Inspired by the great Italian frescoes of the Scrovegni in Padua, Marcelo Cesena has composed an original work on piano that invites audiences to discover what motivated Giotto to create them. The evening will be a presentation of the suite in twelve movements, accompanied by a projection of the work that inspired it. The original suite, by the award-winning Brazilian composer, will be an exploration of the life of Jesus, from his birth, scenes of his public life, passion, death, and resurrection as narrated by Giotto in his frescos and ending with the moving final judgment. Social Justice Corner - Recent Revelations and Responses from Our Leaders The cornerstone of social justice is a belief and subsequent action taken to remedy some of the inequities and ills prevailing in the world around us. For the those of us of faith, the core of our motivation for social justice is at its purest “seeing Christ in others and having them see Christ in us.” Recent events necessitate that we shift our gaze to look within, seeing, acknowledging and demanding with “righteous anger” a full accounting of and detailed plan of accountability for the evils perpetrated at the very core of our Church. Social justice also requires of us an unwavering faith and hope, focused on Christ, which will not allow any evil to deter us from our Faith and right course of action. - Erin Lynch, Respect Life Ministry Coordinator

Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, in a letter addressed to all Catholics: “…announced three key goals and a comprehensive plan to address the ‘moral catastrophe’ of the new abuse scandal hitting the U.S. church.” He said the "substantial involvement of the laity" from law enforcement, psychology and other disciplines will be essential to this process. He also said that right now, it is clear that "one root cause" of this catastrophe "is the failure of episcopal leadership." The three goals Cardinal DiNardo outlined- “The first is a ‘full investigation’ into ‘the questions surrounding’ Archbishop Theodore E. McCarrick….the second and third goals, respectively, as an opening of new and confidential channels for reporting complaints against bishops, and advocacy for more effective resolution of future complaints.” He also laid out the three criteria for pursing these goals: "genuine independence," authority and "substantial involvement by the laity”… "It is also part of this catastrophe that so many faithful priests who are pursuing holiness and serving with integrity are tainted by this failure." Cardinal Sean O’Malley of Boston, President of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors: “We have yet to establish clear and transparent systems of accountability and consequence for Church leadership, whose failures have allowed these crimes to occur. The Church must embrace spiritual conversion and demand legal transparency and pastoral accountability for all who carry out its mission. The crisis we face is the product of clerical sins and clerical failures.” Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles, President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops: “Here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, we have an effective system for reporting and investigating suspected abuse by priests and for removing offenders from ministry. Our oversight board includes both clergy and lay experts from several disciplines and also includes persons who have experienced abuse. We have also established an extensive program of education and background checks to make sure our children are safe and cared for in our , schools, and ministries. We remain committed to keeping our children safe and providing a compassionate environment in which victim-survivors can come forward to seek justice and find healing. If you or anyone you know is a victim of clerical abuse here in Los Angeles, I urge you to call our hotline (800) 355-2545 or visit our website: http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/.” Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone of San Francisco: ‘Such behavior on the part of Church leaders is despicable, reprehensible, and absolutely unbecoming of a man of God.’ Archbishop Charles Chaput, OFM, of Philadelphia: “The only acceptable responses are grief and support for the victims, and comprehensive efforts to ensure that such things never recur. And anger. Anger is also a righteous and necessary response – but it needs to be an anger that bears good fruit; an anger guided by clear thinking, prudence, and a desire for real justice. That kind of anger all of us should feel this week and carry with us into the days ahead.”

Committee for the Poor St. Turibius School is located in the heart of the garment district in downtown Los Angeles. It is a mission school of St. Joseph parish. One hundred percent of their students qualify for free and reduced price lunches which means they meet the School income eligibility guidelines. In essence, these families are living at or below the poverty line which is defined as $11,000 or less per each adult family member in the household. St. Turibius’ parents literally sacrifice everything they have to send their children to a Catholic school. These parents sometimes go without meals so their children are fed, clothed, housed and have a Catholic education. Although the School is lacking in financial resources, it is rich in spirit, faith and commitment to providing the best Catholic education possible to all of its students. th Until September 15 , the Committee for the Poor will be collecting school supplies in particular the following are especially needed: Single-subject notebooks, College-ruled lined paper, Wide-ruled lined paper, Kinder writing paper, Individual Student whiteboards, Copy paper, Index cards, Post-its, Pencils, Mechanical pencils .07, Pencil lead, Glue sticks, Kleenex, Clorox wipes. Books - Class sets (30): - Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan - Wonder by R.J. Palacio - The House On Mango Street by Sandra Cisnero - The Giver by Lois Lowry - A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park Lastly, St. Turibius received a grant from the Archdiocese that will be providing them with 140 ipads to support student learning (they used to only have 30 for the whole school)! The grant asks that they purchase ipad covers for each device in order to ensure the devices are well protected and last several years.
