Quiros, National Partnership for Juvenile Services September 2012 Scott Bernard Peterson, Global Youth Justice A Findings and Implications of the Research A new study supported by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), U.S. Department of Justice, identifies effective practices and strategies to improve the mentoring experience for at-risk and high-risk youth who are involved in the juvenile justice system. Researching the Referral Stage of Youth Mentoring in Six Juvenile Justice Settings: An Exploratory Analysis examines best practices for referring youth to mentoring when they are in certain juvenile justice system settings, including Juvenile Detention, Juvenile Corrections, Juvenile Probation, Delinquency Court, Youth/Teen Court and Dependency Court. As a low-cost delinquency prevention and intervention option that capitalizes on the resources of local communities and caring individuals, mentoring has emerged as a promising delinquency reduction strategy for at-risk or high-risk youth. This research study, which used multiple methods to capture data from mentoring and juvenile justice settings, provides a deeper understanding of how youth are referred to mentoring, challenges faced during the referral process, examples of effective strategies to face the challenges and action steps. The research was conducted by a team that included Global Youth Justice, National Partnership for Juvenile Services, MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership and criminal justice researchers from the University of Texas at San Antonio. -

Kenneth Burke and the Theory of Scapegoating Charles K. Bellinger Words sometimes play important roles in human history. I think, for example, of Martin Luther’s use of the word grace to shatter Medieval Catholicism, or the use of democracy as a rallying cry for the American colonists in their split with England, or Karl Marx’s vision of the proletariat as a class that would end all classes. More recently, freedom has been used as a mantra by those on the political left and the political right. If a president decides to go war, with the argument that freedom will be spread in the Middle East, then we are reminded once again of the power of words in shaping human actions. This is a notion upon which Kenneth Burke placed great stress as he painted a picture of human beings as word-intoxicated, symbol-using agents whose motives ought to be understood logologically, that is, from the perspective of our use and abuse of words. In the following pages, I will argue that there is a key word that has the potential to make a large impact on human life in the future, the word scapegoat. This word is already in common use, of course, but I suggest that it is something akin to a ticking bomb in that it has untapped potential to change the way human beings think and act. This potential has two main aspects: 1) the ambiguity of the word as it is used in various contexts, and 2) the sense in which the word lies on the boundary between human self-consciousness and unself-consciousness. -

Session 4 Personal Safety: Handling taunting/ bullying Rationale Children are often taunted and bullied by their peers, older children and at times by adults. They have a few ways of handling such incidents, ranging from retaliation, complaining to someone in authority, ignoring the taunts and at times, internalizing the damaging message. This can reduce a child’s self- esteem. We need to help children understand that words, like the deeds of a person, describe and tell others about the character and personality of the person doing the taunting. Some experts estimate the cost of downtime and employee turnover as a result of bullying to run into the billions. In fact, most studies show that 50% of employees have either witnessed or been a victim of bullying at work. Workplace bullying of any type is truly unacceptable. Psychologists have compared the effects of bullying on victims as similar to post-traumatic stress disorder. The stress of bullying manifests into real physical and mental health issues. It increases employee turnover - bullied employees are three times more likely to leave a job than non-bullied employees. Lastly, it spreads like wildfire through organizations - destroying them from within. Bullying is like a virus – it spreads exponentially when it’s allowed to flourish. Stress the seriousness! Antony Robert Earnshaw Sheffield Hallam University MA English by Research September 2017 1 Abstract This thesis assesses changing British attitudes to the dramatisation of crimes committed by domestic serial killers and highlights the dearth of films made in this country on this subject. It discusses the notion of taboos and, using empirical and historical research, illustrates how filmmakers’ attempts to initiate productions have been vetoed by social, cultural and political sensitivities. Comparisons are drawn between the prevalence of such product in the United States and its uncommonness in Britain, emphasising the issues around the importing of similar foreign material for exhibition on British cinema screens and the importance of geographic distance to notions of appropriateness. The influence of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is evaluated. This includes a focus on how a central BBFC policy – the so- called 30-year rule of refusing to classify dramatisations of ‘recent’ cases of factual crime – was scrapped and replaced with a case-by-case consideration that allowed for the accommodation of a specific film championing a message of tolerance. -

Victimisation, harassment and sexual harassment all jeopardise the affected person's job satisfaction and chances of success in work or study. As soon as the university becomes aware that someone has been affected, action will be taken immediately. In this brochure, Stockholm University explains • the forms that victimisation, harassment and sexual harassment may take, • what you can do if you or someone else becomes subjected to such behaviour, • the university's responsibilities, • the sanctions faced by those subjecting a person to victimisation, harassment or sexual harassment. However, these occasional conflicts are not considered victimisation or bullying. Victimisation is defined as recurrent reprehensible or negative actions directed against individuals and that may lead to the person experiencing it being marginalised. Examples include deliberate insults, demeaning treatment, ostracism, withholding of information, persecution or threats. Victimisation brings with it the risk that individuals as well as entire groups will be adversely affected, in both the short and long terms.
