Postelsia is also among the most valued of seaweeds collected for the health- and wild-foods industry, and it is collected commercially in Oregon and California. When collectors cut fronds leaving the meristem intact they will regrow, allowing multiple collections per season to be made from the same individuals. Commercial collection takes place in California with minimal management or regulation, despite the fact that Postelsia’s life history characteristics make it especially vulnerable to overexploitation. Though many California collectors advocate and use this cutting method and maintain that it is sustainable, there is no scientific evidence to support this claim. -

Some of the tsunamis, including one from Alaska in 1964, are the result of distant great earthquakes. Most, however, are triggered by earthquakes at the Cascadia subduction zone, which extends along the Paci"c coast from Vancouver Island to northern California. Evidence of these tsunamis has been found in tidal marshes and low-elevation coastal lakes on western Vancouver Island. The tsunamis deposited sheets of sand and gravel now preserved in sequences of peat and mud. These sheets commonly contain marine fossils, and they thin and "ne landward, consistent with deposition by landward surges of water. They occur in low-energy settings where other possible depositional processes, such as stream #ooding and storm surges, can be ruled out. The most recent large tsunami generated by an earthquake at the Cascadia subduction zone has been dated in Washington and Japan to AD 1700. The spatial distribution of the deposits of the 1700 tsunami, together with theoretical numerical modelling, indicate wave run-ups of up to 5 m asl along the outer coast of Vancouver Island and up to 15}20 m asl at the heads of some inlets. -

We identified two AFLP primers that yielded 798 variable fragments and five microsatellite markers with three to seven alleles each. We also report patterns of allelic variation for four previously identified microsatellite markers in this species and several new alleles. The City created a Point Pinos Tidepool Task Force Subcommittee on Research to develop and oversee the research project and interface with the MBSF. The Subcommittee members were appointed from numerous interested parties with differing views on potential impacts resulting from visitor use. The Subcommittee was responsible for: developing a Request for Proposals (RFP), distributing the RFP to solicit research proposals, and selecting a contractor based on proposed methods and qualifications. The Subcommittee was also responsible for approving the final and more detailed study plan submitted by the selected contractor, reviewing quarterly progress reports, and approving the final report on the project. The RFP, designed to address four primary questions concerning patterns of visitor use, activities, impacts, and past changes at Point Pinos, was circulated to the coastal and marine science communities for solicitation of proposals. Throughout the entire process of proposal review and contractor selection, including project implementation, the Subcommittee required that rigorous science be incorporated into the project plans. -

TD227.B7K46 2004 333.91’04’0971128 C2004-960175-X Executive summary This project focussed on the delineation and classification of developed aquifers within the Capital Regional District of British Columbia (CRD). The goal was to identify and map water-bearing unconsolidated and bedrock aquifers in the region, and to classify the mapped aquifers according to the methodology outlined in the B.C. Aquifer Classification System (Kreye and Wei, 1994). The project began in summer 2003 with the mapping and classification of aquifers in Sooke, and on the Saanich Peninsula. Aquifers in the remaining portion of the CRD including Victoria, Oak Bay, Esquimalt, View Royal, District of Highlands, the Western Communities, Metchosin and Port Renfrew were mapped and classified in summer 2004. The presence of unconsolidated deposits within the CRD is attributed to glacial activity within the region over the last 20,000 years. Glacial and glaciofluvial modification of the landscape has resulted in the presence of significant water bearing deposits, formed from the sands and gravels of Capilano Sediments, Quadra and Cowichan Head Formations. -
