The Word Made Flesh
1 The Word Made Flesh et’s begin our study of the Gospel of John with what is called the LPrologue, one of the loftiest and most inspiring passages in the New Testament. It lays out the major premise of the Gospel, so it’s a good way to start our exploration. In spite of its weight and importance, the Prologue is actually quite short, consisting of just the first eighteen verses of John. However, because of their weight and importance, we could easily write an entire book just on these verses. Most scholars believe that portions of these first eighteen verses were an early Christian hymn influenced by Greek and Jewish philosophical ideas. John incorporated the hymn, reworking it a bit, because it captured profound ideas about who Jesus is and the meaning of his life. Before delving into the meat of this section, I want to point out what you no doubt have already noticed, that the Gospel begins 15 Copyright © 2015 by Abingdon Press. Genesis 1:1 starts, “In the beginning. ” John’s use of these words is no accident. He is pointing back to the creation story. For now, I merely want you to notice the reference, and I’ll say more about it at various points throughout the book. The premise of the entire Gospel, so beautifully introduced in the Prologue, is that Jesus embodies God’s Word. -

The Definition of Sin The history of the human race as presented in Scripture is primarily a history of man in a state of sin and rebellion against God and of God’s plan of redemption to bring man back to himself. Therefore, it is appropriate now to consider the nature of the sin that separates man from God. We may define sin as follows: Sin is any failure to conform to the moral law of God in act, attitude, or nature. Sin is here defined in relation to God and his moral law. Sin includes not only individual acts such as stealing or lying or committing murder, but also attitudes that are contrary to the attitudes God requires of us. We see this already in the Ten Commandments, which not only prohibit sinful actions but also wrong attitudes: “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor” (Ex. 20:17 NIV). Here God specifies that a desire to steal or to commit adultery is also sin in his sight. The Sermon on the Mount also prohibits sinful attitudes such as anger (Matt. 5:22) or lust (Matt. 5:28). Paul lists attitudes such as jealousy, anger, and selfishness (Gal. 5:20) as things that are works of the flesh opposed to the desires of the Spirit (Gal. -

I find this paradigm by putting marriage in dialogue with an ecclesial practice already the subject of rich trinitarian, christological, ecclesial theological development: consecrated religious life. -

To examine Metz‘s sources and how others expand upon his work, I propose a two-part thesis. Part one arises from critical appraisal of sources upon which Metz relies in formulating his idea of memory. While the thinkers Metz draws upon are secular Jewish philosophers, Metz appropriates key notions in specifically theological ways by linking them with the memoria passionis of Jesus Christ and the Jewish religious roots of memory. Furthermore, Metz‘s apocalyptic/eschatological hope for the future differs from secular and postmodern hopes for something surprising, new, and redemptive because Metz advocates real, faith-filled content for these ideas. Part two of the thesis is critical-constructive. Metz‘s idea of memory has the potential to be more than an anthropological category. While reticent to speak of God‘s memory, anamnestic reason becomes a way of speaking about God‘s work of salvation for and with humanity. This becomes clearer when his idea of memory is considered in conjunction with the theology of God‘s memory in the writings of Latin American Candace Kristina McLean liberation theologian Gustavo Gutiérrez. -

When you compare the account of David bringing the Ark of the Covenant up to Jerusalem in 2 Samuel 6, with the account of Mary going up to the home of Zechariah and Elizabeth in Luke 1, there are several striking parallels that show that Luke is deliberating drawing out the parallels between when Mary Visited Elizabeth and when David brought the Ark into Jerusalem to show that Mary is the true Ark of the Covenant. -

P. 2 “God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, has made even us, who were dead through our sins, alive together with Christ. .and he has raised us up with him in Christ Jesus and given us a place with him in the heavens” (Eph. 2:4–6). Christian existence means being with Christ, and thus means being where he is, sitting at the right hand of the Father. The Church has her homeland where Christ is. In terms of her head and of her goal, she is a heavenly Church. Since she is an earthly Church, she knows that she is a pilgrim Church, stretching out to reach her goal. The Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Church,Lumen Gentium, contemplated the Church as the people of God. If one reads this great conciliar text as a whole, it is clear that the Council sees the Church as the people of God entirely on the basis of her goal, to be the heavenly, perfected Church (Lumen Gentium, 2). It is only the goal that gives meaning to the path. The Church is the pilgrim people of God, and her goal is the heavenly Jerusalem. It is only when we contemplate the Church in her earthly-heavenly transi- tional existence that we have the whole Church in view. This is why we begin by presenting some witnesses for this way of seeing the Church; then we ask why the sensitivity to this perspective has been largely lost today, and above all why the heavenly dimension of the Church is often forgotten; finally, we should like to indicate some perspectives on how it is possible to regain this vision of the Church as heavenly-earthly reality. -

Preface Thomism and the Challenge of Integral Ecology The late Fr. Richard John Neuhaus said that a “Thomist of the Strict Observance,” was one who believed that the thought of the Angelic Doctor is the intellectual hardware that can run any software. He was thinking, he said, of the Jesuit scholar Norris Clarke, whose phil- osophical work aimed at showing how Thomas Aquinas could make sense even of the process philosophers Alfred North Whitehead and Charles Hartshorne. At Fordham University my then-girlfriend Cathy (now my wife) would take me to lunch with Father Clarke, then in his late eighties, a spry gnome-like character who would re- gale us with his intellectual adventures of bringing St. Thomas to every conceivable endeavor. Upon his mentioning a lunch date with the Dalai Lama, I asked him what he had said. Father Clarke looked at us and said very seriously, “I told him, ‘You have wonderful medi- tative practices, but your metaphysics are terrible!’” The Thomist of the Strict Observance then attempted, well, to enlighten him. I’m not sure I agreed with everything Father Clarke said about metaphysics or Thomas Aquinas, but that impulse to bring Thomism to bear on intellectual projects and problems out there in the world was remarkable to me. I do not doubt the intellectual seriousness, the learning, or the rigor of their work. -
