Aggregate Industries carried out extensive preparatory and modelling work to establish optimum working windows, delivery and laying rates of the material. In addition the installation of the traffic management was revised, allowing the closure of the motorway to happen more quickly, which in turn helped to maximise the available working window. It successfully met the challenge on resurfacing work on the M5 in February 2015.

As a result of the success of the project, we are now part of a cross-industry Pavement Efficiency Steering Group, which is led by Highways England, and its 1,000 tonne solution is now cited as best practice. 14 15

We have worked with Open Energi to achieve a world first; a ground-breaking project to equip nearly 250 bitumen tanks at our asphalt plants nationwide with dynamic demand technology. We make regular bulk deliveries to our aggregate depots at the Isle of As a result, the tanks increase or decrease their demand for energy in line with supply and Grain (Kent) London Gateway (Essex) and Liverpool Seaforth Docks help balance the National Grid as they deal with surplus energy spikes or dips in available and associated asphalt and RMX plants. capacity. Collectively, the tanks are providing the National Grid with around 4MW of demand response, which National Grid does not have to procure from a power station, helping to Rail Transport reduce CO2 emissions. By using this technology we aim to cut our CO2 emissions by 50,000 tonnes over five years. Bardon Hill produces, on average, three million tonnes of crushed rock each year, with around one in 2012 to 87 litres / tonne in 2015. We have achieved this by reducing the quantity of water 2012 2013 2014 2015 that is used once and then discharged. Instead, we recycle as much water as possible, for third distributed by rail. GB Railfreight runs five flows a day, five example washing the lorries and then using it in concrete. Community and Biodiversity Case Study BMX Bikers on Track Aggregate Industries donated over £30,000 worth of materials and Aggregate Industries aims to make a positive impact in the areas in which we operate, from labour for a new national standard BMX track in Leicestershire. promoting biodiversity across our vast landholding to engaging with local communities. The Leicester Hornets BMX Club received a £50,000 grant from Sport England which, together with the our support and other local sponsors, enabled them to bring the club’s facilities up to an international standard ahead of them hosting the regional BMX championships in September 2015.

We supply materials for some of the leading race tracks in the world including Silverstone. Using our expertise on such a worthwhile community project that nurtures young sporting talent is a great example of how we can make a difference to local communities.

Community at Callow Rock Our Callow Rock quarry in Somerset is a great example of our approach to community engagement in action. Activity at the quarry in 2015 included:

• 20 school visits with approximately 300 children covering subjects such as safety in quarries, local industrial history, geology and product information. • Work experience placements with the local academy in Cheddar and students from Camborne School of Mining. • Bi-annual quarry open days for the local community providing fun activities for families and the opportunity to raise money for local charities. • Regular liaison with representatives from The Wildlife Trust, local parish, district & county council to discuss forthcoming plans and operations. Community Community plans are in place for all key sites, which are reviewed on an annual basis. In 2015 we donated more than £140,000 to local communities and good causes through donations of funds, labour, On the Nature Trail skills and materials.
