The Minnesota Seaside Station near Port Renfrew, British Columbia: A Photo Essay Erik A. Moore and Rebecca Toov* n 1898, University of Minnesota botanist Josephine Tilden, her sixty-year-old mother, and a field guide landed their canoe on Vancouver Island at the mouth of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. This Iconcluded one journey – involving three thousand kilometres of travel westward from Minneapolis – and began another that filled a decade of Tilden’s life and that continues to echo in the present. Inspired by the unique flora and fauna of her landing place, Tilden secured a deed for four acres (1.6 hectares) along the coast at what came to be known as Botanical Beach in order to serve as the Minnesota Seaside Station (Figure 1). Born in Davenport, Iowa, and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Josephine Tilden attended the University of Minnesota and completed her undergraduate degree in botany in 1895. She continued her graduate studies there, in the field of phycological botany, and was soon ap- pointed to a faculty position (the first woman to hold such a post in the sciences) and became professor of botany in 1910. With the support of her department chair Conway MacMillan and others, Tilden’s research laboratory became the site of the Minnesota Seaside Station, a place for conducting morphological and physiological work upon the plants and animals of the west coast of North America. It was inaugurated in 1901, when some thirty people, including Tilden, MacMillan, departmental colleagues, and a researcher from Tokyo, spent the summer there.1 * Special thanks to this issue’s guest editors, Alan D.

Maps and trail highlights inside How to get there From downtown Victoria, start at the corner of Wharf Street and Pandora Avenue. Cross the Johnson Street bridge, then turn right on the paved path that connects to Harbour Road and the Galloping Goose Trail. From the BC Ferries Terminal at Swartz Bay, follow the signs to the Lochside Trail. Cyclists: after passing under the GALLOPING Landsend Road overpass, turn right at the bicycle lane, right at the GALLOPING overpass, then right onto the Trail. Foot passengers: turn left at the Landsend Road overpass, then right onto the Trail. GOOSEGOOSE ANDAND From Victoria International Airport, follow the signs to Victoria. Turn left on McTavish Road, cross the Patricia Bay Highway, then turn right onto the Lochside Trail, which follows Lochside Drive. Some of the tsunamis, including one from Alaska in 1964, are the result of distant great earthquakes. Most, however, are triggered by earthquakes at the Cascadia subduction zone, which extends along the Paci"c coast from Vancouver Island to northern California. Evidence of these tsunamis has been found in tidal marshes and low-elevation coastal lakes on western Vancouver Island. The tsunamis deposited sheets of sand and gravel now preserved in sequences of peat and mud. These sheets commonly contain marine fossils, and they thin and "ne landward, consistent with deposition by landward surges of water. They occur in low-energy settings where other possible depositional processes, such as stream #ooding and storm surges, can be ruled out. The most recent large tsunami generated by an earthquake at the Cascadia subduction zone has been dated in Washington and Japan to AD 1700. The spatial distribution of the deposits of the 1700 tsunami, together with theoretical numerical modelling, indicate wave run-ups of up to 5 m asl along the outer coast of Vancouver Island and up to 15}20 m asl at the heads of some inlets.

An Act to enable the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway Company to construct a branch line to Beecher Bay. \88th April, 1888.] 1T7HEREAS a Petition has been presented by the Esquimalt and '' Nanaimo Railway Company praying for liberty to construct a line of Railway from a point on their line between Esquimalt and Goldstream to Beecher Bay, and it is expedient to grant the prayer of the said Petition: Therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly' of the Province of British Columbia, enacts as follows:— 1. It shall be lawful for the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway Power to construct Company to lay out, construct, equip, maintain and operate a Railway jj*y y ° ee° er with single, double, or more tracks of four feet eight and one-half inches gauge, from some convenient point on the line of the said Railway, between Esquimalt and Goldstream, to another convenient point on Beecher Bay, between Pedder Bay and Otter Point. 2. Profiles of Hwlitsum People Raymond (Rocky) Wilson, 65, is an Hwlitsum Elder, has served as Chief of the Hwlitsum since 1999 and is an active commercial fisher. Chief Wilson, who has lived in Hwlitsum his entire life, is also an oral historian of his community, having learned the Hwlitsum way of life and history from his father, mother, grandmother, uncles, aunts and cousins. The narratives Chief Wilson learned go back to the time of Si'nuscustan, who was born in the late 18th century, and link continuously to the present. Chief Wilson is an informed and accurate source of information about Hwlitsum fisheries and has harvested species in a great variety of locations, including those used by his ancestors. He has orally footnoted these ancestral practices in a continuous chain back to the 19th century. Chief Rocky Wilson His father, Andrew John Wilson, was born on the Coquitlam reserve in 1899 and his mother, Rose Keziah Cook, was born on Galiano Island. Andrew Wilson was a very successful commercial fisherman. Unfortunately, when Chief Wilson was a teenager, his father began suffering from severe arthritis. Chief Wilson, as the youngest of eight children, was chosen by his mother to assist his father in fishing and hunting and his father chose to teach him the Hwlitsum way of life and history. Chief Wilson also learned about the Hwlitsum way of life, and how to harvest resources from his uncles, sisters, and his older brothers. Chief Wilson On August 16, 2014 I travelled from Vancouver to Hwlitsum (Canoe Pass) where I met Chief Raymond (Rocky) Wilson at the Wilson wharf, which is approximately 1.5 kilometers from both the Roberts Bank Super-port and the mouth of Hwlitsum (Canoe Pass).

This report highlights the work on the many integrated policing units working within Greater Victoria area communities. Common among all of the integrated policing units is a shared desire to work with communities to deliver high-quality, well-coordinated, and cost effective police services. The area Police Chiefs and Detachment Commanders, in consultation with community leaders, remain committed to the identification and implementation of further integration options in situations where improvements in service delivery and financial efficiencies are likely to be realized.
