Joining an increasing body of recent meaningful scholarship that has been making significant progress to recover many overlooked and peripheral female voices of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, this work serves to fully assert Catherine as a writer of work that is literarily significant and worthy of textual analysis alongside contemporary male Italian authors, many of whom also wrote on religious matters and spirituality. The current project firmly casts Catherine of Siena as a literary figure through utilizing a gender theory framework and exploring her body of work alongside contemporary poetry, through network analysis of her community-driven writing and spiritual activism, and via the reception of her texts in England. Theoretically situating Catherine the mystic as a liminal figure, Chapter I argues that the space Catherine inhabits is queer in multiple ways: between male and female, virgin and sexual, human and godlike, earthly and divine. Chapter II investigates the iv literary exchange that took place between poetic and mystical writing, concluding that the influence is not merely one-directional, but that the two genres serve to influence each other. Leveraging data visualization and network analysis, Chapter III discusses the textual state and history of Catherine’s letters, investigating the contemporary literary network that Catherine formed around herself through the transmission of her writing. Chapter IV analyzes the metaphors and images of Catherine’s letters, examining the pragmatic financial language she utilized in writing to secular and religious interlocutors, and the powerful corporeal language she used in letters written to fellow mantellate. Chapter V explores the history of the book in terms of the transposition and reception of Catherinian texts, especially the Dialogo, which was written in Italian for a lay audience, translated into Latin for a professional religious audience, then translated into English for a communal female religious audience. This dissertation views Catherine’s authorship as that which is embedded within a community-based network and political and public life, presenting her as a truly singular instance of a 14th-century figure who was active in both deed and word, and whose literary voice resonated across European vernacular languages and through the medieval and early modern periods. This work firmly asserts Catherine of Siena, in her own right, as among the early innovators of the Italian literary tradition, providing opportunities for future humanistic inquiry into Catherine’s texts. v Acknowledgements One of the things I do, when I step up on a stage … I bring everyone who has ever been kind to me with me — ... Bishop Paul Bird CSsR, presided over the consecration and blessed the facilities, together with ACU Campus Chaplain, Fr James Kerr and ACU Director of Identity and Mission, Fr Anthony Casamento CSMA. The Catherine of Siena Centre reflects both our rich past and exciting future. The Centre is a combination of four heritage houses, which still have their original frontages facing Ripon Street in order to keep in character with the neighbourhood and there is a very modern façade fronting the Campus. Morton Dunn Architects are responsible for the innovative design and the works were carried out by Page Constructions. The end result is an extremely functional space for the Schools of Education, Arts and Theology and Philosophy. The building is named after St Catherine of Siena, a teacher in the Dominican Order and a Scholastic philosopher and theologian. It is also named after Sister Catherine of Siena, a Sister of Mercy in Ballarat. The naming of this Centre represents both Catherine of Siena and Sister Catherine of Siena and the Mercy tradition over Fr James Kerr, Bishop Paul Bird CSsR and Fr Anthony Casamento one hundred years. In regards to the fairy tales, the examination focuses solely on the lesser-known stories, due to the large amounts of scholarship surrounding the “popular” tales. The continuity of interpretation of these three major colors (black, white, and red) establishes the link between the past and the present and demonstrates the influence of older myths and beliefs on modern understandings of the colors.

Our mission is to ensure that students across California high schools have meaningful opportunities to engage with the vast, diverse, and rich histories of people of color; and thus, we are in deep support of AB101 which will require high schools to provide ethnic studies starting in academic year 2025-26 and students to take at least one semester of an A-G approved ethnic studies course to graduate starting in 2029-30. Our original petition made in support of AB331, linked here, was signed by over 26,000 CA students and adult allies in support of passing Ethnic Studies. We know AB101 has the capacity to have an immense positive impact on student education, but also on student lives as a whole. For many students, our communities continue to be systematically excluded from narratives presented to us in our classrooms. By passing AB101, we can change the precedent of exclusion and allow millions of students to learn the histories of their peoples.

    A paper presented at the Pacific Rim Real Estate Conference, Melbourne, January 2005 A Christian Understanding of Property: Spiritual themes underlying Western property Garrick Small, PhD University of Technology, Sydney [email protected] Abstract: Interest in customary title has raised awareness of the cultural dependence of property and its relationship to spirituality. Western culture has a historical connection with Christian spirituality, yet its property institution is seldom related to it. Property is found within Christian thought from the very beginning of the Old Testament and shares several important commonalities with customary peoples. The notion of property is evident in the gospels along with repeated comments on the correct application of riches. Early Christianity can be viewed as a development of the Old Testament property institution consistent with other aspects of Christian moral thought. Changes in the institution of property through the Christian era can be seen to parallel changes in Christian thought eventually leading to present day property. Overall, property can be linked to the spiritual roots of Western culture in a manner that has the capacity to inform the development of dialogue with customary peoples in their endeavours to assert the validity of their property conventions. Keywords: property theory, customary title, moral theology, social economics, property and culture Introduction The current institution of property was initiated in the sixteenth century as the former conditional notion of private property was replaced by absolute property (Anderson 1979). That century also saw radical changes in other human institutions. Modernity began with Machiavelli’s (d.1527) option to replace classical realism with empiricism in political science1 (Machiavelli and Mansfield 1985).
