The Beatus Maps: Manchester #207.20 The Manchester (a.k.a. Rylands) Beatus mappa mundi, ca. 1175, John Rylands Library, MS. Lat. 8, fols. 43v-44r, Manchester, England, 45.4 x 32.6 cm The Manchester Beatus. The manuscript of Beatus’ Commentary of the Apocalypse of St. John now in Manchester, England was made around the year 1175 and it is ascribed to the Spanish Burgos region, specifically to the monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña and to the region of Toledo. As a reference, this map falls into Peter Klein’s “Fourth Recension” and Wilhelm Neuss’ Family IIb stemma which consists of the following maps: • Manuscript of Tabara (970). Although its mappa mundi has not survived, as we said in reference to the manuscripts of the Commentary on the Apocalypse which contain the mappa mundi, it must have been very similar to the maps of Las Huelgas and Girona. • Mappa mundi of Girona. Gonzalo Menendez-Pidal recognized the following as being inherent traits of these maps: the inclusion of Cappadocia and Mesopotamia, as well as the addition of the names of Gallia Belgica and Gallia Lugdunensis (instead of just the basic Gallias as shown in the maps of Family IIa). -

Nadwa | Jurnal Pendidikan Islam Vol. 8, Nomor 1, April 2014 Madrasah: dari Niz}a>miyyah hingga Pesisiran Jawa Mahfud Junaedi Institut Agama Islam Negeri Walisongo Semarang Email: [email protected] Abstract Growth and development in the Coastal Java madrasah in the early twentieth cen- tury until now generally spearheaded by scholars/religious leaders who graduated in Islamic centers in the Middle East. At first they established the boarding school, followed by the establishment of madrasah to the coast of Java can be regarded as children of a boarding school. The educational institutions have bonding formation of madrasah was first built by Niz{am al-Mulk in Baghdad in 1057, later known as madrasah Niz{amiyah. This school is an educational institution that aims to teach Fiqh Sunni schools. Institutions of higher education has become one of the eleventh century and became the blueprint for the development of similar madrasah in the Islamic world. Historically, madrasah in Java can not be separated from the Middle East, especially the relationship Haramayn scholars of al-Azhar and Cairo with the students in Java, Indonesia. The Beatus Maps: Turin #207.15
The Beatus Maps: Turin #207.15 The Turin Beatus. The famous Turin Beatus mappa mundi of the 12th century, measuring 39 x 27.5 cm (15.4 x 10.8 in), was produced in Catalonia, Spain, perhaps Ripoll or Girona. It was once supposed to be a medieval design of the first importance, and was thought by the historian Konrad Miller to be a derivative of the Beatus Girona map of ca. 975. In the text of the accompanying Beatus’ The Commentary of the Apocalypse of St. John Commentary illustrated by this map emphasis is laid on the dispersion of the twelve apostles though surprisingly this is not displayed on the Turin mappa mundi itself (like the El Burgo de Osma ca, 1086, #207.14, and the 12th century Milan, a.k.a. Mapa de Oña, #207.26 mappae mundi that display the apostles and their evangelical distribution). It is not now thought to be so ancient or so important as once supposed; but since it has been before the modern world for almost two centuries, far longer than any other Beatus mappa mundi, it has therefore become a classic in medieval cartography. Its remarkable peculiarities have naturally made the Turin map a favorite subject of reproduction. Although the celebrated wind-blowers, so prominent here, are also to be found in other medieval mappae mundi, their execution on this Beatus derivative are far more vigorous and detailed; each wind-spirit being seated on a sack or Aeolus-bag out of which they are squeezing a lively ‘blast of air’. It is fairly certain that in this shape the picture is not a feature of the prototype work of 776 A.D.; the simpler form of the wind-blowers in the 13th century Beatus Navarre/Paris III (#207.13) mappa mundi has a greater claim in this respect. -

