitors a chance to view free-ranging orang-utan close- up.

After the feeding you may like to take a short trek through the forest or you can head straight back to your boat to return to Rimba Lodge. Back on the boat you will take a freshly prepared lunch on route back downstream to the rainforest station of Pesalat. This is a Government and NGO sponsored site that is attempting to reseed a part of the national park largely destroyed by illegal logging and forest fires. It is quite amazing to see the work involved in trying to Proboscis monkey, Kalimantan recreate rainforest that has taken thousands of years to develop. Your guide will

help you chat to the local villagers working here and you may come across volunteers from other countries that are here to help.

Slightly further downstream is Tanjung Harapan (Post 1) where you can travel in to the jungle to see the feeding at 3pm. This is the smallest of the posts and sees very few visitors. It is a real favourite for Audley, the local family that lives here are as friendly as they come and the kids will be keen to give you a game of ping pong on the weathered table in the middle of the jungle! You can enjoy a trek around the area after the feeding or cross over the river to the Tanjung Harapan village. This is the largest settlement in the area and you can walk through the tiny village seeing the playful kids, small fish farms and local school. The school will be delighted if you want to visit and welcomes any kind of gift, from pens and pencils to a football for the school field (there are approximately 50-60 children).

One of the highlights of their festivities is the Kasada ceremony. Every year, the Tengger people cross the sea of Tengger horsemen at Mount Bromo, sand and climb the highest peak to the crater edge of Mount Bromo, from where Java they cast offerings in the form of live fowl, money and bouquets of flowers into the hissing, seething inner crater. They pray to the god Brahma (from whom Bromo

derives its name) that in the coming year he will grant them good health and a good harvest.

Bali introduction

People say that the Balinese people have reached self-content. They are proud of having preserved their unique Hindu culture against the advance of Islam, the dominant religion throughout Indonesia. This is still reflected in day to day life and can be seen in the numerous ceremonies, festivals and magnificent temples and palaces. The Balinese are skilled artisans and are also noted for their traditional dance, the distinctive music of the gamelan and for their skills in weaving cloth. The rise of tourism on Bali since artists began flocking here in the 60's has not changed local customs and still today it is the law in Bali that no building can be higher than a palm tree. Ubud introduction

Many western artists and intellectuals began visiting Ubud in the 1930's and aided in the expansion of the local Balinese arts and crafts. From this time Ubud became known in Bali, not for its beaches, but for art, music, architecture and dance. It is located in the centre of the island, within 90 minutes of the popular south coast and a couple of hours from the quieter beaches of the north, east and west coasts. The central region of Bali is arguably the most scenic and Ubud is an ideally located town from which to base yourself to explore all that Bali has to offer away from the coast.

The slightly cooler temperatures in Ubud mean exploring the gallery lined streets and markets is a little more comfortable than on the coast, however being located at a higher altitude you will see more here, particularly in the afternoons when tropical showers occur year round.

travelling to the cooler mountain area of Danau Bratan, visiting the market town of and Pura Ulun Danu Bratan. This is a very beautiful and important temple that was founded in the 17th century and dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of the waters. It is built on a small island near the edge of a lake and is one of the most iconic images in Bali. Hidden in forest on the slopes of Gunung Batukaru you will find one of the most beautiful temples in Bali, Pura Batukaru. Mount Batukaru is Bali's second highest mountain and due to it's remote location is less visited than sites such as Mount Batur and Agung. The temple was originally the state temple for the area where Tabanan was an independent kingdom and small pagodas are very spiritual in design and feel. The small white water stream to the left of the temple means that the sound if running water is always present and. From Batukaru the meandering drive to the village of Jatiluwih is through magnificent scenery. Famous for the panorama of it's rice field terraces, the word Jatiluwih literally means "really, really beautiful" and there is plenty of time to photograph the area and village.

Local women heading to a temple, Bali You will have a simple local lunch. Kecak dance performance Pura Dalem temple and dinner group excursion and dinner

On the final evening of your tour through Indonesia you will have the opportunity to see one of the most famous of all Balinese dances.

The Kecak dance is taken from the Hindu epic Ramayana, which tells the story of Prince Rama and his rescue of Princess Sita, who has been kidnapped by the evil King of Lanka, Rahwana, and somehow with the help of the white monkey army, Rama rescues his wife and defeats the evil Rahwana. It is unusual because it has no musical accompaniment like many other Indonesian dances do, instead, a troupe of over 50 men serve as the chorus, providing the music for the story in a series of constant vocal chants that change with the mood of the actors and making a wondrous cacophony of synchronized "chak-achak-achak" clicking sounds while swaying their bodies and waving their hands. From that chanting noise of "chak- achak-achak", then it gave the dance its name Kecak.

The dance lasts roughly an hour and after the dance, you will be taken for your farewell dinner.
