Committee for the Poor St. Turibius School is located in the heart of the garment district in downtown Los Angeles. It is a mission school of St. Joseph parish. One hundred percent of their students qualify for free and reduced price lunches which means they meet the School income eligibility guidelines. In essence, these families are living at or below the poverty line which is defined as $11,000 or less per each adult family member in the household. St. Turibius’ parents literally sacrifice everything they have to send their children to a Catholic school. These parents sometimes go without meals so their children are fed, clothed, housed and have a Catholic education. Although the School is lacking in financial resources, it is rich in spirit, faith and commitment to providing the best Catholic education possible to all of its students. th Until September 15 , the Committee for the Poor will be collecting school supplies in particular the following are especially needed: Single-subject notebooks, College-ruled lined paper, Wide-ruled lined paper, Kinder writing paper, Individual Student whiteboards, Copy paper, Index cards, Post-its, Pencils, Mechanical pencils .07, Pencil lead, Glue sticks, Kleenex, Clorox wipes. Books - Class sets (30): - Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan - Wonder by R.J. Palacio - The House On Mango Street by Sandra Cisnero - The Giver by Lois Lowry - A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park Lastly, St. Turibius received a grant from the Archdiocese that will be providing them with 140 ipads to support student learning (they used to only have 30 for the whole school)! The grant asks that they purchase ipad covers for each device in order to ensure the devices are well protected and last several years. They would greatly appreciate the support in helping them purchase the needed covers for the devices they will be receiving. Fingerprinting and Virtus Training Session for ALL Volunteers

St. Martin of Tours will have fingerprinting available on Monday, September 24, 2018 in Room 1 beginning at 12:00 noon. Please contact Michelle Berlin at [email protected] for an appointment.

We will also be conducting a Virtus “Protecting God’s Children” adult training session on Monday, September 24, 2018 from 6:30-9:30pm in the Parish Center.

Concurrent with any activities in a parish or school, ALL parish and school volunteers who work in any capacity with or around children are required to be fingerprinted and to participate in the Virtus program. This includes parent helpers in the library, hot lunch, field trips etc. and parish volunteers as lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, ushers, cantors, musicians etc. The goal is to have all adults learn how to help stop child abuse before it happens.

If you were previously certified, it is time to renew! Once fingerprinted, it does not need to be repeated; however, Virtus training is valid for only four (4) years. If you have any questions, please contact Michelle Berlin via email at [email protected]. Please plan on joining your fellow volunteers on Monday, September 24 from 6:30-9:30pm.

Thank you. Greetings, SMT Parishioners,