e-Perimetron , Vol. 2, No. 4, Autumn 2007 [273-280] www.e-perimetron.org | ISSN 1790-3769 Geoff Wade ∗ The “Liu/Menzies” World Map: A Critique Keywords: Chinese cartography; fake maps; 1421 ; Gavin Menzies; Liu Gang; dual hemisphere maps Summary A Chinese world map purportedly drawn in 1763, and allegedly based on an earlier version of 1418, was brought to public notice in early 2006 by Mr Gavin Menzies, author of 1421: the Year China Discovered the World , and Mr Liu Gang, the map’s owner. This map has been used to sug- gest that Chinese navigators circumnavigated and mapped the world in the early 15th century and that dual hemisphere maps were first created in China. The present article provides a context for the sudden appearance of this map, and its apparent evidence for Ming Chinese circumnavigation of the globe. Through a detailed examination of the cartographic elements on the “1763” map and its alleged 1418 precursor, the many anachronisms and other errors are set down. By demonstrat- ing and enumerating the numerous impossibilities reflected in the representations of both China and the rest of the globe, it is concluded that the map is a modern fake. Introduction It was in late 2005 that Mr. Gavin Menzies, author of 1421: the Year China Discovered the World (or 1421: the Year China Discovered America in the U.S. version) began hinting that “further evidence” in support of his thesis had become available through a map, newly-discovered in China. In his inter- view with the Shenzhen Economic Daily of 19 November 2006, he showed the interviewing journal- ist a copy of a Chinese map of the world which he claimed had been drawn in 1418. -

International Journal of Jaina Studies (Online) Vol. 14, No. 2 (2018) 1-49 WATER CLOCK AND STEELYARD IN THE JYOTIṢKARAṆḌAKA Sreeramula Rajeswara Sarma for Professor Nalini Balbir in friendship and admiration 0 Introduction Mahāvīrācārya, the great Jain mathematician who flourished in Karnataka in the ninth century, at the beginning of his mathematical work Gaṇitasārasaṃgraha, pays homage to Jina Mahāvīra who illuminated the entire universe with saṃkhyā-jñāna, the science of numbers. 1 Indeed, saṃkhyā-jñāna plays an important role in Jainism which seeks to comprehend the entire universe in numerical terms. In this process, the Jains conceived of immensely large numbers, making a very fine and subtle classification of transfinite numbers and operating with laws of integral and fractional indices and some kind of proto-logarithms.2 Kāla-jñāna or kāla-vibhāga is an important part of the saṃkhyā-jñāna, for time too needs to be comprehended in numbers. Jains measured time from the microscopic samaya, which cannot be sub-divided any further,3 to the macroscopic śīrṣa-prahelikā, a number indicating years which is said to occupy 194 or even 250 places in decimal notation.4 But for vyāvahārika or practical purposes, especially for the calendar, the early Jain literature makes use of a five-year cycle or yuga. The basic problem in astronomical time- measurement is that the apparent movements of the two great luminaries who determine the passage of time, namely the Sun and the Moon, do not synchronize. The lunar year falls short of about eleven days in comparison to the solar year and does not keep step with the passage of seasons. -

Genre and Empire: Historical Romance and Sixteenth-Century Chinese Cultural Fantasies Abstract Chinese historical romance blossomed and matured in the sixteenth century when the Ming empire was increasingly vulnerable at its borders and its people increasingly curious about exotic cultures. The project analyzes three types of historical romances, i.e., military romances Romance of Northern Song and Romance of the Yang Family Generals on northern Song's campaigns with the Khitans, magic-travel romance Journey to the West about Tang monk Xuanzang's pilgrimage to India, and a hybrid romance Eunuch Sanbao's Voyages on the Indian Ocean relating to Zheng He's maritime journeys and Japanese piracy. The project focuses on the trope of exogamous desire of foreign princesses and undomestic women to marry Chinese and social elite men, and the trope of cannibalism to discuss how the expansionist and fluid imagined community created by the fiction shared between the narrator and the reader convey sentiments of proto-nationalism, imperialism, and pleasure. -

An Abstract of Prester John: A Reexamination and Compendium of the Mythical Figure Who Helped Spark European Expansion by Michael E. Brooks Submitted as partial fulfillment of the requirements for The Doctor of Philosophy degree in History The University of Toledo December 2009 This work reinterprets the evolution and pervasiveness of the Prester John myth, following the legend from its geographical and historical roots in central and eastern Asia to its final setting in Abyssinia. However, unlike most works on the subject, which typically begin with the twelfth-century writings of Otto of Freising, the author of this dissertation argues that a more complete understanding of the legendary priest-king requires an analysis of the literary traditions that created the ideal environment for the naissance of the Prester John saga. In addition, the influence that the Prester John legend exerted on the mindset of late medieval and early modern Europeans has been understated by many historians; this is in part due to the effects of periodization, whereby modern writers expect historical figures such as the Infante Dom Henrique, Christopher Columbus, and Duarte Lopes to behave in a modern - rather than late medieval - fashion. -
