New Camaldoli Hermitage SPRING 2017 CONTEMPLATION IN ACTION “The mysticism of compassion does not aim at a blind experience of God that is devoted exclusively to one’s own interiority, but to the disruptive experience that occurs when dealing with others, in the dynamics of interpersonal encounters, face to face. Emmanuel A Time of Need and Gratitude Wasinger, OSB Cam As many of you know by now, the central coast of California was walloped by an atmospheric river of rain this winter, which destroyed sections of Highway 1 and badly damaged our own entrance road. Our property is right in the middle of the most fragile part of the coast, and the worst damage to Highway 1, called Paul’s Slide, was just south of our own entry road.

  • Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018
Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

  • Opening and Blessings at Acu
OPENING AND BLESSINGS AT ACU Australian Catholic University (ACU) recently consecrated the new St Thomas Aquinas Chapel and blessed the Catherine of Siena Centre on the Ballarat Campus. Bishop Paul Bird CSsR, presided over the consecration and blessed the facilities, together with ACU Campus Chaplain, Fr James Kerr and ACU Director of Identity and Mission, Fr Anthony Casamento CSMA. The Catherine of Siena Centre reflects both our rich past and exciting future. The Centre is a combination of four heritage houses, which still have their original frontages facing Ripon Street in order to keep in character with the neighbourhood and there is a very modern façade fronting the Campus. Morton Dunn Architects are responsible for the innovative design and the works were carried out by Page Constructions. The end result is an extremely functional space for the Schools of Education, Arts and Theology and Philosophy. The building is named after St Catherine of Siena, a teacher in the Dominican Order and a Scholastic philosopher and theologian. It is also named after Sister Catherine of Siena, a Sister of Mercy in Ballarat. The naming of this Centre represents both Catherine of Siena and Sister Catherine of Siena and the Mercy tradition over Fr James Kerr, Bishop Paul Bird CSsR and Fr Anthony Casamento one hundred years. CSMA. Photograph supplied by Ian Wilson Photography. Over the past twelve months the St Thomas of Aquinas Chapel at the Ballarat Campus has also undergone a major transformation. Central to the improvements are high, stained-glass windows that create a stunning effect by activating the space with coloured light throughout the day.

  • ASPECTS of Tile MONASTIC PATRONAGE of Tile ENGLISH
ASPECTS OF TIlE MONASTIC PATRONAGE OF TIlE ENGLISH AND FRENCH ROYAL HOUSES, c. 1130-1270 by Elizabeth M. Hallani VC i% % Thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, in History presented at the University of London. 1976. / •1 ii SUMMARY This study takes as its theme the relationship of the English and French kings and the religious orders, £.1130-1270, Patronage in general is a field relatively neglected in the rich literature on the monastic life, and royal patronage has never before been traced over a broad period for both France and England. The chief concern here is with royal favour shown towards the various orders of monks and friars, in the foundations and donations made by the kings. This is put in the context of monastic patronage set in a wider field, and of the charters and pensions which are part of its formaL expression. The monastic foundations and the general pattern of royal donations to different orders are discussed in some detail in the core of the work; the material is divided roughly according to the reigns of the kings. Evidence from chronicles and the physical remains of buildings is drawn upon as well as collections of charters and royal financial documents. The personalities and attitudes of the monarchs towards the religious hierarchy, the way in which monastic patronage reflects their political interests, and the contrasts between English and French patterns of patronage are all analysed, and the development of the royal monastic mausoleum in Western Europe is discussed as a special case of monastic patronage. A comparison is attempted of royal and non-royal foundations based on a statistical analysis.

Can our lan- guishing love be transformed into radical eros—a deep yearning that knows only the language of intimate com- munion, the song of the Bridegroom and his Bride? he language of the Song of Songs—so replete with sexual imagery and not so subtle innuendos that it leaves modern readers struggling Twith the text’s value (much less its status as Scripture)—proved theo- logically rich for the patristic and medieval interpreters of the book. Rather than avoiding the difficult imagery present in the Song, they deemed it to be suggestive for a spiritual reading of the biblical text. In the Middle Ages, more “commentaries” were written on the Song of Songs than any other book in the Old Testament. Some thirty works were completed on the Song in the twelfth century alone.1 This tells us some- thing about the medieval method of exegesis. Following the lead of earlier interpreters, the medieval exegetes believed the Bible had spiritual mean- ing as well as a literal meaning. From this they developed a method of in- terpretation to uncover the “fourfold meaning of Scripture”: the literal, the allegorical, the moral, and the mystical.2 Medieval interpreters pressed be- yond the literal meaning to discover additional levels of meaning. A MONASTIC APPROACH Before we look at how three great mystics in the Christian tradition— Bernard of Clairvaux, Teresa of Avila, and John of the Cross—made use of the Song, let’s consider a larger issue: Why did the Song generate such per- sonally intense reflections in the works of the mystics? The form and focus of “monastic commentaries” in the medieval period was well suited for a spiritual reading of the Song.

The Holy See ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI TO STUDENTS AND STAFF OF THE VENERABLE ENGLISH COLLEGE Monday, 3 December 2012 Your Eminence, dear Brother Bishops, Monsignor Hudson, Students and Staff of the Venerable English College, It gives me great pleasure to welcome you today to the Apostolic Palace, the House of Peter. I greet my Venerable brother, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, a former Rector of the College, and I thank Archbishop Vincent Nichols for his kind words, spoken on behalf of all present. I too look back with great thanksgiving in my heart to the days that I spent in your country in September 2010. Indeed, I was pleased to see some of you at Oscott College on that occasion, and I pray that the Lord will continue to call forth many saintly vocations to the priesthood and the religious life from your homeland. Through God’s grace, the Catholic community of England and Wales is blessed with a long tradition of zeal for the faith and loyalty to the Apostolic See. At much the same time as your Saxon forebears were building the Schola Saxonum, establishing a presence in Rome close to the tomb of Peter, Saint Boniface was at work evangelizing the peoples of Germany. So as a former priest and Archbishop of the See of Munich and Freising, which owes its foundation to that great English missionary, I am conscious that my spiritual ancestry is linked with yours. Earlier still, of course, my predecessor Pope Gregory the Great was moved to send Augustine of Canterbury to your shores, to plant the seeds of Christian faith on Anglo-Saxon soil.

Burton’s words invoke the gallery of maps Pope Alexander VII assembled in Castel Gandolfo outside Rome in 1665 and animate Sutton Nicholls’s ink-and-wash drawing of Samuel Pepys’s library in London in 1693 (Fig. 1).2 There, in a room lined with bookcases and portraits, a map stands out, mounted on canvas and sus- pended from two cords; it is Giovanni Battista Falda’s view of Rome, published in 1676.
