8 Beloved who were also veterans Looking at these remarkable men and women, we can see it takes courage to be a soldier — and a . By: Cerith Gardiner With Veterans Day upon us, we have an opportune moment to reflect on some remarkable holy men and women who not only picked up their sword to serve their country, but who often did so for a higher purpose: their Christian faith. Some of these saints felt impelled to sign up to military service after receiving spiritual visions, while others joined the forces to help spread the Word of God. Most, however, found their spiritual calling during, or after, their years as a soldier. Nonetheless, the lives of these eight saints reveal that the courage they displayed as soldiers would prepare them for the persecution and various challenges they would later face as . St. : The French heroine went into battle against the English after receiving visions from three saints, including Archangel . After a resounding victory, she was later captured by English allies in and eventually burned at the stake at the age of 19. St. Francis of Assisi: In his youth, the founder of the Franciscan Order served a couple of fighting in the army, and was even held captive for a year. Eventually he reevaluated his life, losing the taste for his past lifestyle, and decided to answer a higher calling from God. St. Thomas Becket: The English cleric fought the French on behalf of King Henry II, along with hundreds of his own men by his side. Donning the regular soldier’s armor, he even engaged in single combat. Once he became Archbishop of Canterbury, he broke with Henry over the State’s power, and was eventually murdered while praying. St. George: As imperial guard for the Roman Emporer , George disobeyed the ruler’s demands to worship Roman gods. Not only did he profess his own faith, he converted other soldiers, for which he was tortured and executed. St. Maurice: As a Christian leader of over 1,000 men in the Theban legion, Maurice encouraged his men to disobey orders from Emporer Maximian to harass Christians. After a decimation, where 1 in 10 of his soldiers were executed, he and his men continued to ignore the orders and eventually his whole legion was executed. St. Ignatius of Loyola: The Spanish Catholic priest began a career in the army at age 17 looking for glory. When he was 30, after being injured in a battle, he began to read and reflect on his life purpose and who God is, deciding to join the priesthood. He founded the Society of Jesus in 1540. St. Sebastian: The early Roman Christian joined the Praetorian Guards under Emporer Diocletion to aid fellow Christians. As a captain, he converted many prominent figures but was finally discovered and shot full of arrows. Miraculously he survived and went to confront the emporer, who had him clubbed to death. St. Martin of Tours: Growing up in 4th-century Rome, Martin decided at the age of 10 to become a Christian. A few years after joining the army he became a , refusing to fight, and offered to go into battle unarmed. Released from the army, he started his religious journey to become a , then saint. At times Heaven can appear to be something abstract, a place in the 100% clouds where God dwells. In reality Heaven is much different, full 90% of people, many of whom held a special place in our hearts on earth. 80% St. Cyprian, a bishop in the 3rd century, wrote about one of the 70% reasons we should long for Heaven. 60% 50% There a large number of dear ones are waiting for us, of parents, Goal: $87,385 brothers, children; a numerous and full crowd are longing for us; Paid: $40,377 40% already secure of their own immortality, and still anxious for our 30% safety. To come to the sight and the embrace of these, how great will Balance Due: $47,008 20% be the mutual joy to them and to us! What a pleasure of the kingdom of heaven is there without the fear of dying, and with an eternity of 10% living! How consummate and never-ending a happiness!

There is the glorious company of the apostles; there is the assembly of exulting prophets; there is the unnumbered family of crowned for the victory of their struggles and suffering; there are virgins triumphing, who, by the power of chastity, have subdued the lusts of the flesh and the body; there are the merciful recompensed, who with food and bounty to the poor have done the works of righteousness, who keeping the Lord’s commands have transferred their earthly inheritance into heavenly treasures.

To these, O most dearly beloved brethren, let us hasten with most eager longing; let us desire that our lot may be to be with these speedily; to come speedily to Christ.

Think about that scene for a minute. What joy would you experience to hug a spouse or child again? What if you saw your best friend, or your parents? Would you run at full speed to embrace them?

Let those thoughts stir up within you a great longing for Heaven, one that informs your daily activities. If we want to see that scene one day, should we not do all that we can during our short life to make it a reality?

May we go forward each day with this in mind, living the Gospel in every aspect so that we can one day hug our loved ones tightly, for all eternity.
