When war broke out with the Portuguese, Muslim intellectuals in the region wrote treatises and delivered sermons in order to mobilize their community in support of the Zamorins.

    A REVIEW OF MUSLIM MARITIME TRADITION Omar Bin Yaakob*, Mohamad Pauzi Abdul Ghani, Faizul Amri Adnan Marine Technology Centre, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, 81310 UTM, Johor Bahru, Johor * Corresponding Author: [email protected] Abstract The ocean covers more than 75% of the earth surface. This vast expanse of water promises a wealth of opportunities as well as challenges. This paper describes a historical perspective of development of maritime ventures in the Islamic World from the time of the Prophet (pbuh) until the present day. The expansion of the Muslim caliphate entailed among others rapid growth in communication and transport system as well as the need for a well-organised naval fleet. The peak of Muslim naval power was during the rule of the Ottoman Empire when their warships held sway over the Mediterranean, the Red Sea and parts of the Indian Ocean. A survey of the present status of maritime military, commercial, education and R&D capacity in Muslim countries is presented and proposals put forward for improving collaboration in this field. Keywords: Muslim maritime, maritime technology, economic impact, commercial ventures 1.0 Introduction The ocean, which covers more than 75% of the earth surface, supplies various needs of the human being. Besides the ubiquitous seafood, the ocean provides sources of various kinds of minerals and ornaments. It is a means of commerce, providing more than 95% of the transportation needs of international trade. For the coastal states, it is a means of defense while for the aggressive nations; the sea is an avenue for imperial expansions. In the latter half of the twentieth century, the ocean strategic and economic importance was enhanced particularly after the discovery of oil and gas in the Gulf of Mexico.

The contribution of Garcia de Orta’s Colóquios dos Simples (Goa, 1563) to the construction of an entirely new knowledge about cloves Teresa Nobre de Carvalho1 University of Lisbon Abstract: Cloves have been prized since Ancient times for their agreeable smell and ther- apeutic properties. With the publication of Colóquios dos Simples e Drogas he Cousas Mediçinais da Índia (Goa, 1563), Garcia de Orta (c. 1500-1568) presented the first modern monographic study of cloves. In this analysis I wish to clarify what kind of information about Asian natural resources (cloves in particular) circulated in Europe, from Antiquity until the sixteenth century, and how the Portuguese medical treatises, led to the emer- gence of an innovative botanical discourse about tropical plants in Early Modern Europe. Com a publicação dos Colóquios dos Simples e Drogas, e Cousas Mediçinais da Índia (Goa, 1563), Garcia de Orta (1500-1568) apresentou o primeiro estudo monográfico moderno sobre tal especiaria. Nesta análise, gostaria de esclarecer que tipo de informação sobre os recursos naturais asiáticos (especiarias em particular) circulou na Eu- ropa, da Antiguidade até o século xvi, e como os tratados médicos portugueses levaram ao surgimento de um inovador discurso botânico sobre plantas tropicais na Europa moderna.

He started working as a sailor at an early age under his uncle Kemal Reis’ tutelage, a famous commander of the Ottoman navy, in the 16th century. 2 TS02K-Surveying History 1 5/29/2012 After the death of Kemal Reis in 1510, Piri Reis returned to Gallipoli and dedicated much of his time on his world map and his book, Kitab-ı Bahriye (Book of Navigation). In 1517, Piri Reis participated in the Ottoman’s campaign to Egypt as one of the Ottoman navy admirals and presented his world map dated 1513 to Sultan Selim the Conqueror. Many members of this community shared a history of migration into Gujarat from the southern Arabian Peninsula, north Africa, Iran, Central Asia and the neighboring territories of the Indian subcontinent. I analyze two key aspects related to the making of a community of ii learned Muslim men in the fifteenth century - the production of a variety of texts in Persian and Arabic by learned Muslims and the construction of tomb shrines sponsored by the sultans of Gujarat.

Thesis Adviser: Felicitas Opwis, Ph.D. ABSTRACT A Thousand and One Wives: Investigating the Intellectual History of the Exegesis of Verse 4:24 traces the intellectual legacy of the exegesis of Qur’an 4:24, which is used as the proof text for the permissibility of mut’a (temporary marriage). I ask if the use of verse 4.24 for the permissibility of mut’a marriage is justified within the rules and regulations of Qur’anic hermeneutics. I examine twenty Qur’an commentaries, the chronological span of which extends from the first extant commentary to the present day in three major Islamicate languages. I conclude that doctrinal self-identity, rather than strictly philological analyses, shaped the interpretation of this verse. As Western academia’s first comprehensive work concerning the intellectual history of mut’a marriage and sexual ethics, my work illustrates the power of sectarian influences in how scholars have interpreted verse 4:24. My dissertation is the only work in English that includes a plurality of voices from minor schools (Ibadi, Ashari, Zaidi, and Ismaili) largely neglected by Western scholars, alongside major schools, and draws from all available sub-genres of exegesis.
