Archdiocesan Guidelines
During the pandemic, the dispensation that was given by the Archdiocese of St. Louis concerning Mass at- tendance on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation is still in effect. For those who are older or who have well founded fear for their health, should in no way feel under any pressure to attend Mass at this time (provided, of course, that you do your best to sanctify the Lord’s Day religiously at home). Those who have flu symp- toms or who have reason to believe they have been exposed to the virus should NOT come to church at this time, as an act of charity to others.
Our current occupancy limit is 50% which is set at 450 persons. To maintain social distancing we have roped off every other pew—please do not remove these dividers at any time. We have hand sanitizer and face cover- ings available for you in the 3 main vestibules.
Also, the Archdiocese has requested that ushers not take up the collection during Sunday Masses. Your dona- tions may be placed in the black donations bins located near the main entrances of the church, or you may continue donating online. Thank you very much.
More information can be found on the Archdiocesan Website: archstl.org/coronavirus-covid-19-mandates-and -directives
Donations are welcome to help the Oratory offset the cost of the disposable masks and hand sanitizers that are located in each of the 3 main vestibules. Thank you for your help! Thank you very much.
Message from the Rector
My Dear Faithful,
This November 22nd we celebrate the External Solemnity of the dedication of our exquisite jewel of a church, St. Francis de Sales Oratory. Testament of the power and glory of God etched in brick, stone and stained glass, the Oratory has been the site for numerous baptisms, weddings and funerals; all conferring the graces of that same powerful God upon the Faithful. It is only right that we celebrate a place where so much supernatural good has been effectuated.
Our religious community of priests, oblates and candidates, though physically absent from you from this im- portant feast day will be united in prayer, imploring God for the protection of this sacred place and the means to restore it for future generations.
We are absent, because, with the exception of Abbe Alex, all of us have been placed under quarantine after testing positive for the COVID virus. We are convalescing well under the able care of an experienced doctor. Canon Talarico, who has so graciously been able to come down from Chicago to ensure Sunday Masses here, will expound more upon the details of our situation before his sermon.
We will do our best to ensure daily Masses and Confessions until the end of our quarantine. Plan on our nor- mally scheduled liturgical events unless you hear differently via email or social media. Please God, by the end of the month, with our physician’s blessing, we can resume our normal duties.
Note that the church building will be CLOSED during the afternoons and evenings during this period to ena- ble the priests to say their masses and for the community to do their prayers, as well as the normal upkeep and sanitation of the church building. Otherwise, it will remain open during the mornings and of course, for nor- mally scheduled events such as evening adoration.
Confiding ourselves to your prayers which have already done us so much good, we look forward to our return to public ministry. May God bless you!
Canon Coggeshall

Canon Coggeshall and the faithful of St. Francis de Sales Oratory welcome you, and hope that your time in the “Cathedral of South St. Louis” may be an opportunity to share in the tradition of the Roman Catholic Faith.
Please enjoy the beauty of this building dedicated to St. Francis de Sales, co-patron of the INSTITUTE OF CHRIST THE KING SOVEREIGN PRIEST.
According to liturgical tradition, and the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, Holy Communion is received kneeling and on the tongue. All visitors who are not of the Catholic faith are welcome to join us in prayer, but are requested not to receive Holy Communion. Because the reception of Holy Communion is the sign of Divine and Ecclesial unity, only practicing Catholics who are free of mortal sin, and in full communion with the Catholic Church should present themselves for Holy Communion.
We pray for the full visible unity among all Christians.
To receive more information about the Oratory or if you desire to become a member of the Catholic Church, contact the rectory. St. Francis de Sales Oratory is an Oratory of the INSTITUTE OF CHRIST THE KING SOVEREIGN PRIEST in the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
