St. John Paul II’s Redemptoris Mater – Mary’s Maternal Mediation June 19, 2014 I was asked to open our annual novena talks this mystery of Her Son’s incarnation and redemptive year with Pope St. John Paul II’s encyclical mission. The Seed of Woman By Martin Pickup The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field. On your belly you will go, And dust you will eat all the days of your life; And I will put enmity between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.” Gen. 3:14-15 The above prophecy has been called the protoevangelium of the Bible — the first place in Scripture where the gospel of Jesus Christ is foretold. It is an apt designation. According to clear New Testament statements, the curse upon the serpent in Genesis 3:14-15 was a curse upon Satan and a prediction of his eventual defeat and the defeat of all who follow his path of rebellion against God (Rev. 12:9; 20:2). What we have here is the very first prophecy of the Bible, one that sets up all that Scripture will subsequently say about sin, human redemption, and God‟s victory over the devil. In this paper I want to analyze this Old Testament text and the way in which the ancient Jews and the New Testament writers interpreted it.1 What we will discover is how foundational this passage is to the teaching of the entire Bible. 1 In this paper my discussions of ancient Jewish exegesis of the Old Testament are not offered as proofs of what the Old Testament must be saying. -

EPHRAIM THE SYRIAN’S THOUGHT AND IMAGERY AS AN INSPIRATION † TO BYZANTINE ARTISTS ZAGA GAVRILOVIC INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED RESEARCH IN THE HUMANITIES THE UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM UNITED KINGDOM [1] For students of Byzantine art, St. Ephraim the Syrian is linked with the iconography of the Last Judgment. This paper gives an account of the previous research concerning his part in the development of that theme, although it is usually accepted that all previous conclusions were in fact based on pseudo-Ephraimic writings. However, in this article, a genuine text by St. Ephraim, which confirms that link, is introduced into the discussion. It is pointed out that, thanks to a great number of modern studies and the wider availability of St. Ephraim’s works, it is becoming possible to establish a more general connection between his thought and imagery and the art of the Byzantine world. This article includes a brief survey of the representations of St. Ephraim in Byzantine portraiture and of the iconography of his death and funeral. Professor of Systematic Theology , Sacred Heart Major Seminary Introduction The role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the economy of salvation is rooted in the mystery of the Incarnation. God chose to unite creation to himself by becom- ing incarnate ex Maria virgine.1 The eternal plan for the created cosmos, therefore, includes the Blessed Mother. The role of Mary in the economy of salvation is, therefore, not something marginal but central. In fact, the Blessed Virgin Mary is part of God’s plan from all eternity. The theology of Marian co-redemption un- folds in seven key moments: 1) Mary’s predestination as the Co-redemptrix; 2) Mary’s Immaculate Conception; 3) Mary’s free consent to be the Mother of the Word Incarnate at the Annunciation; 4) Mary’s union with her Son “in the work of salvation” from “the time of Christ’s virginal conception up to His death”;2 5) Mary’s union with Christ’s passion and her offering of her crucified Son to the Fa- ther; 6) Mary’s glorious assumption body and soul into heaven; 7) Mary’s ongoing maternal mediation of the grace with and under Christ, the one Mediator. Each of these moments deserves individual attention, but all of them combine to illuminate Mary’s essential role in the work of redemption. 1. A work destined to become a classic of Marian spirituality was published 160 years ago. St Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort wrote the Treatise on True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin at the beginning of the 1700s, but the manuscript remained practically unknown for more than a century. When, almost by chance, it was at last discovered in 1842 and published in 1843, the work was an instant success, proving extraordinarily effective in spreading the "true devotion" to the Most Holy Virgin. I myself, in the years of my youth, found reading this book a great help. "There I found the answers to my questions", for at one point I had feared that if my devotion to Mary "became too great, it might end up compromising the supremacy of the worship owed to Christ" (Dono e Mistero, Libreria Editrice Vaticana, 1996; English edition: Gift and Mystery, Paulines Publications Africa, p. 42). Under the wise guidance of St Louis Marie, I realized that if one lives the mystery of Mary in Christ this risk does not exist. In fact, this Saint's Mariological thought "is rooted in the mystery of the Trinity and in the truth of the Incarnation of the Word of God" (ibid.). Since she came into being, and especially in her most difficult moments, the Church has contemplated with special intensity an event of the Passion of Jesus Christ that St John mentions: "Standing by the Cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary, the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. -

KNOW & GROW TOPIC OF THE WEEK: WHAT IS THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION? In the Latin rite of the Catholic Church, De- cember 8th is the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. In the United States and in a number of other countries, it is a holy day of obligation. When December 8th falls on Satur- day, the precept of attending Mass is still ob- served in the United States. According to the Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year, when the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception falls on a Sunday (as it does this year), it is transferred to the following Monday. So… what is the Immaculate Conception?
