NHỮNG SỰ KIỆN LIÊN QUAN ĐẾN LA VANG

Thánh Đường tranh đầu tiên Năm 1801, Nguyễn Ánh phục quốc đánh bại nhà Tây Sơn, chấm dứt bắt đạo. Giáo Dân hồi hương về làng cũ. La Vang trở lại cảnh rừng thiêng hoang dã, ít người lui tới ngoại trừ những nông phu đi làm rẫy. Những người này thường hay đến van vái tại gốc cây đa cổ thụ, nơi tương truyền có bà linh thiêng hiện ra. Vì cho rằng đó không phải là Đức Bà của người Công Giáo mà chỉ là bà tiên, bà thánh giáng phàm, nên họ đã đắp lên một nền thờ vọng và rào sơ tứ phía, như có câu thơ sau:“Bên lương chức dịch nhộn nhàng - Đắp nền thờ vọng rào hàng sơ li.” Khoảng năm 1820, dưới thời Minh Mạng, lương dân ba làng Thạch Hãn, Cổ Thành và Ba Trừ đã chung nhau dựng một ngôi chùa tranh trên nền thờ vọng ấy. Nhưng các vị chức sắc cả ba làng nhận ra có điềm ứng đây là nơi ngự của Đức Bà bên đạo, họ liền đồng thuận nhượng cúng ngôi chùa cho người Công Giáo. Và điều này cũng được ghi lại qua truyền tụng: “Cùng nhau bàn bạc rộn ràng - Chùa này để cúng về đàng đạo nhơn.” Ngôi chùa tranh sau đó đã được sửa đổi thành ngôi Thánh Đường tranh. Đó là ngôi Thánh Đường tranh đầu tiên tại La Vang. Ngôi Thánh Đường này tồn tại khoảng chừng 29 năm (1833-1862) và đã bị phá hủy cùng chung số phận với tất cả những ngôi Thánh Đường trên toàn lãnh thổ Việt Nam do lệnh bắt đạo. Lễ Toàn Thiêu trên nền Thánh Đường bị đốt Sau hòa ước Nhâm Tuất 1862, vua Tự Đức ban hành chỉ dụ tha tháp, việc đạo được bình yên, nhiều cuộc hành hương băng rừng vượt núi vào La Vang kính viếng Đức Mẹ đã được giáo xứ Cổ Vưu tổ chức. Những cuộc hành hương như thế diễn ra hằng năm và số Giáo Dân tham dự càng lúc càng đông biến cuộc hành hương La Vang cấp Giáo Xứ (Cổ Vưu) thành Giáo Hạt (Dinh Cát). Một ngôi Thánh Đường tranh khác được dựng trên nền cũ. Khoảng 20 năm sau, ngôi Thánh Đường này đã bị đốt khi nhóm Văn Thân cực đoan thảm sát Giáo Phận Huế năm 1885. Sau khi thiêu sát họ Cổ Vưu vào ngày 7 tháng 9 năm 1885, hôm sau, quân Văn Thân kéo nhau vào La Vang. Trước cảnh vườn không nhà trống vì Giáo Dân đã hoảng sợ chạy lên núi, chúng bèn vơ vét của cải, đốt nhà cửa, bắt trâu bò, chỉ chừa lại ngôi Thánh Đường tranh vì nghe tiếng Đức Bà linh thiêng không dám đốt. Nhưng trưa ngày 9 tháng 9 năm 1885, một người ở làng Phú Long, xóm Bốc, tên là Thơ, con ông Mẹo đến La Vang với ý định hôi của. Vì thấy tất cả nhà cửa người Công Giáo nơi đây đã thành đống tro tàn chẳng còn gì để kiếm chác, chỉ còn lại ngôi Thánh Đường tranh vẫn đứng yên, hắn châm lửa đốt luôn. Thấy La Vang có lửa cháy, nghi có chuyện gì chăng, nhóm Văn Thân đã trở lại La Vang. Khi biết Thơ đã làm một việc mà họ không dám làm: đốt Nhà Thờ La Vang! Họ kéo nhau tới nhà ông Mẹo chửi bới rồi phóng hỏa đốt cả nhà trên nhà dưới, thiêu chết ông Mẹo, Thơ và vợ con. Trong số những Giáo Dân Cổ Vưu trốn lên La Vang lánh nạn. Tưởng rằng tình thế đã bình yên nên nhiều người trong họ đã quay trở về nhà mình. Không ngờ, một vài nơi dư đảng Văn Thân vẫn còn say máu, lẩn quẩn quanh khu vực La Vang, họ đã bắt được một nhóm 30 Giáo Dân Cổ Vưu khi vừa rời khỏi bìa rừng. Ông Thoàn xin cho cả nhóm được chết trên nền Thánh Đường La Vang vừa bị đốt. Họ đã trói ông và 29 Giáo Dân lại thành chùm rồi chất củi hỏa thiêu. Thánh Đường tranh thứ ba Sau thảm họa Văn Thân tình hình Dinh Cát trở lại bình yên. Giáo Dân La Vang đã khởi công dựng lại ngôi thánh đường tranh nhỏ bé trên nền hoang, để sớm hôm có bóng Mẹ từ bi. Và ngôi thánh đường tranh La Vang thứ ba được dựng lên lưu dấu nơi Đức Mẹ đã đứng khi hiện ra. Trong Báo Cáo Năm 1894 linh mục Patinier Kinh, cha sở Cổ Vưu kiêm quản hạt Quảng Trị cho biết: “Năm 1885 ngôi Nhà Thờ ở đây cũng như những Nhà Thờ khác trong hạt, không thoát khỏi thảm họa... Khi hoà bình vừa vãn hồi, con đã cấp tốc dựng lại ngôi Nhà Thờ nhỏ bé, tạm bợ để chờ nguồn kinh phí cũng như để chờ cho tình hình bớt nhiễu nhương...” Cũng theo Linh Mục Patinier Kinh, ngôi Thánh Đường được tạo dựng năm 1894, trở thành ngôi Thánh Đường tranh La Vang thứ ba và tồn tại khoảng 9 năm, từ cuối năm 1885 đến năm 1894.

THỜI KỲ PHÁT TRIỂN (1894-1960) Ngôi Thánh Đường ngói Năm 1885 khi tiếng đồn Đức Mẹ La Vang đã ban nhiều ơn lành hồn xác vượt địa phân Huế, Đức Giám Mục Caspar Lộc quyết định cho xây dựng tại La Vang một ngôi thánh đường bằng ngói. Mọi vật liệu cần thiết đã được chuẩn bị, và dự định sẽ khởi công vào năm 1886, nhưng do nạn Văn Thân nên hoãn lại mãi đến 1894 mới được thực hiện. Thánh đường cũng đã được Đức Giám Mục Caspar Lộc làm phép và khánh thành vào dịp Đại Hội La Vang lần thứ nhất, ngày 8 tháng 8 năm 1901, 14 với tước hiệu Đức Bà Phù Hộ Các Giáo Hữu. Nơi chính diện mặt tiền, phía trên cửa ra vào in nổi năm chữ nôm.

ĐỀN THỜ ĐỨC MẸ LA VANG Ngôi thánh đường này tồn tại được 25 năm (1900 - 1925), dấu chứng còn lại là bức tranh “Thánh Đường La Vang” do một họa sĩ ngoại giáo tài hoa, Nguyễn Khắc Nhân vẽ. Bức ảnh vẫn còn lưu truyền hình ảnh ngôi thánh đường ngói cho đến ngày nay. (còn tiếp...)
