9. Volunteer Activity. Over 300 off-air volunteers assisted WWOZ throughout the pledge drive, Outreach initiatives, French Quarter Fest, and Jazz Fest. Piano Night went smoothly thanks to the support of 70 off-air volunteers. Twenty volunteers who were trained to post playlists have reduced playlist entries to May, June and July! Our youngest volunteer is 16 year old Connor Ringenberg. Jims Roots and Blues Calendar, New York City, John Sarovan, July 10, 2011 http://jimsrootsandblues.com/blog/hazel-the-delta-rambler/

When I lived in New Orleans, I was lucky enough to befriend a program host on community radio, Hazel the Delta Rambler, a.k.a. Hazel Schlueter.

During my first weekend of being a medical student, I was checking out the left end of the FM dial and heard Uncle Dave Macon singing. What was he doing on the radio? I called into the radio station to find out what was going on. Hazel answered the phone. I said I was new in town and played clawhammer banjo. Hazel said, ―Clawhammer banjo!‖ Then I told her I was a medical student at Tulane. ―Tulane!‖ She took down my phone number and said that she would call me the next time they had a pickin‘ party over her house. I thought to myself there was no way in heck this person on the radio was going to call me. But she did. Two weeks later.

Twelve years after graduating from medical school and sixteen years after meeting Hazel, I still call in to WWOZ 90.7 FM almost every Sunday between the hours of 11 am and 1 pm (NYC time) during her old-time, country and bluegrass show. I have listened weekly over the internet since I moved away in June of 1999. In addition to music from familiar and unfamiliar musicians from the present to the past, piles of wisdom, and in studio performances, I excitedly await annual shows like variations on the Eighth of January, Amelia Earhart songs near the Fourth, ―summer crazies‖ anytime after, and election songs (every other year).

If I have any success in piquing your interest in Hazel, your love of WWOZ programmers may grow like mine has. There‘s Charles Laborde, and Gentilly Jr., and Brother Jesse, and Billy Delle and…

Huffington Post, Karen Dalton-Beninato, ―Independence Day: Treme Season Finale,‖ July 4, 2011 [DJ] Davis … winds up the episode beautifully at WWOZ-FM, although even if he gets back on board as a DJ, he'll still be a volunteer. .org/ A Blog Supreme, Josh Jackson and Patrick Jarenwattananon, ―Treme, Episode 21: Jazz and Heritage,‖ July 4, 2011

I know I found it pleasing that New Orleans free jazz saxophonist got a track on the show, played on WWOZ — and it sounded quite good too.

When Annie is started by her dream, WWOZ is playing "Yesterdays" from Harold Battiste and the American Jazz Quintet. And when Davis relieves DJ Jeffy Jeff, he segues from Kidd Jordan to 's "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams," from Okeh Records.

Oregon Music News, Tom D‘Antoni, ―Waterfront Blues Festival 2011: How to Spend Your Sunday,‖ July 3, 2011

In the spring of 2007, Meschiya Lake began singing with the Crescent City‘s traditional jazz outfit, the Loose Marbles, on Royal Street in New Orleans‘ French Quarter. Joined by dancers Chance Bushman and Amy Johnson, the Marbles helped usher in a new revival of traditional jazz and dance. Bringing the joy and vitality of New Orleans‘ spirit while wowing audiences both young and old, they toured the and Europe, playing on streets, in clubs, and leaving a trail of write-ups in publications along the way. (The Loose Marbles performed at Waterfront Blues Festival in 2009, though without Meschiya).

Once back home in New Orleans, Meschiya delighted in participating in and watching the jazz revival unfold around her, with jazz and jazz dance fever bringing more and more musicians and dancers to town. Meschiya formed ‗ The Little Big Horns Jazz Band‗ in the Spring of 2009 and, saving pennies from the street, produced the first Little Big Horns album, Lucky Devil, to National Acclaim. On the 5th anniversary of Katrina, DJ David Kunian of WWOZ cited Lucky Devil as one of his four favorite releases of 2010 on NPR‘s All Things Considered.

