SECOND SUNDAY OF DECEMBER 6, 2020

GOD’S DELAY READINGS FOR THE WEEK In times of great difficulties scoffers taunt us, “Where is God? Why hasn’t your Lord come to save you now?” December 7-13 And we of faith respond much in the same way as Peter did in today’s second reading: the “delay” of ’s second coming is MONDAY Is 35:1-10 not any type of punishment or failure to keep the divine promise, Ps 85:9ab, 10-14 but a loving sign of God’s patience. God is giving everyone the 7 chance to seek repentance. Lk 5:17-26 God does not make life more difficult. Rather, God lessens our burdens as once before for the Jewish exiles returning home to TUESDAY Gn 3:9-15, 20 Judea after captivity in Babylon. It was God who personally led Ps 98:1-4 them, making a “straight highway” for them across the desert. 8 We join with our ancestors of faith, who hoped that they might see Eph 1:3-6, 11-12 God’s Chosen One before them and who eventually realized that Lk 1:26-38 the Lord was also walking with them side by side. WEDNESDAY Is 40:25-31 Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. 9 Ps 103:1-4, 8, 10 AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Mt 11:28-30

Sunday: Second Sunday of Advent THURSDAY Is 41:13-20 Monday: St. ; Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day 10 Ps 145:1, 9, 10-13ab Tuesday: The of the Mt 11:11-15 Blessed Mary Wednesday: St. FRIDAY Is 48:17-19 Thursday: International Human Rights Day; begins at sunset 11 Ps 1:1-4 Friday: St. Damasus I Mt 11:16-19 Saturday: SATURDAY Zec 2:14-17 12 Jdt 13:18bcde FEAST OF FAITH Lk 1:26-38 Watching for Christ’s Coming

In the season of Advent, we look to the coming of Christ at the end of time, and we prepare ourselves to celebrate his first SUNDAY Is 61:1-2a, 10-11 coming among us at . Remembrance of the past is combined with preparation for the future. Memory meets action. 13 Lk 1:46-50, 53-54 1 Thes 5:16-24 In a certain sense, the Mass is an Advent prayer. At the Last Jn 1:6-8, 19-28 Supper, did not tell his disciples, “Never forget what I did for you.” Instead, he said, “Do this in remembrance of me.” He calls us to remember by doing, to combine memory with action. In the celebration of the Eucharist, remembering and doing become one. Jesus is as present in our midst as he was in that upper room, breaking the bread and sharing the cup; but it is a new kind of presence, seen only with the eyes of faith. In the heavenly liturgy, there will be no need of sacraments, for there, “celebration is wholly communion and feast” (Catechism of the , 1136). Here, things are different. We have only glimpses and flashes of the beauty that is yet to be. And yet, in the liturgy, we truly participate in the heavenly liturgy. The Mass is our foretaste of the joys of heaven. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Weekly Church Schedule

On December 8, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, the solemn defined by Blessed Pius IX in 1854. As Our Lady Immaculately Conceived is the patroness of the United States of America, this is a holy day of obligation in the United States.

Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, "full of grace" through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception. That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Blessed Pope Pius IX proclaimed on December 8, 1854: "The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Saviour of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of ." — Catechism of the Catholic Church

7 Reasons to Celebrate Holy Days of Obligation:

1. We get to unite with Catholics throughout the world to show how special the day is. 2. We get to unite with Christ in the Eucharist. 3. We get to worship God and love Him. 4. We get to put our priorities in order once again. 5. We get to pray in the highest form of prayer there is – The Mass. 6. We get to stand out from the crowd and proclaim to the world our faith. 7. We get the opportunity to share the faith with a friend who is non-Catholic and may not understand why we do such things.

Catholic schools are good for children, families, communities, the nation, and the Church. And today more than ever, they need our support. Why should we champion Catholic schools? Here are three reasons—and there are certainly more!

1 Catholic schools provide religious and moral formation in a world badly in need of values. 2 Catholic schools excel in offering high quality education, particularly to those most in need. 3 Catholic schools are the responsibility of the entire Catholic community.

As the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has written,

"Catholic schools afford the fullest and best opportunity to realize the fourfold purpose of Christian education, namely, to provide an atmosphere in which the Gospel message is proclaimed, community in Christ is experienced, service to our sisters and brothers is the norm, and thanksgiving and worship of God is cultivated."

In the face of increasing secularization, Catholic schools provide an atmosphere that privileges Gospel values and the role of parents as the primary educators of their children.
