The Ascension of the Lord May 12, 2013 Page 3 LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR

FOR CHRIST FOREVER VISITATIONS

Each Parish Church in my pilgrimage brings home the Story of in a dif- ferent was. On April 26th at midday, I visited Church in Stan- ton. Polycarp was Bishop of Smyrna during the 2nd Century. He died a martyr in 155 by being burned at the stake. He prayed:

Father I bless you that you have deemed me worthy of this day and hour, That I may take a portion of the Martyrs in the Cup of Christ. Among these may I be welcome among Thy Face as a rich and acceptable sacrifice.

Here in Stanton on Chapman Avenue in the Diocese of Orange, the parking lot is under reconstruction and the earth is laid bare. The doors are open at the noon hour. There is a silent invitation to come in and rest awhile. The dis- tance both in time and space between here and ancient Smyrna seems to be infinite. I hear the words which Polycarp spoke about : “Eighty years have I served Him and He never did me any injury.” While I am 10 years his younger I feel that we are kin. The distance now is gone and the beauty of God is ever ancient and ever new.

Beginning on July 1st my place of residence will be in Fullerton. The deck overlooks Associated Road and is close to the entrance of California University. I am concerned that I will no longer live on “sacred ground”. When left the monastic enclosure for the first time he ex- pressed a similar concern until he stood on a street corner.

In Louisville, at the corner of Fourth and Walnut, in the center of the shopping district, I was suddenly overwhelmed with the realization that I loved all these people, that they were mine and I was theirs, that they could not be alien to one another even though they were total strangers. It was like waking from a dream of separateness... Then it was as if I suddenly saw the secret beauty of their hearts where neither sin nor desire nor self-knowledge can reach, the core of their reality, the person that each one is in God’s eyes. Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander

Prayer to Mary – The Memorare

Remember, O most loving Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, we turn to you, O Virgin of virgins, our Mother. To you we come, before you we stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, do not despise our petitions, but in your mercy hear us and answer us. Amen

The Ascension of the Lord May 12, 2013 Page 7 For Christ Forever St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church Campaign Newsletter DIOCESE OF ORANGE May 11th & 12th, 2013 Volume 6

Our For Christ Forever Campaign Commitment Weekend takes place this weekend here at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. Please consider your pledge to the campaign today. If you have not had an opportuni- ty to make your pledge, please complete one of the pledge envelopes available in the pews and place it in today’s collecƟon. Why is Pledging Vital? A pledge allows you to make a conƟnuous sacrifice that adds up to a significant contribuƟon over a period of Ɵme. A pledge makes payments less of a burden than a one-Ɵme giŌ. A pledge gives the parish and Diocese an accurate esƟmate for future planning.

Your pledge is a statement of your intent to give to the best of your ability. The Bishop and our Reverend Eamon O’Gorman know that when you make your pledge, you will do your best to fulfill it. A 10% down pay- ment is encouraged but not necessary.

How do I make my GiŌ?

To assist you in making your decision, Suggested GiŌ Plans are presented below. Keep in mind that while no pledge is too small or too large, it should have some relaƟonship to how generous God has been to you and your family. SUGGESTED GIFT PLANS

RCIA News If you attended Mass last Sunday, you were present to hear the “witness talk” of our newly ini- tiated, Natasha Spadea-Anello at the 9am mass and our Neophyte, Glory Curtis at the 11am Mass. What did you hear, what did you see? What might you have felt as you listened to their testimony? They each related their experience of moving through the RCIA process and the grace received through the sacraments.

You have all been a part of and witness to their authentic transformation. You have prayed and supported these three young women through these months of teaching and nurturing.

What a gift to see and hear the presence of the Holy Spirit so authentically articulated in their experiences. What a blessing to be witness to the work of the Spirit. We thank you for your presence and prayers for them. Amen.

Blessings, Donna Beam, RCIA Director
