OffBeat/offbeat.com: “WWOZ to Air Two-Part Celebration of on His Birthday” Sam DArcangelo, January 12, 2016

“WWOZ will air a special, two-part episode of New Orleans Calling in honor of Allen Toussaint’s birthday on January 14. The broadcast will take place from 2pm-4pm CT.”

“Part One lets Toussaint tell his story in his own words using interviews preserved at the Archive of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation.”

“Part Two includes interviews with some of Toussaint’s longtime collaborators and friends. It paints a picture of a remarkable and seemingly contradictory man, who was both soft spoken and powerful, and who was able to bring out the best in musicians.”

Gambit/bestofneworleans.com: “Blake Pontchartrain: Who is ‘Infrogmation’?” January 11, 2016

“Froggy, as some people call him, asked that we not reveal his real name, preferring to protect the anonymity under which he works online. We can tell you that he has lived in New Orleans since 1977, has been a volunteer on WWOZ since its earliest days in 1981 and hosts a weekly traditional jazz show on Monday mornings. Infrogmation also writes about jazz history.”

The Advocate [Baton Rouge]/theadvocate.com: “Smiley: True grits?” Smiley Anders, January 6, 2016

“I treasure the few radio stations that still promote local and regional music — in New Orleans, WWOZ; in Acadiana, KVPI in Ville Platte, and in Baton Rouge, WBRH and KBRH, the Baton Rouge High stations. Rob Payer says the Baton Rouge stations will have a new simulcast music show starting Saturday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The great singer Luther Kent will host the show, ‘Luther’s House Party.’”

OffBeat/offbeat.com: “Lifetime Achievement in Music Business: Roland and Mary Von Kurnatowski” Jennifer Odell, December 28, 2015

“Once the [Tipitina’s Foundation] launched in 2003, its primary focus was a fundraiser held on the Monday between Jazz Fest weekends. WWOZ had recently moved Piano Night to a new location after years of presenting the annual show at Tip’s. Knowing there was an audience in town that had become used to attending a charity event on that night at the club, the Von Kurnatowskis and their staff saw an opportunity and staged the foundation’s first major event—a fundraiser for Mardi Gras Indians called Injuns a Comin’.”

OffBeat/offbeat.com: “Second Line Mural Project Seeks Funding via Kickstarter” Sam DArcangelo, December 28, 2015

“[Henry Lipkis], who now calls New Orleans home, wants to turn the empty wall into a massive mural celebrating the city’s second line culture. It’s a dream that has even received some support from the community, with WWOZ DJ Action Jackson and the three clubs that second line near the wall each year—the Original C.T.C. Steppers, Original Big Nine, and Original Nine Times—making contributions to the project.”

The Washington Times/washingtontimes.com: “Artist plans second-line parade mural on St. Claude Avenue” Doug McCash (Associated Press), December 26, 2015

“[Henry] Lipkis also turned to WWOZ ‘Takin’ It to the Streets’ disc jockey Action Jackson for advice on the mural’s contact and placement. ‘Any positive acknowledgement of the second-lines is good,’ Jackson said. ‘We don’t have anything like that down here.’”
