ST. CATHERINE OF ROMAN November 6, 2016—32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

ALL ARE WELCOMED TO OUR PARISH! We are so pleased that you chose to celebrate with us this weekend. We warmly invite you to active participation in our liturgical celebration. Please feel free to approach one of our Ministers of Hospitality if you are in need of any assistance. No matter what your present status in the Catholic Church, your current family or marital situation, your past or present religious affiliation; no matter what your personal history, age, background, sexual orientation, gender, race, or color; no matter what your self-image or self-esteem: YOU are invited, welcomed, accepted, loved, and respected at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Ithaca, New York.

During November, we will spend time at each of our liturgies exploring vocations: religious orders, the priesthood and deaconate, lay apostolates and lay ministry, and marriage. We hope that these presentations will help us all to support vocational awareness and to consider more deeply what wants of us. Let us pray for those discerning their vocations. THE VOCATION OF MARRIAGE A vocation is the committed of life that calls us to. We may be called to be married, to be single, to become a priest or deacon, or to be a member of a religious community. All of these vocational choices are ways in which we serve God and one another. Two of these choices, married life and the priesthood or deaconate, are also sacraments in the Church. What does the Church teach about sacramental marriage? Within marriage, the couple’s relationship uniquely expresses the unbreakable bond of love between Christ and his people. God’s love becomes present to the spouses in their total union and also flows through them to their family and community. By their permanent, faithful, and exclusive giving to each other, the couple reveals something of God’s unconditional love. The sacrament of marriage involves the couple’s entire life as they journey together and become more able to give to and receive from each other. Catholic teaching holds that sacraments bring grace to those who receive them. Marriage gives a husband and wife the grace to love each other as Christ loves the Church; it strengthens their unity, making them a sign of God’s love in the world, and helps them perfect their holiness on their journey to eternal life. Do marriages really do all of this? Well, yes and no. Yes, sacramental marriages are a sign of God’s love in the world. They do serve to help both individuals to live more generously, and that extends beyond their family and into the world. Yes, married couples do help each other, and their children, to “perfect their holiness.” But perhaps not every day and in every situation. Upon the celebration of his 50th wedding anniversary, a man once said: “We are celebrating 45 years of wedded bliss.” Most couples have moments, days, weeks, or sometimes years that are particularly hard—when the commitment to love one another is just more difficult than they thought. But God’s grace continues to be poured out to couples, and the challenges of marriage are also diminished by the love that is shared, that grows, and that changes with each passing year. Two of our parishioners, Jane and Jeff Doyle, will be sharing with us about the sacrament of marriage next weekend during our liturgies. We look forward to hearing their reflection on this sacrament and on their vocation as married persons.

From the Book of Ann Marie Dear Parish Family, Last weekend at the Sunday Masses, Fr. Joe started his homily by acknowledging that there is a great feeling of anxiety that seems to be permeating our culture because of the current election cycle. He invited us to breathe deeply, vote our conscience, and then trust in God. This is really good advice, and I wanted to echo it for those who didn’t hear it. That being said, I also wanted to say a few things about this election. Fr. Joe mentioned that you should vote your conscience, and a well-formed conscience should be informed by the teachings of the Church. Each year the United States Catholic Bishops put out a guide called “Faithful Citizenship” (http://www.usccb.org/issues -and-action/faithful-citizenship/) that is intended to give Catholics a lens through which to view the election. This is a good guide, and because it comes from the Bishops, it is the teaching of the Church. On the website link you will also find podcasts and other ways of entering into this teaching. One of the best (easy) resources I found was from the website Busted Halo, called Voting Catholic. It is a great summary of the Faithful Citizenship document (http://bustedhalo.com/video/watch-voting-catholic). I encourage you to check out these resources if you are looking for help in making your choices. They are reputable and speak of the fullness of the concerns we should have as Catholic voters. A few parishioners have been in touch with Fr. Joe and me about other resources that they have found or been given that seem to speak with great authority about how you should vote as a Catholic, but they are not official teaching. Catholics aren’t single-issue voters, nor are they voters of only one political party. Anyone who tells you otherwise may be trying to use the Church for their own political goals or influence your vote unfairly. On another note related to the election, I want to encourage you (and I am encouraging myself) to pay attention to the rest of the ballot. There is this great scene in the show The West Wing (of which I am a huge fan) where President Bartlett is obsessed with a guy running for the school board in his hometown in New Hampshire. Everyone is trying to encourage the President to pay attention to the midterm elections, and all he seems to care about is this one little race for a local school board. I end up thinking about that scene as I am driving around town and see all these signs for people I don’t know who are running for jobs I don’t really understand. So I am trying to catch up and figure it all out, because it really is the state and local elections that make the most difference in our daily lives. Who we elect to these positions will affect our taxes, what is allowable in our neighborhoods, what is taught in our schools, how we treat those in trouble with the law, and other very tangible things. So those are my two pieces of voting advice—use good resources to understand what the Church has to say about this (and every) election, and pay attention to those who are running for political positions locally and state-wide. But mostly, I encourage you to vote, and then, as Fr. Joe suggested, to trust that God is with us. As we (finally) get to move beyond this election cycle, I also hope that all of us will do what we can to bring our nation together and to demand some changes to the election cycle so that the next presidential election cycle doesn’t begin two years in advance of 2020 as this one did. There has to be a better way, right? Peace,

P.S. If you need information about who will be on your ballot, go to www.vote411.org. This site will have the national and state elections on it. It is created by the League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan group.
