Acknowledgements This study truly began at the University of Minnesota in Jeani O’Brien’s classroom. Her course in American Indian history was so powerful that it pried me away from a burgeoning music career that I had dreamed about since childhood. She nurtured my intellectual curiosity as I wandered around Minneapolis’s Franklin Street trying to bump into AIM leaders for a senior paper project. I firmly believe that she is responsible for opening my door to graduate study and setting me on a course that I would not have otherwise believed possible. Indeed, when I arrived at the University of Illinois at Chicago as a master’s student I was rough around the edges. This is where Brian Hosmer came in. I like to compare him to a great baseball team manager who has an eye for diamonds in the rough. Like a good baseball manager, he identified something in me worth cultivating, and played an active role in my development. Also, like a good baseball manager making a visit to the mound to check on his pitcher, he knew just when to get me out of a jam, and when to leave me in and allow me to pitch my way out of it. Indeed, I often propped Brian up as a father figure, a positive male role model to fill that void in my life. He is still there any time I need him. Finally I arrived in the steady tutelage of my dissertation advisor, R. Warren Metcalf. I went to the University of Oklahoma specifically to study with him, and he proved to be exactly what I needed in a graduate mentor. His calm, steady guidance often formed a rock that I swam toward when the waters seemed treacherous. He consistently demonstrated a fine sense of both humor and humility, and he always iv believed in my ideas. If I have in some small way lived up to these three primary mentors’ belief in my capacity, then I am satisfied. In addition to the fine mentorship of these three superb individuals, my work often received enthusiastic support from numerous professors who inspired my development as a graduate student. They include Robert Johnston, Corey Capers, Terry Rugeley, Ben Keppel, Sterling Evans, Joshua Piker, Robert Griswold, Robert Rundstrom, Steve Gillon, and David Wrobel. Looking beyond the academic network, and closer to home, my loving family provided me the fortitude to endure this arduous process. My father and mother-in law Chris and Mary von Alt consistently offered love, support, respite, good music, and good food. My stepfather Richard Ratliff has also provided steady love and support throughout this process. My brother Nicholas Miller has for most of my life inspired me with his strength, wisdom, and determination, despite being the younger sibling. My mother, Donna Ratliff, deserves her own section. She has worked tirelessly in support of my endeavors, from a child to a young man to adulthood. She labored long hours and fought to pull my brother and I from a desperate situation, and she succeeded. None of this would have been possible without her love and protection. It has been hard on her to have me pulled away for so long, but each day I carry her legacy and example in a different history that I safeguard in my heart and mind—the one about making sacrifices. While the Bureau of Indian Affairs’ mid- twentieth-century urban relocation program rests at the narrative’s center, I have divorced it from the era’s larger termination policy in order to evaluate it as a distinct historical phenomenon. Rather than emphasize Indian diasporic movement away from reservations merely as a product of BIA machinations, I instead discuss how Native people dictated the terms of relocation while impacting the program’s outcome in profound and unexpected ways. While urbanization undeniably resulted in catastrophe for many Indians, scholars have mostly failed to explore an equally important outcome in which a substantial number of Indians benefitted from urban experiences while gaining important skills to improve their respective tribes’ ability to successfully exercise self- determination and political sovereignty in the modern era. In their collective refusal to be starved and stereotyped into reservation corners, Native people adapted to changing historical currents while nurturing an Indian uplift impulse that stretched back to the reservation period, when the United States federal government seemingly finished a long project of cordoning Indians off from society at large. Warrior, University of Kansas ABSTRACT This project explores how women who live on a southern California reservation of the Kumeyaay Nation experience and respond to violence. Using a structural violence lens (Galtung 1969) enables a wider view of the definition of violence to include anything that limits an individual’s capabilities. Because the project used an inductive research method, the focus widened a study of intimate partner and family violence to the restrictions caused by the reservation itself, the dispute over membership and inclusion, and health issues that cause a decrease in life expectancy. From 2012 to 2018, I visited the reservation to participate in activities and interviewed 19 residents. Through my interactions, I found that women deploy resiliency strategies in support of the traditional meaning of Ipai/Tipai. This Kumeyaay word translates to “the people” to indicate that those who are participating are part of the community. By privileging the participants’ understanding of belonging, I found three levels of strategies, which I named inter-resiliency (within oneself), intra-resiliency (within the family or reservation) and inter-resiliency (within the large community of Kumeyaay or Native Americans across the country), but all levels exist within the strength gained from being part of the Ipai/Tipai.

