WRS Journal 13:2 (August 2006) 26-43 PRESBYTERIANISM IN AMERICA The 20th Century John A. Battle The final third century of Presbyterianism in America has witnessed the collapse of the mainline Presbyterian churches into liberalism and decline, the emergence of a number of smaller, conservative denominations and agencies, and a renewed interest in Reformed theology throughout the evangelical world. The history of Presbyterianism in the twentieth century is very complex, with certain themes running through the entire century along with new and radical developments. Looking back over the last hundred years from a biblical perspective, one can see three major periods, characterized by different stages of development or decline. The entire period begins with the Presbyterian Church being overwhelmingly conservative, and united theologically, and ends with the same church being largely liberal and fragmented, with several conservative defections. I have chosen two dates during the century as marking these watershed changes in the Presbyterian Church: (1) the issuing of the 1934 mandate requiring J. Gresham Machen and others to support the church’s official Board of Foreign Missions, and (2) the adoption of the Confession of 1967. The Presbyterian Church moves to a new gospel (1900-1934) At the beginning of the century When the twentieth century opened, the Presbyterians in America were largely contained in the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. (PCUSA, the Northern church) and the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. (PCUS, the Southern church). There were a few smaller Presbyterian denominations, such as the pro-Arminian Cumberland Presbyterian Church and several Scottish Presbyterian bodies, including the United Presbyterian Church of North America and various other branches of the older Associate and Reformed Presbyteries and Synods. -

Professor of Systematic Theology , Sacred Heart Major Seminary Introduction The role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the economy of salvation is rooted in the mystery of the Incarnation. God chose to unite creation to himself by becom- ing incarnate ex Maria virgine.1 The eternal plan for the created cosmos, therefore, includes the Blessed Mother. The role of Mary in the economy of salvation is, therefore, not something marginal but central. In fact, the Blessed Virgin Mary is part of God’s plan from all eternity. The theology of Marian co-redemption un- folds in seven key moments: 1) Mary’s predestination as the Co-redemptrix; 2) Mary’s Immaculate Conception; 3) Mary’s free consent to be the Mother of the Word Incarnate at the Annunciation; 4) Mary’s union with her Son “in the work of salvation” from “the time of Christ’s virginal conception up to His death”;2 5) Mary’s union with Christ’s passion and her offering of her crucified Son to the Fa- ther; 6) Mary’s glorious assumption body and soul into heaven; 7) Mary’s ongoing maternal mediation of the grace with and under Christ, the one Mediator. Each of these moments deserves individual attention, but all of them combine to illuminate Mary’s essential role in the work of redemption. 1. KNOW & GROW TOPIC OF THE WEEK: WHAT IS THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION? In the Latin rite of the Catholic Church, De- cember 8th is the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. In the United States and in a number of other countries, it is a holy day of obligation. When December 8th falls on Satur- day, the precept of attending Mass is still ob- served in the United States. According to the Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year, when the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception falls on a Sunday (as it does this year), it is transferred to the following Monday. So… what is the Immaculate Conception? Please be with us on Monday, December 9th as we ob- serve the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the There's a popular idea that the Immaculate Blessed Virgin Mary. The Mass schedule for that day is: Conception refers to Jesus' conception by the 6:45am at St. Mary’s Church Virgin Mary. It doesn't. They were influenced by the fact that we were largely a Christian country and our laws were based on the Bible. And most still attended church which would have had an influence on the way they lived. 1 11. Byrne of the Diocese of Springfield, has issued a "Decree and Order" merging Our Lady of Guadalupe and Immaculate Conception Parishes in Holyoke into St. Jerome's Parish, also in Holyoke. This reconfiguration will take place August 15, 2021. The "Decree" along with the supporting documents have been posted on www.diospringfield.org. This merger came at the direct request of the parishes involved and was the result of many years of discussion between the three faith communities. “Since July 2020, our three parishes have worked closely in preparation for our formal merger on August 15. Parish leaders are convinced that the reconfiguration they have proposed will foster a stronger sense of community and promote a better sharing of resources,” said Father Mark Stelzer, the administrator of St. Jerome Parish. “The truly wonderful thing about this merger is that the request to merge came from parish leaders and was not imposed on parishioners by diocesan leadership. The entire process by which the Holyoke merger came about reflects the type of collaboration that builds stronger parishes and a more vibrant Church,” he said. -
