INTRODUCTION TO HOCKEY CANADA PLAYING RULES This publication includes Hockey Canada Playing Rules along with situations (cases) related to the official rules. Hockey Canada Playing Rules are an important reference for officials, players, coaches, and hockey executives. They provide guidance and information about how the playing rules are to be applied in various situations, and clarify misunderstandings related to the application of the rules. Hockey Canada respects gender diversity. As such, its playing rules are written using neutral nouns and pronouns to respect all genders. FOREWORD Hockey Canada Playing Rules do not constitute a procedures manual. Approved procedures and techniques for officials can be found in the Hockey Canada Officiating Resources. This process should not take more than 15 seconds and will be completed prior to the game, at the end of the pre-game warm-up. Officials are also encouraged to shake hands with the captains where possible.” This process is supported by the Coaching Program, Officiating Program and the Hockey Canada Board of Directors. Kryczka iv HOCKEY CANADA PLAYING RULES 2020-2022 HOCKEYCANADA.CA HOCKEY CANADA PLAYING RULES MESSAGE FROM THE HOCKEY CANADA BOARD OF DIRECTORS The rules which are contained in this book are the only rules which are to be used in the playing of hockey under the jurisdiction of Hockey Canada. Members or leagues choosing to play outside these rules will be subjected to discipline and will at a minimum, forfeit the right to the Hockey Canada Insurance Program. However, during regional competition, Members may make variations to Hockey Canada Official Rules, providing these variations are more restrictive than the rules as written. A game should be refereed strictly in accordance with the rules. In individual cases, Referees may feel that the rules are in some respect not satisfactory. However, it is not up to an individual to de- cide if a rule should or should not be applied. Rules are approved by Hockey Canada’s membership and are to be changed only through the democratic process at given periods of time. Referees are directed to thoroughly apply the rules of the Association and its Members. If a Referee has difficulty in the interpretation of any rule, the Referee should consult with the Member Referee-in-Chief. If such person cannot give a satisfactory interpretation, the Hockey Canada Referee-in-Chief should be contacted. It is understandable that in a country of the geographic expanse of Canada, a uniform interpretation of the rules may prove somewhat difficult. That, however, is the goal which is to be aimed at, and if the rules are strictly adhered to in all parts of Canada, it should not be hard to come near achieving that goal. These playing rules become effective with the commencement of the 2021-2022 season.     CAMBRIDGE SPORTS HALL OF FAME Jim Schoenfeld September 4, 1952 – Galt native Jim Schoenfeld was the first defenceman and the fifth player chosen overall in the 1972 NHL draft. After finishing his Junior A career with the Niagara Falls Flyers, Jim went to the Buffalo Sabres, where big things were expected from him. He didn’t disappoint. In his rookie season he was immediately paired with hockey great Tim Horton. He joined a Sabres team with such future legends as Gilbert Perreault, the late Rick Martin and Rene Robert, known as the French Connection Line. Over the next 13 years in the NHL, Schoenfeld earned a reputation as a strong positional player, a great shot blocker and an aggressive, tough defenceman. In 1974-75 the Sabres, a team of star players, had one of the strongest squads in the league, losing out in the Stanley Cup finals to the Philadelphia Flyers. Their captain was Schoenfeld. He had become Buffalo’s – and the NHL’s – youngest-ever captain in 1974 at the ripe old age of 22. S c h o e n f e l d ’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed. He was a second team all- star in 1979-80, and today is an honoured member of both the Buffalo Sabres and the Greater Buffalo Sports Halls of Fame. Schoenfeld had a lead- ing role in one of the legendary moments in Sabres’ history. This development is problematicas none of the theories that courts employ to justify this intervention adequately take into account the expectations of participantsand the interests of the ruling bodies of sports. This Essay proposes a standardfor the interaction of violent sports and criminal law that attempts to reconcile the rules of violent sports with the aims of the criminal law. JEFFREY STANDEN* I. INTRODUCTION When not on the playing field, an athlete stands in the same relation to the criminal law as does any other citizen.1 The particular requirements of the athlete's sport, where that sport includes acts of a violent nature, do not supply the athlete a special defense of "diminished capacity.

    New York University Intramural Department Team Handball Rules Team Rules and Responsibilities 1. Teams must start or finish (due to injury or ejection) with three (3) players minimum. If this is not followed, a technical foul will be called and a penalty throw will be awarded. 5. Unsportsmanlike conduct against a scorekeeper, referee, any opposing player, or a teammate, a rejection from the game will occur. 6. Any team using an ineligible player will forfeit all remaining games on the schedule and will be removed from the league. 7. No player may play for more than one team. 8. Teams and players are susceptible to being barred from the playoffs. 9. Players who receive red cards during play will be ejected from the contest and possibly suspended for the following game. 10. ALL players are expected to display sportsmanlike conduct in compliance with NYU Intramurals. Equipment 1.
