St. Catherine of Roman January 7, 2018—The Epiphany of the Lord ALL ARE WELCOMED TO OUR PARISH! We are so pleased that you chose to celebrate with us this weekend. We warmly invite you to active participation in our liturgical celebration. Please feel free to approach one of our Ministers of Hospitality if you are in need of any assistance. No matter what your present status in the Catholic Church, your current family or marital situation, your past or present religious affiliation; no matter what your personal history, age, background, sexual orientation, gender, race, or color; no matter what your self-image or self-esteem: YOU are invited, welcomed, accepted, loved, and respected at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Ithaca, New York.

TRIVIA NIGHT

This year we will hold our third annual Trivia Night! If you aren’t sure if you will enjoy it, here’s a simple checklist: Do you like people? Does laughter come easily to you? Is it possible you might know the name of a recent president or a famous novel? Does good food and drink appeal to you? If you can answer yes to some or all of these questions, Trivia Night is right up your alley!

Trivia Night is pretty simple. Teams of 6–8 people compete against other teams to answer trivia questions. There will be 8 rounds, each focused on a different category, with 10 questions in each round. Between the rounds, you can enjoy some food and drink, play a few fun raffle games, and enjoy the company of your team and others. This is trivia, so you never know what you might know to help your team.

Trivia Night is our one adults-only event here at St. Catherine’s, open to anyone 16 and older. You don’t have to have a team in order to participate because we will put together teams from those who register alone or in small groups. But you can get your own team together and register as a team if you wish. Invite your local book club, your friends from work, your workout buddies, or your poker group to come. Or invite your prayer group, your pew buddies, or your fellow committee members to form a team. The more the merrier! The cost is only $10 per person to participate, but if you are among the winning teams, you will win a $25, $15, or

$5 gift card. Please bring your own drinks and snacks to share at your table, and we will have coffee and water available. Teams can purchase five mulligans (free answers) for $10, and there will be a few games that you might want to enter into that will cost you $1 each.

Trivia Night will be held on Saturday, January 27, from 7–9 p.m. in Mahler Hall. Doors open at 6:30 so groups can get registered and settled prior to starting. Advance registration is necessary. You can register at https:// tinyurl.com/Trivia1-27-18. The link is also available on the front page of our website. We hope to see you at Trivia Night!

FROM THE BOOK OF JOE

Dear Parish Family, Eight years ago when I first arrived, I had a really great meeting with Sr. Mary O’Brien. She pretty much oriented me to the parish, for which I am forever grateful. She also took me on a tour of the campus, and as we were walking the grounds, she mentioned, “Oh yeah, if you happen to see a homeless-looking guy wandering about, don’t get nervous—it’s just Jerome, our maintenance man.” I did spot Jerome a few days later and introduced myself. He was a very quiet man. He came to work; he did his (very well); you could ask him anything and he would find a way to get it done. He built our and our ambo and our Baptismal font with his own hands. He was a brilliant man; it wasn’t until several months later that I learned how highly educated he was. I would often catch sight of him sitting on the ground behind the old garage reading Sartre or Kant. I immediately became heavily dependent on Jerome. He knew every inch of this campus and how to fix it, and if he couldn’t fix it he knew the people who could. In time, I also considered him a friend. Therefore, it is with a very heavy heart that I inform you of his death. I know that he would do anything for this community, and I know how much this community loved him. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no service for Jerome; however, I will be offering a memorial Mass for him in the spring. As you know, we have dedicated our enclosed walkway to his memory. When we receive the plaque, we will formally dedicate a space to him that will never have to be shoveled again. It saddens me greatly that my friend Jerome no longer walks with us on this planet, but we have gained our very own St. Jerome. Until we see each other again, my friend, rest in peace. Peace,
