A.D. 965–1041) in his Completion of the Conics. The Arabic text of this reconstruction with English translation and commentary was published as J. P. Hogendijk, Ibn al-Haytham’s Completion of the Conics (New York: Springer-Verlag, 1985). In a new Arabic edition with French translation and commentary (R. Rashed, Les mathematiques´ infinitesimales´ du IXe au XIe siecle.´ Vol. 3., London: Al-Furqan Foundation, 2000), it was claimed that my edition is faulty. In this paper the similarities and differences between the two editions, translations, and commentaries are discussed, with due consideration for readers who do not know Arabic. This subject has a multitude of refinements which, although valuable to a professional navigator, tend to obscure the basic principles. I describe these principles, give an analytical solution of the classical two-star-sight problem without any dependence on prior knowledge of position, and include several examples. Rashed 2007], as is well known, deals with three powers only: census (to adopt the translation which will fit our coming discussion of abbacus algebra), roots, and simple numbers. So do ibn Turk [ed., trans. Say_l_ 1962] and Thabit ibn Qurrah [ed., trans. Luckey 1941] in their presentation of proofs for the basic mixed cases, which indeed involve only these same powers. -

Hospitals in the Ottoman Period and the Work Of Sinan the Architect: Suleymaniye Complex Dar Al-Shifa and the Medical Madrasa Asst. Prof. Dr. Gülhan Benli Istanbul Medipol University Faculty of Fine Arts, Design and Architecture [email protected] Abstract: The hospitals, dar al-shifas, one of the leading welfare associations in the Turkish-Islamic foundation culture, which required an architectural understanding of the application of medical profession, had a great impact on the formation of the cities. These establishments, which had an important place in Islamic world even before the Ottoman period, were able to preserve and maintain their entities such as mosques, prayer rooms, lodges, madrasas and baths with the help of their foundations. In time, the establishments, which were only treating patients in their earlier days, evolved into research and academic units where medical science was taught. Particularly, the dar al-shifas introduced by the Seljuks have a great importance in the history of Turkish medicine. During the studies with regard to the history of medicine, important data was collected about Gevher Nesibe Hospital and Medical Academy (1205-1206), built in Kayseri on behalf of the Seljuk Emperor Kilicaslan II’s daughter Gevher Nesibe Sultan, and Sivas Hospital, built by the Anatolian Seljuk Emperor Izzeddin Keykâvus (1217 – 1218). The Ottoman period health care organizations, which include special architectural resolutions aimed at the application of medical profession, are similar to the Seljuk health care organizations in style. Within the scope of this study, among the Ottoman period hospitals with a general plan scheme of rooms aligned around a central open atrium, the Medical Madrasa and Dar al-shifa structures, which are parts of the Suleymaniye Complex built by Sinan the architect, will be examined. -

Despite the nature of the understanding and conceptualization of the 25 world by the people of that time, ground-breaking ideas and descriptions of hydrological and hydrogeological 26 perceptions such as components of hydrological cycle, groundwater quality and even driving factors for 27 groundwater flow were presented in the book. Although some of these ideas may have been presented elsewhere, 28 to the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a whole book was focused on different aspects of hydrology 29 and hydrogeology. More importantly, we are impressed that the book is composed in a way that covered all aspects 30 that are related to an engineering project including technical and construction issues, guidelines for maintenance, 31 and final delivery of the project when the development and construction was over. -
