15 EPIC Leadership Program

Preparing the Next Generation of AI Leaders

Two of the most signiﬁ cant contributors to the success of the Asphalt Institute are the commitment of its members and dedication of its leadership. Since 1919, voluntary leadership from AI member companies has sustained the Institute. Our future success - and yours - depends on leadership development and the building of a deep bench of experienced, engaged and committed professionals. AI is pleased to offer a program designed to foster future leaders within AI and develop Institute members for further industry leadership.

The name of the program “EPIC” is an acronym representing the four ways adult learners engage in professional development: Experiential Participatory Image-driven Connective

This program is designed to create learning opportunities where participants experience events with others, actively participate in dialogue, visually see examples and connect with peers as a cohort learning. Similar to the executive MBA model, the EPIC program is a perfect next step for future asphalt industry leaders to seriously consider.

Example Requirements: EPIC participants are given a syllabus at the beginning of the program which lists the speciﬁ c requirements. A few of these are to attend membership meetings and participate in scheduled EPIC-speciﬁ c activities at those meetings (breakfasts, panel discussions, etc.) They must attend a 2-day summer training program which covers “core curriculum” at the Asphalt Institute Headquarters in Lexington, KY. EPICs must participate in 3 facility tours/seminars and 2 elective activities such as AI webinars, trade shows and mentoring a new or prospective member.

Each member company may submit one candidate per class for application to the program. The maximum number of participants per term is 14. Applicants complete an application form available from staff. AI’s EPIC Class Selection Committee will review applications and conﬁ rm program participants.

The Finance Committee has responsibility for ﬁ nancial oversight of institute affairs. This committee advises the Executive Committee and Board of Directors on ﬁ nancial policy and controls that safeguard institute assets. It oversees the development of budgets, forecasts, long-term projections and dues structure and monitors their implementation once approved by the board. Working with the Investment Committee, it oversees performance of institute reserves by reviewing the trustee's compliance with Investment Policy and by utilizing Reserve Policy guidelines.

107 Investment Committee

The Investment Committee is chaired by the treasurer and has ﬁ duciary and ﬁ nancial oversight responsibility for the institute's three reserve funds and the Employee Thrift Plan. The committee reviews quality and performance of funds in compliance with investment policy on a quarterly basis by phone and in person. It reviews and recommends changes to investment policies, trustees and investment advisors. Committee members will be assisted by a registered investment advisor and will be kept informed of recommended best practices and appropriate laws and regulations for compliance purposes. Finance Committee experience is helpful for this position.

EPIC is an acronym representing the ways adults learn. Experiential, Participatory, Image-driven and Communicative. The institute's EPIC Leadership Development Program is designed to build leaders within our membership, expand member knowledge of our industry and advance member understanding of the inner workings of the institute.

The EPIC Selection Committee review the applications for potential program participants. Students who fall behind in course work or who may be at risk for completing the program are referred to this committee for determination of corrective action. This committee may also be called upon to make a ruling on substitute students during the academic year.

119 Asphalt Pavement Alliance (APA)

The Asphalt Pavement Alliance (APA) is a coalition between the Asphalt Institute, the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) and the State Asphalt Pavement Association (SAPA). The Alliance's mission is to establish asphalt pavement as the preferred choice for quality, performance and the environment. NAPA/AI staff work together on content, media relations, social media, development and distribution of materials.

Marketing Council The APA Marketing Council oversees the Go-to-Market initiative, the Pavement Economics Committee and the APA Advisory Council. The council is made up of three member representatives and the AI President.