    The pain experience of traditional Crow Indian by Norma Kay Krumwiede A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Nursing Montana State University © Copyright by Norma Kay Krumwiede (1996) Abstract: The purpose of this qualitative research study was to explore the pain experience of the traditional Crow Indian people. An understanding of the Crow people's experience of pain is crucial in order to provide quality nursing care to members of this population. As nurse researchers gain understanding of these cultural gaps and report their findings, clinically based nurses will be better equipped to serve and meet the unique needs of the traditional Crow Indian. Ethnographic interviews were conducted with 15 traditional Crow Indians currently living on the reservation in southeastern Montana. The informants identified themselves as traditional utilizing Milligan's (1981) typology. Collection of data occurred through (a) spontaneous interviews, (b) observations, (c) written stories, (d) historical landmarks, and (e) field notes. Spradley's (1979) taxonomic analysis method was used to condense the large amount of data into a taxonomy of concepts. The taxonomy of Crow pain evolved into two indigenous categories of “Good Hurt” and “Bad Hurt”. The Crow view “good hurt” as being embedded in natural life events and ceremonies, rituals and healing. The Crow experience "bad hurt” as emanating from two sources: loss and hardship. The Crow believe that every person will experience both “good hurt” and “bad hurt” sometime during their lifetime. The Crow gain knowledge, wisdom and status as they experience, live through, and learn from painful events throughout their lifetime.

    Background The Whirley Crane and Shipyard Number 3 The “Whirley Crane,” so-called because its turret is capable of rotating 360 degrees, was built by Clyde Iron Works of Duluth, Minnesota in 1935. It was first used to build Grand Coulee Dam in Washington state, the second phase of which was done by a consortium of companies led by industrialist Henry J. Kaiser. In 1941, the crane was shipped by barge down the Columbia River and down the coast to Todd California Shipbuilding in Richmond, which later became Shipyard No 1 of Kaiser’s Richmond shipbuilding enterprise. In this location, it and dozens of others like it dominated the skyline of Richmond’s southern waterfront. Crane Facts: Weight: 229,000 pounds Boom length: 110 feet Diameter of turntable assembly: 28 feet Lifting capacity: 166,000 Original cost: $32,000 The use of Whirley Cranes was a major innovation in the mass production of ships. The cranes made it possible to turn huge ship structural pieces around and over during the pre-assembly process so that novice welders could complete relatively simple welding seams parallel to the ground. The cranes were also used in groups – as many as four cranes working together -- to move large pre-assembled parts of a ship into place in the basins so the ship could be fitted together, generally by welding. The result was a previously unimagined rate of production. A total of 747 ships were produced in the Kaiser shipyards in Richmond from 1942-1945. After the war, this crane was acquired by Parr-Richmond Terminal, which later became Levin-Richmond Terminal Corporation.

Smith 2012 Abstract This dissertation consists of a nine month, three-state ethnographic study on the intersectional effects of race, age, gender, and place in the lives of fourteen Black mothers and daughters, ages 15-65, who attempt to analyze and critique the multiple and competing notions of Black womanhood as “at risk” and “in crisis.” Epistemologically, the research is grounded in Black women’s narrative and literacy practices, and fills a gap in the existing literature on Black girlhood and Black women’s lived experiences through attention to the development of mother/daughter relationships, generational narratives, societal discourse, and othermothering. I argue that an in-depth analysis and critique of the dominant “at risk” and “in crisis” discourse is necessary to understand the conversations that are and are not taking place between Black mothers and daughters about race, gender, age, and place; that it is important to understand the ways in which Black girls respond to media portrayals and stereotypes; and that it is imperative that we closely examine the existing narratives at play in the everyday lives of intergenerational Black girls and women in Black communities.

This report examines issues relating to community attitudes; the administration of justice; provisions of health and medical services; alcohol abuse and ,alcoholism; employmept; and economic development on the Navajo Reservation and its real and potential impact On the city of Farmington and San Juan County. From testimony of participants during a three-day open meeting in Farmington and from extensive field investigation, the Advisory Committee has concluded that Native Americans in almost every area suffer from injustice and maltreatment. Recommendations are addressed to local, county, State, and Federal agencies. They include: establishing a human relations committee in Farmington; developing a comprehensive alcohol abuse and alcoholism program; coordination between public and private health facilities to provide adequate services to Navajos; upgrading the community relations program of the Farmington Police Department; affirmative action by private and public employers; and compliance with the "Indian Preference" clause by private employers on the reservations.
