It offers satellite imagery, aerial photography, street maps, 360° panoramic views of streets (Street View), real-time traffic conditions, and route planning for traveling by foot, car, bicycle and air (in beta), or public transportation.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Maps Google Maps: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia • Google Maps began as a tag">C++ desktop program at Where 2 Technologies. In October 2004, the company was acquired by Google, which converted it into a web application. After additional acquisitions of a geospatial data visualization company and a realtime traffic analyzer, Google Maps was launched in February 2005. • The service's front end utilizes JavaScript, XML, and Ajax. Google Maps offers an API that allows maps to be embedded on third-party websites, and offers a locator for businesses and other organizations in numerous countries around the world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Maps Google Maps: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia • Google Map Maker allowed users to collaboratively expand and update the service's mapping worldwide but was discontinued from March 2017. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Map_Maker However, crowdsourced contributions to Google Maps were not discontinued as the company announced those features will be transferred to the Google Local Guides program.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Maps Google Maps: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia • Google Maps' satellite view is a "top-down" or "birds eye" view; most of the high-resolution imagery of cities is aerial photography taken from aircraft flying at 800 to 1,500 feet (240 to 460 m), while most other imagery is from satellites. • Much of the available satellite imagery is no more than three years old and is updated on a regular basis. • Google Maps used a variant of the Mercator projection, and therefore could not accurately show areas around the poles. However, in August 2018, the desktop version of Google Maps was updated to show a 3D globe as the default projection. It is still possible to switch back to the Mercator Projection in the settings. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Maps https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLMggr-4xQY Google Maps: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia • Google Maps for Android and iOS devices was released in September 2008 and features GPS turn-by-turn navigation along with dedicated parking assistance features. • In August 2013, it was determined to be the world's most popular app for smartphones, with over 54% of global smartphone owners using it at least once. • In 2012, Google (in general) reported having over 7,100 employees and contractors directly working in mapping. • In 2017, along with several other services including YouTube, Chrome, Gmail, Search, and Google Play, Google Maps reached over 1 billion users. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Maps
What is Street View https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Street_View • Google Street View is a technology featured in Google Maps and Google Earth that provides interactive panoramas from positions along many streets in the world. It was launched in 2007 in several cities in the United States, and has since expanded to include cities and rural areas worldwide. Streets with Street View imagery available are shown as blue lines on Google Maps. • Google Street View displays panoramas of stitched images. Most photography is done by car, but some is done by tricycle, boat, snowmobile, and underwater apparatus, as well as on foot. https://www.google.com/streetview/ Google Street View

The program maps the Earth by superimposingsatellite images, aerial photography, and GIS data onto a 3D globe, allowing users to see cities and landscapes from various angles. Users can explore the globe by entering addresses and coordinates, or by using a keyboard or mouse. The program can also be downloaded on a smartphone or tablet, using a touch screen or stylus to navigate. Users may use the program to add their own data using Keyhole Markup Language and upload them through various sources, such as forums or blogs. • Google Earth is able to show various kinds of images overlaid on the surface of the earth and is also a Web Map Service client. • In addition to Earth navigation, Google Earth provides a series of other tools through the desktop application. Additional globes for the Moon and Mars are available, as well as a tool for viewing the night sky. A flight simulator game is also included. • Other features allow users to view photos from various places uploaded to Panoramio, information provided by Wikipedia on some locations, and Street View imagery. The web-based version of Google Earth also includes Voyager, a feature that periodically adds in-program tours, often presented by scientists and documentarians. • Google Earth has been viewed by some as a threat to privacy and national security, leading to the program being banned in multiple countries. Some countries have requested that certain areas be obscured in Google's satellite images, usually areas containing military facilities. • https://earth.google.com/web/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Maps • Google Local Guides is a program launched by Google Maps to enable its users to contribute to Google Maps and provide them additional perks and benefits for the work. • The program is partially a successor to Google Map Maker as features from the former program became integrated into the website and app. • The program consists of adding reviews, photos, basic information, videos and correcting information such as wheelchair accessibility.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_XcjHZWZ0eXQ/SwfH9vtAiBI/AAAAAAAAABg/JCSc_bDXm4k/s1600/gps+pics.jpg ► GPS has changed the way we navigate. ► On June 26th ,1993 the United States of America’s Air Force launched the 24th Navstar satellite into orbit to complete the systematic grid of satellites called the Global Positioning System or GPS ► The Selective Availability (SA) was lifted May 1st 2000 to bring highly accurate GPS ability to general public ► Elecronic GPS based navigation devices are rapidly replacing the Road map and Atlas for driving navigation. Global Positioning System
► GPS is now a U.S. Department Of Defense (DOD) system ► GPS currently has 24 satellites that orbit the earth in 12 hours. There are 5 - 8 visible anywhere. ► Four satellite signals can compute positions in three dimensions and the time offset in the receiver clock. ► Accuracy can be as good as 10 meters but accuracy is always getting better with software upgrades. Global Positioning System Accuracy
► 3G iPhone w/ A-GPS ~ 8 meters
► 3G iPhone w/ wifi ~ 74 meters
► 3G iPhone w/ Cellular positioning ~ 600 meters ► If you need greater accuracy you can combine an external Bluetooth GPS receiver with your device and get that accuracy down to the 2-3 meter range. If you require more accuracy than that you will need to invest in a mapping grade GPS receiver.

Not only does Maps allow users to take a stroll through most neighborhoods in the world, it can be used to conduct local business searches, find real-time traffic conditions, and even see local bike trails. Google Maps (and the newly revamped Google Earth) remain powerful and versatile tools—and most of us are only scratching at the surface of what they have to offer. Here, we present 26 cool things you didn’t know Google Maps could do.”...
