This national park has been chosen as World’s Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO since 1977. Today Tanjung Puting National Park is recognized as home to the endangered species, orangutans. Due to the destructive activities of humans, the wild population has decreased more than 50% in the past decade. Estimates of the current population are less than 60.000 with approximately 7.300 in Sumatra and in Kalimantan for the rest. The number of national and overseas visitors to Tanjung Puting National Park has increased every year. The growth encourages people of Kalimantan Tengah to continue developing other exciting spots for tourism destinations.
