WWOZ Board of Directors Chief Operating Officer’s Report May 11, 2016

1. & Heritage Festival. WWOZ provided full broadcast and website coverage of the 46th annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, held April 22-24 and April 28-May 1, 2016. WWOZ provided live feeds to nine stations across North America. More than 100 volunteers helped WWOZ staff carry out WWOZ’s multiple Jazz Fest activities at the Fairgrounds, including the live broadcast, national syndication and simulcast broadcasts, WWOZ Brass Pass distribution, the WWOZ Hospitality Tent, and WWOZ Mango Freeze sales. WWOZ entered into a collaboration with New Orleans’ skywriting company Positive Sky, who rendered “WWOZ” in the skies above the festival at pre-arranged times, allowing us to post pictures of the writing on social media for posterity.

2. Piano Night. WWOZ held its annual WWOZ Piano Night fundraiser at the House of New Orleans on April 25, 2016, with performances by Tom McDermott, Kyle Roussel, Courtney Bryant, Conun Pappas, Craig Adams, Marty Sammon, Joe Krown, Henry Butler, John Gros, John O’Brien, Jesse McBride, Marcia Ball, Sonny Schneidau, and Monty Alexander—Harlem Kingston Express.

3. Membership. As of March 31, 2016, WWOZ has received $1,888,595 in donations for FY 2016, a year-to-date increase of 18% over the $1,602,699 received during the same period in FY 2015. For the second year in a row, WWOZ sold its entire inventory of 3,500 Brass Passes to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

a. In the month of March 2016 alone, WWOZ received $720,194 in membership revenue, a 15% increase over revenue of $628,949 in March 2015.

b. Ticket pre-sales for Piano Night 2016 totaled a record 350 general admission tickets, owing to a marketing campaign—using direct mail, social media, and face-to-face interaction—person that combined Piano Night and Brass Passes to Jazz Fest, encouraging members to purchase both.

4. Underwriting & Sponsorship (including Piano Night). As of March 31, 2016, WWOZ has collected $217,799 in underwriting and sponsorship revenue for FY 2016, a decrease of 4% from the $225,716 in revenue generated during the same period in FY 2015.

a) For the fiscal year through March 31, 2016, the total dollar value of WWOZ’s signed underwriting agreements is $158,548, a 66% increase over the total value ($95,591) of agreements signed during the same period in FY 2015.

5. Major Giving & New Orleans Calling. As of March 31, 2016, WWOZ has generated $113,955 in revenue from major donors and from grants for New Orleans Calling for FY 2016, compared to $118,214 for the same period in FY 2015, a 4% decrease.

6. WWOZ Mango Freeze at Jazz Fest 2016. Dangerous thunderstorms and flooding hit New Orleans on April 30 and May 1 (the final Saturday and Sunday of Jazz Fest) and had a negative effect on sales.

7. Swamp Shop. As of March 31, 2016, the WWOZ Swamp Shop generated revenue of $14,229 for FY 2016, a 57% decrease from the revenue of $33,136 earned in March 2015. During the month of March 2016 alone, Swamp Shop sales totaled $2,035, a 57% decrease from sales of $4,682 in March 2015.

8. New Media. On April 23, 2016, New Orleans’ Positive Sky rendered the late Prince’s erstwhile stage name in skywriting above the Jazz & Heritage Festival. WWOZ’s Facebook post featuring photograph of the symbol in the sky generated more than 18 million impressions, and more than 1 million interactions (likes, shares and comments). The post drew several thousand new followers to the WWOZ’s Facebook page, which now has 80,000 total followers.

It continues to grow in both size and perks. ‘We sold out of them this year,’ Sondra Bibb, host of a contemporary jazz show on WWOZ, said of the 2016 Brass Passes that allow access to the station's tent. ‘It really speaks to the love of the radio station and also the sense of community and camaraderie that happens within the hospitality tent. It's almost like a family reunion at Jazz Fest because you see so many of the same faces’ each year.”
