Boston Globe, August 25, 2010. “In Big Easy, Too Much Drama,” Jed Horne.

―No, we didn‘t stage the BP disaster just to keep Louisiana in the limelight. We‘re desperate down here, but not that desperate.

Even before the spill, New Orleans had given Spike Lee plenty of material for his latest documentary. The ―Treme‖ series on HBO has subplots enough without soaking Chief Lambreaux‘s plumage in an oil slick. With the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina looming on Sunday, both breaking news and the long-form shows that feed off it are keeping outside attention on a city with a nationwide fan base that can seem like a cult.

But connoisseurs of all things New Orleans — the whole jazz-loving, WWOZ- streaming, beignet-munching bunch of you — should know this: As BP and Katrina fade from the headlines, your loyalty to the Big Easy is about to be tested.‖

―Donors from around the country shipped in even more toys and we threw a holiday party where musicians picked out toys for their families. There were so many toys left over that we eventually drove to WWOZ, parked outside in a jeep and DJ Bob French announced to anyone listening that they could drive downtown and pick up brand new Christmas toys. ‗And this is good stuff too, not just some crap,‘ he said. ‗If it had been crap, that's the first thing he would have announced.‘ ‖

WWOZ Board of Directors Meeting September 28, 2010 General Manager's Report

Marin (California) Independent Journal, August 22, 2010, ―Sunday Readers Forum,‖ Rick Huber, Novato

Vandalism hits a chord

There are surely mature eucalyptus trees available in Australia (IJ, Aug. 14, "View vandal trashes trees"). Shipping, handling, a fine and jail time are in order. (Interestingly, "I Learned the Hard Way" by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings is just now playing on WWOZ.org, New Orleans.)

Liberation, 8-20-10, Lorraine Millot

Repository Pick: "Save the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic" with WWOZ ―New Orleans music is a prized piece of American culture—and the lifeblood of WWOZ community radio, which bills itself as ―the New Orleans jazz and heritage station.‖ Now WWOZ is helping to save the New Orleans Musicians‘ Clinic, which since 1998 has worked with the LSU Healthcare Network to provide free and low-cost medical care to the city‘s musicians—and is now faced with closure due to loss of federal funding. ‗The gulf oil spill has been as devastating as the flooding, with many people out of jobs and many of our seafood specialties either gone or in short supply,‘ he said. ‗Our new hospital, to replace Charity Hospital lost in the storm, is now more than four years away from completion.‘

Music and culture are important to the city's well-being, he added. ‗So listen and enjoy this fine musical tribute.‘ "

In 1993, Milkowski moved to New Orleans, where he indulged in all manner of decadence and over-eating and second lining. During his three-year stay in the Crescent City, he served as the overnight dj on radio station WWOZ. His "Milkman's Matinee" program, which aired from 2-5 a.m., was a particular favorite with insomniacs and musicians coming home from their gigs. Vanity Fair, June 21, 2010, Mark Hertsgaard, ―Down in the Treme, Oil Spill More Frightening than Katrina

―People still talk about his spine-tingling performance of Randy Newman‘s mournful ballad, Louisiana 1927, at the first Jazz Fest after Katrina, in April of 2006. Newman‘s song describes the death, destruction, and inept government response that followed the record flooding of the Mississippi river in 1927, all themes that resurfaced during Katrina. At Jazz Fest, Boutte made the parallels between the two disasters explicit by altering the lyrics of the first verse. Instead of the floods leaving ―six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline,‖ as Newman had it, Boutte sang that there were ―six feet of water in the streets of the Lower Nine.‖ Many in the Jazz Fest crowd reportedly broke into tears. It‘s said to be an unforgettable performance, but good luck finding a recording of it. Boutte‘s feat was included on an album of Jazz Fest 2006 highlights compiled by WWOZ, an institution that calls itself the greatest radio station in the world, but the album is no longer available, according to the staff at The , the city‘s premier record store.‖

cnn.com, June 9, 2010, Todd Leopold, ―So Far, Celebrities Keep a Low Profile on Oil Spill.‖

―[However] the Gulf Coast music and business community has been quick to react. Through the quickly established Gulf Relief Foundation, the groups arranged Gulf Aid, a May 16 concert in New Orleans that featured Lenny Kravitz, John Legend, Mos Def, Ani DiFranco and a number of local acts. The show raised more than $300,000.

But then, says David Freedman, general manager of New Orleans community radio station WWOZ-FM and a board member of the foundation, they've seen this movie before.

‗From the little bit we know, it sounds like it's Katrina all over again,‘ he says, comparing the engineering mistakes that led to the oil spill to what he called the faulty levees that led to the flooding of New Orleans.

‗The thing that we learned in that experience of 2005 was, don't wait. Because you could be waiting a long time for people to help you.‘

Freedman admits that Gulf Aid is still working out how to distribute its funds -- testament to the difficult nature of the oil spill and questions surrounding who else will pick up the bill. But he says there's no question that help is needed.

‗The economic devastation is going to be measured with Bs -- billions,‘ he says. ‗My feeling, having gone down there [to the Louisiana coast], is there's just palpable terror‘ among fishermen and local workers. ‗They don't know what they're going to do. And we're looking at it as how we can make a difference.‘

Freedman says the foundation is just getting started, and plans are in the works for other events, some with national reach. A DVD of Gulf Aid is due this month and a song by Kravitz and Mos Def, I‘t Ain't My Fault,‘ recently came out on iTunes.‖

Thank you OZ!!!! We appreciate your help with our [Louis Armstrong Jazz] camp. You all were great! We have 30 folks already signed up for next year, half of the camp. They said it was the best camp they had ever been to. When they played at P. Hall some had tears in their eyes saying that they never thought they would be able to play at P. Hall. We had made their dream come true. Very moving for us. One camper bought Banu, Leslie and I a dozen of the most beautiful roses. It was such a special time for them and us too.

Thank you OZ for your consistent support of camp. You get the gold star! Many thanks.