We'd have a heritage radio station like New Orleans WWOZ, but, obviously, focused on Nashville music. All kinds of Nashville music. I mean, man, the other day when Lightning 100 did that full day of Nashville musicians? That blew my mind. A radio station that played only people who lived here, from any and all genres and any and all eras? I'd love that.

But wait — there's more. Gentilly Jr., a DJ on WWOZ, plays Betty Carter's "Let It Snow" when Antoine is at home. Big Joe Williams (not the Count Basie vocalist) sings "Christmas Blues" during the final montage, and the title of the episode, "Santa Claus, Do You Ever Get the Blues?" is from Roomful of Blues. J. Monqué D, once known as James Monque Digby, is 65, about to play this Saturday at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival where he has performed every year but two. After playing for the homeless and less fortunate last week at St. Joseph Catholic Church‘s Rebuild Center where he wore an oh-so-N‘Awlins ―Gentilly Jr. WWOZ T-shirt, he retired to Henry‘s Bar on where he was counting his blessings, but not his beers. npr.org/ A Blog Supreme, Josh Jackson and Patrick Jarenwattananon, ―Treme, Episode. 11: 14 Months After,‖ April 25 , 2011

JJ: When I worked at WWOZ, I marched in a parade wearing a giant plaster head of Sidney Bechet. The temperature was more than 90 degrees that day, and I honestly thought I was going to die inside Bechet's head. I thought of that very true story to illustrate a great quote from his autobiography, Treat It Gentle: But, you know, no music is my music. It's everybody's who can feel it. You're here ... well, if there's music, you feel it — then it's yours, too. You got to be in the sun to feel the sun. It's that way with music, too. PJ: Speaking of New Orleans hip-hop, we were told we'd see more this season, and there's a fair amount in this episode. We hear a bit of Lil Wayne and Birdman's "Stuntin' Like My Daddy" megahit in the strip club — more New Orleans superstars. And 10th Ward Buck's song "Drop & Gimme 50" is played under Sofia's video, plus on WWOZ. In fact, Davis gets in trouble for playing too much bounce/rap. There seems to be a tension between the jazz//R&B continuum and hip-hop, which is incompletely resolved, Juve appearances notwithstanding. JJ: WWOZ was never really invested in hip-hop. That's not to say that there aren't some volunteer DJs who know the music and promote the occasional dalliance with it. Whether you like it or not, brass players and hip-hop MCs will continue to collaborate. I think commercial radio stations like WYLD have carried the hip-hop banner far more effectively.

NEW ORLEANS (CN) - A panel that included a U.S. senator and Kenneth Feinberg, the administrator of BP's $20 billion claims fund, prematurely ended its question and answer session at the Hilton Riverside Hotel when questions were increasingly outweighed by dark comments, including one from a man who called Feinberg a liar.

Sitting on the panel with Feinberg was David Freedman, general manager of WWOZ-FM and a member of the Gulf Relief Foundation executive committee. Freedman cited Feinberg's past successes in handling Agent Orange claims and as special master for the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund. "You are highly regarded in New York for the work you have done," Freedman told Feinberg. But in the Gulf, "Frankly, people think that you're disingenuous, dishonest, that you're an agent of BP." Freedman said he had a problem with Feinberg's comment that "we're all in this together," because "BP hasn't been a good player." Freedman pointed out that on the first anniversary of the beginning of the disaster, BP hadn't even made a public statement. "You're what's left," Freedman told Feinberg.

[DJ] Davis, who may be angling for a Febreze sponsorship, gets the apartment ready for Annie to come back from the road. He's DJ'ing on WWOZ-FM promoting Sissy Bounce to the chagrin of the program manager. There's yet another warning to make his set more traditional. It never happened, but that's a spoiler alert. Hopefully the DJ Bob French incident is also planned for down the road.
