Youth health P.A.R.T.Y. Program

The P.A.R.T.Y.(Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth) Program originated in 1986 at the Sunnybrook Hospital in . The program has grown nationally and internationally over the past 29 years to over 100 authorized sites including programs in , Brazil, Germany, , and the U.S.A.In 2003, Island Health signed an agreement with Sunnybrook to be an authorized P.A.R.T.Y.Program site. Island Health held the first P.A.R.T.Y.Program in November of 2003 and has grown the program over the past 12 years to include 11 sites, hosting over 80 sessions annually, and educating an average of 4000 grade 10 students each school year.

The Island Health P.A.R.T.Y. Program has students follow the course of injury from occurrence, through transport, treatment, rehabilitation and community re-integration. They interact with a group of health care professionals that include physicians, nurses, paramedics, and police, in addition to volunteers from the community.

Mission Statement

To promote injury prevention through reality education, enabling youth to recognize risk and make informed choices about activities and behaviors.

Why P.A.R.T.Y.?

The greatest incidence of trauma injury and death occurs in the 15 to 24 year-old age group. P.A.R.T.Y.was created to educate teens to the perils of risk-taking behaviour and the tragic consequences of traumatic injury. This program is a vital component in the growing community effort to reduce death and injury in alcohol and risk-related incidents.

In 2010, Island Health conducted a research study on the program and found that P.A.R.T.Y.graduates have a significantly higher compliance with safe behaviours than non-P.A.R.T.Y.students. P.A.R.T.Y.has the greatest impact on decreasing the use of cell phones while driving, decreasing the number of occasions of driving after midnight, and reducing the incidence of speeding.

Key Messages 1. Buckle up 2. Drive Sober 3. Wearthe Gear 4. Get Trained 5. Look First

The Island P.A.R.T.Y.Program had another successful year in 2014-2015. We held 84 sessions across the Island with 3444 students participating in the program (See Appendix A & Bfor full breakdown).

Additionally, for the second year in a row, the P.A.R.T.Y.Program ran a prevention campaign during grad season featuring bus ads on high youth-rider zones within the communities of Victoria, Duncan, , Campbell River, Courtenay/Comox, and . We were also fortunate to receive a $2000 donation to the Program from the Evening Optimist Club of Victoria for the second year in a row. This donation was featured in Island Health’s “The Weekly” publication in May of 2015. Additionally, the Central and North Island (Cl/NI) Program was honoured to receive a $500 donation from the Nanaimo Daybreak Rotary Club. The Nanaimo Daybreak Rotary Club has been a consistent supporter of the Cl/NI Program since 2008, through both funding and extensive volunteer support.

One of our NRGHvolunteers, Amanda Lutes, was featured in the September 2014 edition of “Currents” magazine. Amanda has volunteered over 60 hours with the P.A.R.T.Y.Program since joining the P.A.R.T.Y.team in September 2013. Additionally, the NRGH Program partnered with ICBCto offer a distracted driving course to th, students attending the March 4 2015 P.A.R.T.Y.session in honour of “Distracted Driving Month”. This event was featured in the April 2015 edition of “Currents”.

Teen Fest is a one-day community exhibition for teens, aged 12-18, and their families. Our booth featured a brain injury simulation activity, information related to youth injury prevention, and a helmet draw.

The Program was not without some unpreventable challenges, which included: • The BCTeacher’s strike resulted in several P.A.R.T.Y.Program cancellations. • Changes to the delivery of Planning 10 (online model) resulted in session cancellations and lower attendance rates. • Room capacity restrictions at each hospital site presented space limitations. In the Central and North Island, the P.A.R.T.Y.Program continues to partner with University’s (VIU) Nursing Program to provide practicum placements. In the 2014-2015 year, eight VIUnursing students completed practicums with the P.A.R.T.Y.Program. The students facilitated the Trauma Station, transitioned students between the stations, and conducted research relating to NRGHProgram volunteers. In September 2014, the South Island P.A.R.T.Y. Program also welcomed students from the Nursing Program, who developed and delivered an After P.A.R.T.Y.Program to students in high schools in Victoria and on .

Key Note Speakers

Key note speakers are an integral aspect of the P.A.R.T.Y.Program. Having crash survivors who are living with permanent injuries share their personal stories with student participants highlights the vivid reality of the consequences of making poor choices. The impact on P.A.R.T.Y.Program participants is immeasurable. We are grateful for the courage and commitment of the following P.A.R.T.Y.Program key note speakers:

• Sandy Richards (Victoria General Hospital): Sandy was the passenger in a vehicle hit by a drunk driver in 1994. This crash left him with physical disabilities and a brain injury.

• Shelley Bowe (Nanaimo Regional General Hospital): Shelley was involved in a serious crash in her youth. As a result, she lives with a brain injury.
