Emigh, Co-chair Professor Vilma Ortiz, Co-chair Migrations from one location to another can create the need to explain identities that originated in one region and do not quite translate to the new place’s racial structure. Empirically, we know little about racial and ethnic identity construction processes for American-born persons with Black ancestry who were part of the Great Migration in this country. My dissertation analyzes the construction of racial, ethnic, and place identities among first- and second-generation Louisiana migrants who came to Los Angeles during the 1940s to the 1970s. Using data from 47 in-depth life history interviews, I argue that racial and ethnic identity in this case is a product of the interplay between local and national racial structures and meanings, collective memory and nostalgia, and place-based interaction. I find that migrants established an enclave that supported collective memory and collective nostalgia for Louisiana through Louisiana-centered interaction. ii This contributed to attachments and identifications associated with place that were used to modify the Black and Creole racial and ethnic identities of migrants in Los Angeles. Most of the migrants in this study constructed Black identities modified with Creole and Louisiana-based identities. A smaller proportion of migrants had Creole-only, or Black-only identities, but Louisiana-based identities were important for these migrants as well. In addition to the factors associated with racialization, identities were constructed using a combination of ancestry, visible ethnic and racial markers (such as surnames, phenotype, and culture), and place-based factors. The study makes several contributions to the literatures on race, ethnicity, place, Black identities, the Great Migration, and Louisiana Creoles. iii The dissertation of Faustina Marie DuCros is approved. Barthé, Jr. (Doctorate of Philosophy in History) Becoming American in Creole New Orleans: Family, Community, Labor and Schooling, 1896-1949 Summary: The Louisiana Creole community in New Orleans went through profound changes in the first half of the 20th-century. This work examines Creole ethnic identity, focusing particularly on the transition from Creole to American. In "becoming American," Creoles adapted to a binary, racialized caste system prevalent in the Jim Crow American South (and transformed from a primarily Francophone/Creolophone community (where a tripartite although permissive caste system long existed) to a primarily Anglophone community (marked by stricter black-white binaries). These adaptations and transformations were facilitated through Creole participation in fraternal societies, the organized labor movement and public and parochial schools that provided English-only instruction.

Garbow All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT In contrast to the municipalities across the United States that restrict migration and criminalize the presence of immigrants, Philadelphia is actively seeking to attract immigrants as a strategy to reverse the city’s limited economic and political importance caused by decades of deindustrialization and population loss. In 2010, the population of Philadelphia increased for the first time in six decades. This achievement, widely celebrated by the local government and in the press, was only made possible through increased immigration. This dissertation examines how efforts to attract migrants, through the creation of localized policy and institutions that facilitate incorporation, transform assertions of citizenship and the dynamics of race for Colombian migrants. The purpose of this research is to analyze how Colombians’ articulations of citizenship, and the ways they extend beyond juridical and legal rights, are enabled and constrained under new regimes of localized policy. In the dissertation, I examine citizenship as a set of performances and practices that occur in quotidian tasks that seek to establish a sense of belonging. Without a complex understanding of the effects of local migration policy, and how they differ from the effects of federal policy, we fail to grasp how Philadelphia’s promotion of migration has unstable and unequal effects for differentially situated actors.

    UNDERSTANDING SOUTH LOUISIANA THROUGH LITERATURE: FOLKTALES AND POETRY AS REPRESENTATIONS OF CULTURAL IDENTITY by ANNA BURNS (Under the direction of Dr. Nina Hellerstein) ABSTRACT Folktales represent particular cultural attitudes based on location, time period, and external and internal influences. Cultural identity traits appear through the storytellers, who emphasize these traits to continue cultural traditions. The folktales and poetry studied in this thesis show how various themes work together to form the Cajun and Creole cultures. The themes of occupation, music and dance, and values; religion, myth, and folk beliefs; history, violence, and language problems are examined separately to show aspects of Cajun and Creole cultures. Secondary sources provide cultural information to illustrate the attitudes depicted in the folktales and poetry.     “JUST ASK MI ’BOUT BROOKLYN:” WEST INDIAN IDENTITIES, TRANSGEOGRAPHIES, AND LIVING REGGAE CULTURE A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Sabia McCoy-Torres August 2015 © 2015 Sabia McCoy-Torres “JUST ASK MI ’BOUT BROOKLYN:” WEST INDIAN IDENTITIES, TRANSGEOGRAPHIES, AND LIVING REGGAE CULTURE Sabia McCoy-Torres, Ph.D. Cornell University 2015 This ethnography explores the symbiotic relationship between the West Indian Diaspora and performance based, Jamaican originated, reggae culture. The field site was Brooklyn, New York. I analyze the intersections of reggae with racial and cultural identity construction, expressions of gender and sexuality, transnationalism, and place making practices. The formation of a local, West Indian led, reggae related economy is also a subject of focus. In order to theorize the impact West Indians have on Brooklyn and their subjectivities, I develop the concepts transgeographies and figurative citizenship. I argue that the West Indian Diaspora creates transgeographic cultural places that specific sociocultural practices and performance help to form. I offer that performance, action, and material alteration coalesce to physically transform space and imbue it with affect and sensory elements that together constitute links to the various nations of the Caribbean. The West Indian geographies of Brooklyn are thereby brought inside the Caribbean space expanding how geography is conceived of as an analytic. Martinez April 2006 Preface Today, the headlines that once declared our rise to being the largest ethnic minority in the nation have been replaced with headlines proclaiming that the “Sleeping Giant” has awoken. Reactionary immigration policies have prompted diligent action from our communities that have in turn placed millions of people in protest marches across the nation. A new civil rights movement has been born. The work of the New York State Assembly Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force is fueled by such passionate demands for justice and fairness. It is clearly obvious that no wall, no army, no policy will reverse the critical mass that has already been reached with the present growth of the Latino community throughout this nation. Every 2.5 seconds, there is another Latino in the United States; this mostly through births from the children of first generation immigrants. We indeed are the future of this nation. Inclusive, practical and fair policies that embrace our growing communities will lay the groundwork for a prosperous America. Nothing short of this will suffice. This reality should be embraced by policy makers and elected officials across New York State because the growth mentioned above is dynamic especially here in our State. This publication, The Changing Face of the Empire State: Latinos, Portuguese and Brazilians in Upstate New York, clearly outlines the demographic changes impacting New York and briefly highlights some issues that need more government attention, especially if Upstate economies are to grow.
