St. Polycarp was martyred around 155, and the account of his sufferings dates back to that time. The narrator informs us that in his final prayers before giving up his life for Christ, St. Polycarp "remembered all who had met with Third Sunday in Lent– March 24, 2109 him at any time, both small and great, both those with and THE CHURCH IS CATHOLIC those without renown, and the whole Catholic Church throughout the world.” We know that St. Polycarp, at the time For the last three weeks you have read reflections on three of his death in 155, had been a Christian for 86 years. The name had caught on, and no doubt each other, indicate essential features of the Church and her for good reasons. The term "catholic" simply means "universal," mission. The Church does not possess them of herself: it is and when employing it in those early days, Sts. “Amen I say to thee, this day you shall be

with me in paradise.” – Luke 23: 43 When I consider the scene at Golgatha, the chaos and com- motion that must have been present that day, and at that time when there were so many who already deeply believed that the Messiah was being executed, I try to fathom the magnitude of how, amongst all of that chaos, this simple interaction between these three dying men would impact the world so greatly. And, in many ways, I believe this moment in time was the genesis of what we often see now as the common action movie scene; where bombs are exploding, debris flying all around, and among all of the chaos is the critical moment of clarity and in that moment, the world has reason to believe again; for it is at that moment that the underdog has—Hope! Hope and Faith! I read this line from the Bible and think about that time and place, I cannot help but think of the Message of Hope and Faith that it truly is. It highlights Hope and Faith for one individual, dying side-by-side with Son of Man whose faith was demonstrated and his belief in the Lord confirmed. It gives one Hope for the other criminal who taunted and jeered at Jesus… that through the words of the one believer, you hope his heart may have turned; that he may have felt sorrow and remorse for his actions at that last moment and that he too may be saved. With the image of these three men side by side, one taunting God, the other denouncing the first and begging God for forgiveness, and the third Man, God, speaking selflessly all while committing the most selfless act he could offer through his execution and death, giving of himself not only for this man but for all of the world; with that image in mind, I cannot help but simultaneously envision the cartoon illustration of the “Good Angel” on one shoulder, the “Bad Angel” on the other shoulder and the child in the middle being tempted! And, oddly enough, I believe this image is quite appropriate… the bad angel, the criminal on the left, the good angel, the criminal on the right, and the boy in the middle…God the Son! The Son, who had the choice to be selfish, who had the choice to succumb to His worldly instincts, but who through His faith in God the Father, the Child knew the right choice and made the right choice. We are too often faced with making the right or wrong choice. We know the right choice. But we don’t always listen to the good angel, do we? Sometimes we listen to the bad angel but, hopefully, all too soon, do we realize our error. And then we have hope! We have hope because we remember our faith. We have hope that God will re- enter our heart and soul, and give us guidance. We have hope and faith that God will help strengthen us so that we can do better. For we too, have faith, and hope that someday, we will be with Him in paradise! —by Carlos M. Melendez IGNITE FORMED MINI-SERIES Second Sunday of Lent, March 17, 2019 Fr.
