Date: 28 / 05 / 2021 Issue: 9 Reading at Moorak Primary School

Reading continues to be a focus at Moorak Primary School.

The successful ‘Reading Mentors’ happens every Monday and Tuesday afternoon for 15 minutes. This is such a wonderful time for children to sit and read with another child from school. They are also creating connections and relationships within the school .

How can I help my child with reading at home?

Before Reading

 Look at the front cover and discuss the picture.

 Ask your child to make a connection. For example, if the front cover is of a picnic, talk about a time you have had a picnic, have seen a picnic or anything else you might think about a picnic.

 Predict what the book might be about from the front cover.

Look out for our next newsletter to see how to help your child during reading.

Library Library lessons are such an important part of our school week and curriculum. When we go to the library and we learn about scanning using the school barcodes, how to find fiction and non-fiction books and learn how to put books away. Each week your child will be bring home new library books. We have new books that expand across all genres and interests. It is so important that each week you spend the time reading your child library books. Please make sure your child has a library bag so the books are looked after. A plastic shopping bag is great. If you cannot access a bag please send your teacher a Seesaw message.

Date: 28 / 05 / 2021 Issue: 9 Miss Wilson and Miss Hocking’s Year 1 / 2’s Maths Strategies We have been learning all about maths strategies that help us add/count quickly!!

Rainbow Facts help us add quickly to 10! When we see 6 and 4 we know that the answer is 10.

Adding zero is easy. If you have 3 marbles in one hand and none in the other the number doesn’t change.

Friendly Numbers – A friendly number is a number ending with 0. 10, 20, 30 etc. To add number to 0, the 0 goes away and the number takes it’s place. 10 and 6 makes 16.

Date: 28 / 05 / 2021 Issue: 9 Reconciliation Week (27th of May – 3rd June)

Martu karu everyone (hello everyone) As a part of Reconciliation Week, a group of students were invited to attend an excursion. The excursion involved a visit to the Mount Gambier Public Library and the Main Corner. At the library we listened to Aunty Michelle (a well-respected Boandik elder from within our community) read her latest book, “Annie Connects with Boandik Culture”. We learnt about the legend of “How the Emu Got Short Wings”. Then we contributed to a collaborative piece of artwork that will be hung indefinitely in the entrance of the library once it is finished. After that we said Wuwu (goodbye) to Aunty Michelle and made our way to the Art Gallery and the Kings Room at the Main Corner. It was a lovely day out and about within the wider community and we even managed to have lunch in the Cave Gardens between a few raindrops. Wuwu everyone (goodbye everyone). Kind regards, Miss Doll

Student’s thoughts on the excursion. Tyson: At the Art Gallery I liked the “moving room” and it was good looking at Aunty Michelle’s new book. It was also great when she spoke to us using Boandik Language.

Sophie: I liked how Aunty Michelle read her new book and I loved how all the art was all very detailed in the Art Gallery.

Wade: My favourite part was the “moving house” in the Art Gallery.

Isaac: I like when I got a bracelet at the Library and the “moving house” in the Art Gallery.

Hallie M: I liked how Aunty Michelle read her book and how we got to do the artwork. At the Main Corner I loved the Kings Room, but I was afraid walking up the stairs because I’m afraid of heights.

Abbie: I liked how Aunty Michelle told us all the different stories and when we put Aboriginal patterns on the animals. I like all the artwork in the Art Gallery.

Jaxon: I basically liked everything. Listening to Aunty Michelle read the book was good.

Billie: My favourite part was the Art Gallery. I liked the “moving kitchen” and the reindeer with the diamonds. Some people got scared when the doors slammed shut in the “moving kitchen”.

Malik: I liked wishing for milk and money at the wishing fountain in the Cave Gardens.

Kalan: My favourite part was the Kings Room at the Main Corner because there were cool pictures and videos. I also liked the “moving kitchen” in the Art Gallery.

Milla: My favourite part was the “creepy house” in the Art Gallery and walking down the steps and looking over the edge at the Cave Gardens.

Ayden: The best bit was when the cupboards went BANG! (at the Art Gallery) and when we got to crawl through the tunnel at the Library.
